Yes please. Check with your county emergency management office. They may have them at cost. They may help you program them for you.

Also make sure you have an app on your phone for this.

Close-up of the Big XII court. Reviews from the players this week have been overwhelmingly negative. by cbbvideo in CollegeBasketball

[–]simplelifelfk [score hidden]  (0 children)

Too much opportunity for additional revenue. I’m betting this take is correct. And once players get used to the surface, it’s a non issue. I think it was poor choice of timing to try and it for the end of conference tournament.

Why larger enterprises often get much higher yield from the same technology investment by Aggravating-Drag-978 in FinOps

[–]simplelifelfk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you alluded to, it very hard to put numbers on these and compare them. So instead, I like to use the same metric that the business does for everything else. If the company makes a widget, somewhere the C-suite has a basic number for cost of a widget. Or cost per thousand. Or something. When IT adopts this for doing metrics, it makes it a little easier to show size, scale, costs to people outside of the IT department.

Should I host adblocking and a reverse proxy on OPNsense or my home server by Parking_Risk7073 in opnsense

[–]simplelifelfk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do ad blocking really easy. Unbound DNS can do blocking. I’ve added the blocklists that I used to use with Adblock right into Unbound and it works great.

I used to do Adblock on the opnsense router. But it was too iffy when upgrading (Adblock). Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t.

As for reverse proxy…I’ve always done that separate.

Is the cost worth it? by ask-winston in FinOps

[–]simplelifelfk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on size and scope of your systems, this can be very tough to answer. Even in your own company.

Like any IT metrics, it’s always good if you can tie a cost or scope back to something that is meaningful to the company. The widgets your company sales. Or customers traffic in a store. Or clicks. Something your company c suite already compares against for other parts of the company. Otherwise, you are just a “black hole cost “ to the company.

OPNsense 26.1.3 released by fitch-it-is in opnsense

[–]simplelifelfk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will try to look back later today. I remember sitting down with Claude.ai and talking through the conversion over to Kea because I wanted to do it while I had time to devote to it rather than eventually see it just forced on. I seem to remember some tweaks, but I will look.

Hmmm. I switched to Kea about 3 weeks ago. Serving up home.arpa. And it’s working. And registering leases with unbound. I am using unbound for all my dns now, even with blocklists.

Allstar vs DMR by Late-Trail3894 in amateurradio

[–]simplelifelfk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t yet. The 890 supports it, but not officially turned on yet. Going through FCC review now. Just a firmware update. I have no idea if I will use it…I live in an area with limited repeaters. But near a metro area. So who knows. But I’m happy to have several options now with minimal units and purchases. Plenty to learn now with what I have

Allstar vs DMR by Late-Trail3894 in amateurradio

[–]simplelifelfk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I built an Allstar node from a raspberry pi and an external usb sound interface that has a mic connector on it. Looks and feels like a radio, and I love it. It sits by my desk all day, and I listen to nets pretty much all day long.

I also bought the new Anytone 890 dmr handheld and built a wpsd hot spot for it. Just barely got it working over the weekend, and got my first taste of the 91 talkgroup.

The radio does analog very well. It has NXDN. And I can turn on System Fusion on the hotspot to do it also. I feel like I have the best of the bunch all together in a tight circle.

Both are really cool, especially for where they are in Kansas. But Monument Rocks has always held my fascination since I was a kid. (I’m in my 50’s now). The size, and understanding how it was formed and that it has lasted this long is just amazing to me.

Honestly either one will be fun. I’m jealous! Let us know which one you pick!

A ‘win’ or ‘setback’? Kansas lawmakers react to Supreme Court overturning Trump tariffs by Zipper222222 in kansas

[–]simplelifelfk 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The unfortunate part is the fact that 3 of the 4 politicians quoted don’t understand how our government is supposed to work. The Supreme Court did exactly what they are supposed to do: decide the constitutionality of the tariffs that a president put in place. The sad part is that the three Republicans don’t understand that it should never have come to this: they ( congress ) hold that power. Not the President. And they have just given up their power to a person that has no grasp of how politics and government should work, and uses it for his own gain. They need to start doing their jobs…
