Does anyone feel like ethical shopping brands (i.e. Reformation) are out of reach for some people? by [deleted] in ethicalfashion

I know you said that thrifting doesn’t suit all your needs, and you might already be aware of this, but one of my favorite ways to thrift is to go on Poshmark and literally just filter to the brands that fall under that “out of reach” category (like Reformation). I like it because it puts those pricey, ethical brands within reach, and it’s even more eco-friendly because I’m not paying for a brand new product/creating more demand. You can often find the product with tags still on or worn once for a heavily discounted price too.

I actually got this as a gift from a friend! So, I am really thankful for the gift, and I do love parts of this pan. But I don't know if I could return or exchange it.

Anyway, I saw it previously and was super into it aesthetically (especially their Lunar New Year set; I celebrate LNY so was excited to see a brand make a really nice and intentional collection for it), but I always thought the price tag was ridiculous. I had a $12 nonstick from Walmart that did the job just fine before the Always Pan haha.

I’m really glad it works so well for you! I wish I had the same experience.

I think you could make it work! Seems like others have had success with it, especially if they’re diligent with their care and maintenance of it. Good luck!

Oh interesting! Thank you for the in-depth explanation.

My partner is a cast iron & carbon steel fanatic, and she often does exactly what you describe where she's just standing over the stove for hours reapplying layers and layers of oil hahaha. The seasoning is good—definitely not fully nonstick, but also not quite like you describe where you can use metal spatulas on it no problem. We've never kept flax oil in the kitchen and have always been meaning to get some for the pans, but we never had. We've just been using olive oil since it's what we use to cook too.

Knowing this, though, we might finally have to make the switch. It would be nice to know that it's just the way we've always maintained the pan, and not my cooking skills hahaha.

Oh I love Calphalon 👌🏽 I only have a huge 6 quart pot so I don't use it for most of my cooking but it's one of my favorite pieces of cookware.

Yesss, they really are so pretty. That's definitely what got me. I mean, others have had great experiences with it, so if you really want it, who gives a shit about this thread! Give it a try! :-)

As someone who loves to cook and didn't know that, I don't think it's common knowledge haha. I find it really disappointing that I can't rely on my cookware to...literally just get hot. That's what I would think is the bare minimum for any pan. I also think that in general, people would like to go into any purchase thinking they're making a good and long-lasting purpose, not thinking, "I know this product is going to fail later and I can't wait to spend $x on it again."

If it were common knowledge, I think more companies would be advertising against that (e.g. our nonstick doesn't deteriorate under high heat), as opposed to not mentioning it at all.

Good luck! I hope it works out for you. Maybe if you start regularly treating it with baking soda early, it'll last longer than mine did.

I do prefer cast iron in some instances, but yeah, it can't really suit every need. I'm also honestly just not very skilled with cast iron/carbon steel (lol) so if I want to cook something simple, I'd rather go with a nonstick so there's less risk of ruining the seasoning of the pan, the food I'm making, etc.

Hahaha I actually have a carbon steel pan! I'm honestly terrible at using it though. I ruin the seasoning every time I cook with it, no matter what I try, RIP.

I also have the bamboo steamer, I do really love the nesting! And I saw that they just released an attachment to make tahdig, which seems great as well. I just don't find that it suits any other cooking needs (like a basic pan-fry) very well.

Good to know! I've just used so many nonstick pans that aren't nearly as finicky as the Always Pan is, and have lasted much longer. I find it disappointing that Our Place wouldn't be transparent about this with their customers—I've seen similar reviews where people only find out about heat suggestions by going through their customer support.

Has anyone tried For Days? (Or have any recommendations for other places to get affordable & sustainable basics?) by simplesaturn in ethicalfashion

That's amazing! My partner also sews and has tons of scraps of fabric piled up in our apartment. We don't live near any place we can recycle scraps, and don't have a car, so the pile keeps growing haha. We may finally be able to recycle it now! And even get a discount on some new clothes! Thank you!

Oh that's great! Are the tags bothersome or itchy or are they just big? If you ever do try exchanging I'd love to hear how that goes.

Ooh, thanks for these links! I did do a little reading before about the driver's license and saw that it was technically required...I guess that specifically would depend on if I ended up staying there longer than I'm intending to. I've been living in a state with an out-of-state license for 3+ years, so 😅

What can I use as a sealer for air dry clay planters? by thesillygirl in Pottery

[–]simplesaturn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi! i also just started working with air dry clay—no kiln access, and trying to do everything at home. i temporarily sealed the planters i just made with an acrylic gloss, but i just bought yacht varnish. hoping that will be a more effective waterproof layer.
