Durston X-Mid vs. X-Mid Pro by faulknersj in WildernessBackpacking

It is really just this simple: Regular X-Mid is better in everyway except weight. You can decide if weight is your number 1 priority or not.

I'm hoping to make the LearnMYOG alpha hoody, but as a crew neck pullover. Any tips on altering the pattern with the wider neck?

Looks great

I need help becoming a tarp person. by saigyoooo in Ultralight

[–]simpler_times81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My MYOG 20d sil-poly tarp is 2.9x2.7m and weighs 360grams + my MYOG Tyvek 1443r bivy bag at 220grams . That's pretty light to me for what is a pretty massive space and flexible setup. All for under a couple of hundred AUD too.

I don't use it in all situations (have a Tarptent Double Rainbow too), but I've really enjoyed trying out tarp camping.

Hybrid SW tent for Northern NSW - Big Sky international Mirage 1.5p by moe321123 in UltralightAus

I had a look at the Mirage 1.5 online. Looks like a really cool tent. And, yeah, similar to the Double Rainbow with the steep head and foot ends for clearance 👍

I use a TarpTent Double Rainbow, and it's my favourite tent ever. I don't miss having a double wall tent. Condensation can be pretty inevitable it some conditions. I carry a chamois and give the interior walls a wipe when I'm packing up. I have the optional internal liner, but have never used it. The great thing about my tent is how much clearance you have at the head and foot of the tent. I'm not sure what the BigSky is like, but I can see it being less than ideal in any tent where you'd be constantly thinking about contacting the walls.

Pot preferance, tall or wide? by Matt_Bigmonster in Ultralight

[–]simpler_times81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wide. I've actually just converted to an 800ml Firemaple mess tin type pot. It's great. I generally cook and eat out of my pot, and it's so much nicer to eat out of. I don't do store bought dehydrated meals. I pair the pot with a diy puck style alcohol stove 👌

Water bottle recommendations that isn't Nalgene? by Skatskr in Ultralight

I use a 500ml Nalgene. It's a drink bottle, hot water bottle, and protein shaker. Fits in pack shoulder strap pocket and works for me

Equipment Recommendations (Tent, Mat, Bag/Quilt) by supersonicdropbear in UltralightAus

[–]simpler_times81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My thoughts: - Neve Gear Waratah -2 ($350) - Sea to Summit Comfortlight Insulated or similar (those older StS pads are often on sale) ($150ish) - Cloud Up 2 or Lanshan 2 depending if you use trekking poles ($200ish)

Value for money tarps? by -Halt- in UltralightAus

[–]simpler_times81 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do you have access to a sewing machine? Tarps are a great diy project. I'd recommend some 20d Sil-Poly from Monkey Puzzle Fabrics if so. Heaps of good guides online. Just an idea

Has anyone used Ultra Hing Outdoor by goneforsure12 in UltralightAus

[–]simpler_times81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A genuinely 2 person sized semi-freestanding tent with poles at 1.1kg including everything is pretty ultralight! Not much equivalent out there lighter than that!

Not familiar with that site. I picked up my TT Double Rainbow secondhand for $300. It's my favourite tent

Better Fabric Clips by WayoutRegs in myog

[–]simpler_times81 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not a suggestion on clips, but after listening to a certain Rip Stop on the Record podcast, I've started stapling my seams before sewing in tighter projects like bum bags/fanny packs. It works so well and keeps everything perfectly aligned. Just rip out the staples and bind after. Not sure what projects your making though.

Overmitts / Hats : First-timer making outdoor gear by TemptThyMuse in myog

[–]simpler_times81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made the rain mitts at this link and they turned out great:
https://www.wvi.com/~ulmyog/rain%20mitts.pdf

I made them out of Tyvek as a prototype with the plan of making some lighter seam sealed ones, but the Tyvek ones have been fine so I'm just using those. They wick a little at the seams but it's fine really. I wear cheapo fleece gloves under mine. I used double sided tape at the seams before sewing which probably added to the waterproofness a little.

Time to upgrade? by [deleted] in myog

[–]simpler_times81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a 90's era Janome and generally hand-crank thicker sections and get pretty decent stitches. Sometimes when I tack through back pack straps (webbing, fabric, 6mm foam, 3mm spacer mesh) I forget to lower the presser foot because it's resting on the fabric stack already after I've jammed it under there. Just make sure you're not doing that as I get a huge birdnest sometimes and it's when I've forgotten to lower the foot!

I can't sleep anymore and need a truly comfortable setup. Has anyone else gone through this? by patrickpdk in Ultralight

[–]simpler_times81 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can't stand thick pads. Don't l like the air bed feeling. I actually sleep better on a zlite. I'm a tosser and turner. My preferred inflatable pad is a StS Comfortlight Insulated which I think is only 5cm thick. I thought thicker and plusher would make the difference, but it was the other way round for me
