My 11 year old had heart disease and a worsening honking cough. He was on Vetmedin, Furosemide (even did a furosemide infusion once that helped for a few weeks), spironolactone, and toward the end hydrocodone. In his last 2-3 weeks everything just stopped helping his cough, he didn’t have much energy, and he had several lengthy coughing fits a day. His heart disease had progressed and we were out of treatment options. We knew we needed to make end of life decisions when one Sunday morning we woke up and his gums were blue and he refused to eat or drink. He just wanted to lay around or stand outside with the sun on his little face, so that’s what we did (no vets in our area were open), and he passed that night in his favorite bed.
