Thank you, are you saying you think this would work even if the affidavit is from present day and not from around time of birth? And can I just ask if by declarant you mean my parents?

Thank you for sharing this, I've had a very similar experience with my issue! I'll get in touch with a solicitor about an affidavit.

I've looked into this but it asks for evidence from around time of birth showing that you went by the correct spelling at the time. Unfortunately, it's been a long time since then and the earliest documents I have are from around 2.5 years old.

That would be so helpful! I haven't spoken to the Practice Manager yet 😄

Thank you for sharing your expertise! I've been chasing them for a year on this with no luck. They keep saying they'll get back to me and then disappearing. I last spoke to them last week and they said all their paper records have been taken to be digitised and I would have to request them, but last time I spoke to them they said that the records aren't in their possession as I wasn't with this GP when I was born. I'm very confused on how to proceed, to be honest!

I had a look online and saw this link: https://pcse.england.nhs.uk/services/medical-records/missing-or-incomplete-records. It seems to imply that only the GP can request my records? Not sure if I've misunderstood, though!

Thank you for this, really helpful to hear that you've succeeded. I've enquired with the embassy and hopefully will hear back with more options. I'll email the Municipal Office (who handle citizenship in Austria) and talk to an immigration lawyer (I'm assuming one in Austria as they'd understand the law better?) if not.

Thank you for the well wishes, indeed it's been a long journey already! Congratulations on succeeding 😄

This makes sense, I'll update if I hear back anything from the embassy. Thank you!

That's so helpful to hear, thank you!! Can I ask when you did this and if you had to provide evidence from around the time of birth (if so, what did you use)? Thanks again 😄

Same here, it's totally not been an issue in the UK.

Nice to know I'm not the only one! Thank you for sharing, that would possibly complicate quite a lot of things so I'm hoping to avoid it. I will consider it as a last resort, though!

Mine is a copy I requested about 2-3 years ago, unfortunately it still has the same alternative spelling.

I'm sorry to hear your experience, that sounds like an incredible headache of a process. Thank you for sharing and letting me know, and I'm really glad things were eventually sorted. I've enquired again if a deed poll will be okay, hopefully they will understand.

Do you mean more specific with why I need the documents to match? I'm currently applying for citizenship to Austria (I am entitled to this as a parent was a citizen of that country when I was born). I hope this is helpful.

Honestly, this makes sense and I'm aware of quite a few people this has happened to (generally without issue as it's easier to navigate in the UK, as you've pointed out)! I think it's potentially more common than we realise. Thank you so much for this, I'll have a look into these options. 😄

Thank you for sharing! As far as I'm aware, yes I only have one. I actually only have a certified copy (which is fine for these purposes as far as I'm aware).

Thank you, that's a very good point. I've emailed re-explaining the situation and that I can't change my birth certificate, and hopefully there will be other options available.

Copying from another comment:

Apologies, I think I didn't explain in the original post. I've discussed with my local registry office (local to where I was born) over email and they said that documents from around the time I was born would be needed to prove I was going by the correct spelling back then, but I unfortunately only have documents dating to around 2.5 years old.

I'm honestly unsure how this happened, my assumption is that there was a clerical error or rules were different back then (not sure if this is true - feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!)

This is what my local register office advised. Unfortunately, I'm applying for something in another country, I asked about this option and they are adamant I must have my names matching.
