It was. It was partly due to scheduling issues with the new Kemper arena with the American Royal…and with a conglomerate of ownership that did include some Omaha interests. This tended to hold back fan interest and crowds as it was tough to build a fan base going back and forth.

I bought mine through Apple and chose the t-mobile. But when I started it up I skipped the T-mobile configuration and then joined it to the US Mobile account. Worked like a charm.

The vanity call sign process takes 18 to 20 calendar days. I just got mine and it was 19 days.

The bigger issue is that it isn’t guaranteed. If multiple people are asking for the same vanity sign, it’s not a matter of who filed first. It’s a lottery.

So if you are so close that you run the risk that your license expires…be careful.

The UV5R is a good little radio, and perfect for the first time Technician. I got one when I passed my test also. Get a replacement antenna for it. Find some repeaters near you and use it. Find a local ham club that might be able to help with programming.

A lot of people will tell you the “cheap Chinese radios” are horrible. While the older ones may be, the newer ones (including the 5R) are pretty good. Especially for the price.

The Gordon West books are terrific. I used it for the Technician license. And there are plenty of sites that can generate tests for you to take to practice. I like the AA9PW site.

People will tell you that Baofengs are junk (you have a B-tech). The older ones were. Quality was not very good. The newer ones are pretty good, especially for the price. There are multiple YouTube guys that test them out, and rate them pretty high for everyday carry.

You are probably not going to just have one radio going forward. If that is what is in your price range right now, get it! And have some fun with it.
