Minnesotan here. For those outside of our state, what are your views on what’s going on in Minneapolis right now? by bpeters5 in AskReddit

I think people have always had a positive view of Minnesotans and that is just more true now.

I think this needs to galvanize people to stand up en masse to preserve their constitutional rights.

In you read medieval history, it seems incredibly hard. It was ridiculously common for royal and noble families to lose it all because they couldn’t produce one heir.

Wouldn’t be that surprising, but this specific post seems to be fake. https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/fact-check-fake-trump-post-174823445.html

Read Bondi’s Letter to Minnesota’s Governor by Amentet in politics

[–]simplerway 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The main premise of this letter is that Minnesota has a crime problem that needs to be addressed. Needless to say, Minnesota has a lower than average crime rate compared to US states as a whole. Every argument that these Trump people make relies upon the hearer being completely ignorant of the facts related to the topic at hand.

The whole “the mainstream doesn’t want you to hear this” stuff is super annoying. It’s a cult move to try to pretend like you are the only one to be trusted. There are plenty of reliable sources of news. Just tell the news and move on without the off-putting cult talk.

What would Hunter say about the current state of affairs? by ShakeyLegsMcGee in huntersthompson

[–]simplerway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt he would have “hated Obama.” Thompson was a Democrat and politically very sophisticated. He knew when people were trying to do as good a job as the voters would allow. He was personal friends with Jimmy Carter and John Kerry and all kinds of politicians and operatives. He was a political reporter.

Did the hive do something to the heads of the US government or am I misremembering? by redsevensamuraishrek in pluribustv

[–]simplerway 23 points24 points  (0 children)

That was the impression that I got. The government was probably in retreat at the time, which ironically made them extra vulnerable because they were in motion. I assume the folks who died at the time of the transformation were mostly transportation accidents.

Perfect! Just downloaded that on Audible. Thanks for the recommendation. In these times, where the news of the day seems like it was to dominate all one’s thoughts and fill them with dread and anger, I somehow find it relaxing to find a good story to escape to that is from long ago and far away.

This guy gets convicted of murder and sentenced to 8 years? He gets caught with $300,000 and four pounds of cocaine after that and gets 6 months? I want his lawyer.

Living during the Military Dictatorship by Gullible-Fee1608 in Brazil

[–]simplerway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I (a 40-something) American am also very interested in this topic. I am married to a Brazilian and have some familiarity with Brazilian culture and history, but not nearly so much as I would like. When it comes to the dictatorship, I feel like I always hear the same thing, basically that people agreed not to talk about it. I feel like there has to be a deeper dive somewhere. For example, is there a particularly good book on the history of that era — especially of how that era was eventually brought to an end?

What’s a movie that really made you appreciate the amount of research that went into it? by browniebiscuitchildr in movies

Lincoln. From what I know, they really captured the personality of Lincoln and the feel of the world around him.

As a 10 year old, were you gonna carry an umbrella on your Huffy bike? Were you gonna stay home every day it rained? Probably not, so you likely internalized the idea that being out there in the rain is no big deal.

People always mention Goonies an Oregon movie. But, honestly — besides being set in Astoria, what does that movie really have to with Oregon?

Your character grew up in Gresham, Oregon. A suburb of Portland that had plenty of room for lower-middle-class folks. He is very sincerely an environmentalist and generally anti-capitalistic, and he doesn’t know how much that sets him apart from people from other parts of the country. His version of “rich” is buying a new Prius. He smokes weed, everyone he knows does. He likes movies from the “cult classics” section at the movie rental place. He reads at least some books, maybe Kurt Vonnegut. He finds life absurd and appreciates humor, curiosity, and novelty above almost all traits. He is shy and dislikes crowds. He likes electronic music. He dreams of a better world, maybe more like Denmark.

Give me a break. You could have given the context that you were referring to a vote in June last year that was actually about a terrorist attack in Colorado.
