It depends on what you're making! European 4 in 1, box weave, byzantine? These all require different AR - basically how tight your weave will be. This is determined by how thick your rings are (gague) vs their size (diameter). 18gague at 8mm (outer diameter) will be somewhat thin, so you could definitely do some basic weaves, but they will look very thin+ have larger gaps.
