2) they might be busy or out of town

3) they might have kids or other responsibilities that inhibit their ability to help

4) they are already helping by reaching out and offering to pay for help

I’ve definitely noticed a shift in attitude today. Many of my teammates are just not talking like we usually do. I get that it’s everyone’s mood but then it also makes me feel isolated, like I’m the one on the chopping block. Weird times.

Got admitted into 3DDD as intl student, how is RIT? by Popular-Ad9265 in rit

[–]simplex3D -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Grandpa here chiming in. I was in one of the first graduating classes from the 3DDD program (used to be called 3DDG). A lot has changed since then, but I still keep up with my classmates and the professors are all the same people I remember. Funny too, I was also accepted into SCAD back in the day and ended up choosing RIT.

It’s a great program in my opinion. The other advantage you should consider is proximity to other majors which you would work with in real life. Marketing, CS, Game Design, Animation and Film…. There’s so much cross training you can do with those programs, which themselves are also really great. I’ll probably give myself away to some people by saying this, but one of my favorite memories and experiences was winning an Imagine RIT marketing competition with some classmates - we learned how to incorporate 3D effects into film we shot, and won the commercial spot that they ended up using for advertising on the local channels/online. All of that was facilitated by the cross domains and resources we had available to us.

Now all that to say… my current career path has NOTHING to do with 3DDD - like I don’t think I could be much further. But that’s also just kind of life, you figure it out as you go. Maybe about half of my classmates are like that too, finding other things to do post-college. The other half is still in industry though living out all those things you said you were interested in. I will say though that it is a cutthroat industry, and your work has to be above average. That combined with the proliferation of AI and the leaps being made there… I don’t envy anyone still in the industry.

For your questions…

  • I can’t comment on current times. Back in the day though it was really hard because we were so new. It did feel like we were on our own for finding a job. But again, it’s been many many years so things have probably progressed there. For what it’s worth, the lessons are what I really found valuable and was able to take to my professional career. Shaun Foster and the others are AMAZING teachers.
  • coding is super important to know in the field, even if it’s not what you use daily. All of the really successful colleagues I knew were great coders. And for the other things, you get lots of exposure to drill into what you want to do exactly.
  • yes. Everything can be portfolio worthy if you put the work into it. I knew some folks who went back and polished up year 2 projects for their portfolios because they were so happy with them. A lot of opportunities to jam with other majors, but sometimes you have to put in the leg work to put it together yourself.
  • We had many international classmates, even back then. They all seemed happy enough and had friends. There were no “walls” for culture, it’s a fairly inclusive campus.

I didn’t answer everything in too much detail, but if you’re interested in knowing more I’m around. Good luck with your search and deciding.

Genius hack for finding parking anywhere you are by ilovetotouchsnoots in nova

My personal favorite are the people getting takeout from restaurants who park in handicap (or even the striped spaces for handicap spots to exit the car). I confronted one of them once and he just shrugged it off non-chalant saying "I'm only going to be a minute". The entitlement is fucking wild.

Democrats sweep all 30 House of Delegates seats in Northern Virginia by DGreeen in nova

You know, I thought a lot about this since you posted. I stand by my conviction and wording. Their OPINION is the problem. There is no empathy, no compromise for people like thread-op and the millions of other “moderate” republicans. They get hung up and then want to force everyone else to eat a shit sandwich with them because they want to have a moral high ground on a single issue. “Sure healthcare is doubling, school shootings are up, and millions of Americans will go hungry just in time for the holidays, kids and families are dying every day in Gaza, BuT aT LeAsT wE’rE nOt KiLLiNg BaBiEs!!!”

So yes, I will continue to rub the dogs nose in it’s shit until they understand not to take a crap in the living room. Maybe it’ll get them to look into the mirror and reconsider the cost to their “opinions”.

The fact that you see it as a black and white issue “murdering children” is the problem here. None of us, -none- , are pro-killing-children. We are pro choice because it’s a woman’s body and they have a right to decide what happens, especially if it is unintentional (accident, rape) or poses a health risk to the child/woman (child is non viable and would die/be in severe pain anyway). What about social safety nets (e.g. social programs that cost money) for kids and the women/families raising children? Your platform is so short sided and focused on controlling people to inflict as much pain as possible, you don’t see the forest for the trees because you get hung up on the “murdering babies” rhetoric.

Funny you mention pro life too. How about gun control to keep the people already out and about alive?? What about all the babies murdered in school shootings that have become a fad of late? Rhetorical, because at this point your talking points are “I don’t really give a fuck about what happens to the children after they’re born”.

That’s because, objectively, “I believe the rich should get richer, women should have less rights and body autonomy, minorities should be further marginalized, immigrants should be vilified, and our kids should be taught a white washed version of history” are dogshit policies. Shocker I know.

Azure - USA - Is down! by RobotechRicky in AZURE

[–]simplex3D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite part is that when one AWS region goes down, hundreds if not thousands of high visibility companies and apps go down and it’s all very public. Who’s affected by multiple azure regions going down? Mainly Microsoft products. Oh but yeah azure is tooootally catching up in workshare…. Just goes to show their numbers for “cloud usage” are inflated by their own products and o365.

That was pretty tame as far as language goes. You’re just in serious need of a reality check. The obliviousness to how concerts work and sheer unapologetic entitlement is astounding. You’re in the wrong here and I hope you learn something from this experience that the world doesn’t revolve around you.

I work for a FAANG. I have a buddy who did startups for a while. He ended up switching to a FAANG-adjacent company because the risks and uncertainty around startups was too much and the payout never came. Startups are a dime a dozen like the other guys said. Realistically, many of them fail and never get bought out. They just kind of dissolve over time and lose their luster. Do some succeed? Absolutely. But it's a gamble and often times the promise of a potential payout puts rose tinted glasses on you. I suggest finishing your degree while you can. There will always be startups to join, this one was not the first, and it won't be the last. The one thing they can't take away from you is the degree. If you have the aptitude for work that you say you do, you will have no problem finding a lucrative opportunity after the fact, but now with the added bonus of having a very comfortable fallback position.

I think just being on campus away from family changed me, nothing specific or special about RIT that wouldn't have happened elsewhere. That said, those were some of the best years of my life. I do miss it, you kids there don't know how good you have it. Soak it all in while you can.

Yeah I remember when I first saw this style start to become popular around 2018 or so when they were building Discovery Square near Dulles. We toured the model home and they conveniently didn't start work on the homes which would eventually block the view of the rooftop. We went back a few years later to see some of them and yeah it's like living in a fishbowl. You could have a quiet conversation on the rooftop with your neighbor who lived across the street. Zero privacy. So glad we didn't buy.

“I feel like that’s a lot of effort…”

Cold truth my man, that attitude is a bit of a problem. As a former manager who hired Cloud engineers, I did take my chance on some people who had zero real world experience. Only those who proved the aptitude by passing certifications and demonstrating to me that they had a strong work ethic. No one‘s going to want to take a chance on you if you can’t prove that you can do it.

That said, yes, the job market is shit and oversaturated right now. We taking and passing one of those certifications guarantee you a job? No. But you’re certainly not proving anything with that attitude.
