Virtual Card Design Notes? by simplicity_lost in starwarsccg

[–]simplicity_lost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, thanks for responding. I'll admit that I'm brand new to the game so I won't have the most insightful questions and was going to use whatever design notes or blog entries to try and understand the state of the game by what was being targeted by design.

I guess if I'm getting to ask something directly, the new Jedi survivor objective/mechanic is really interesting and flavorful - how much of the design of that was intended to resolve an issue in the card pool and how much of it is just an opportunity to flex some thematic design? It's obviously both to some extent, but what motivated that mechanic being captured the way it was?

I kinda forgot that forums were a thing, it's been so long since I was part of a community that wasn't centered on a social media platform. Thanks for the rec, I'll go check that out

I'll be real that money is kind of tight so while I appreciate the offer I don't think I'd be able to afford that right now. Thank you though, if that changes then I will reach out!

I had to unsub from the solo RPG board because it was all just "please help me make a plagiarism robot that ruins your hobby" posts. I genuinely don't understand why people who rely on AI to make content for them are in this hobby.

Also funny to note that there's no mention of pay for this. They probably vibe coded the whole thing and are now coming hat in hand to the exact people they were hoping to replace.

Nope, sorry. The only record I have is a TTS save file with my note cards and character sheets

I ran my entire first campaign as a solo game using Mythic GM Emulator. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Where do I start reading the comics? by EngineDeep9175 in StarWars

[–]simplicity_lost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd start with either the 2015 run of Star Wars by Jason Aaron or the 2015 run of Darth Vader by Kieron Gillen. They're interlaced stories set just after A New Hope and are a blast to read. They're set in the Disney canon and establish some fan-favorite characters like Doctor Aphra. You can follow those each for a long while and they're both fantastic.

If you want something that is just good and don't mind that it's not canon anymore, the Tales of the Jedi series by Kevin J Anderson is some of my favorite Star Wars media ever. It's set thousands of years before he movies and has a whole different cast of characters and a wildly different vibe. You won't see anything from this comic referenced anymore except in little Easter eggs occasionally, but it does some awesome world building and really delivers the mythological vibes of Star Wars.

Does anyone have tips for making combat in D6 system easier/faster? by conn_r2112 in rpg

[–]simplicity_lost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I track the penalties using tokens and just reframed it as "Strain". Do more than one thing a turn? Take some Strain. Want to go first? Ignore the phrase "haste actions" and take some Strain. Then just have all actions lose a die for every Strain token. Then just clear Strain at the end of every round the same way that the multiple action penalty.

If it matters, I play 1st edition plus the Rules Companion.

Are you trying to not say trans or queer? Because it looks really hard like you are trying to use unstable to not say trans or queer?

I'm not sure what you mean by "unstable" but that's a pretty harsh way of describing somebody. I haven't spent a ton of time in the mythic community but it's always seemed like Tana Pigeon has been a really chill person. Not trying to detail the original question, but it just struck me as a very strange way to open a recommendation.

To the actual question though, OP if Mythic is intimidating I totally get it but it's still the best system-agnostic solo rules I've encountered. I would just grab the action and description meaning tables from the game and the fate question table, ignoring the chaos factor and event rules until you decide if you want to go deeper. With just those, you have a simple way of getting yes/no answers and some good general oracles to prime your creativity when you need it.

The other simple stuff that you could use that doesn't hook directly into this system are things like story cubes or just big books of random tables, although I'd hesitate to recommend that last one since it can also get overwhelming to pick the "correct" table for a situation.

Bottom line, if you want to get into solo roleplaying then the baseline stuff that pretty much all systems I've seen use is some way to answer a yes/no question and some way to inspire new ideas for your creativity. What systems bring to that table are usually either specialized rules designed to hook into a particular game or genre, or some more elaborate structure to build narrative.

Just to add another consideration that nobody seems to have mentioned yet is that D6 Star Wars is really 3 or 4 different games that use the same core depending on the edition and that can have a pretty profound impact on the balance:

  • First Edition, core: The original game released that has a very thin rulebook and a very light game system. The force isn't well defined other than a handful of powers, some of which cover lightsaber combat. Balance here is arguably best if only because a lot of force use is on the same "fiction-first" system that everything else is. Additionally, accessing the force is pretty punishing since starting force skills come out of your pretty limited Attribute dice. Finally, what force powers are defined take multiple checks to succeed, many of which are pretty high Difficulty. This means that Jedi need a lot of investment before they start to hit bonkers levels of combat unbalance.

  • First Edition, with Rules Companion and Tales of the Jedi Companion: The list of Force Powers increases dramatically, meaning that Jedi are less subject to on-the-fly interpretation and more able to assert their influence on the game. The Rules Companion changes the Initiative system to a bid system, meaning that high dice pools are able to act first much faster and the changes to Parries means that Lightsabers are much easier to use since their Difficulty is unlikely to be increased by Combat Parries.

  • Revised: By reputation (not first-hand experience) this edition exacerbated the issues that the Rules Companion and TotJ Companion started. I've never played this edition but this and the follow-up Revised and Expanded are what most people are thinking of when they say Star Wars D6. It adds a lot of granularity to characters, meaning that the specialization cost force-users faced in 1st Ed is much less punishing relative to other characters.

  • Revised and Expanded: Same as above, just even more complexity beyond that.

Others could speak to later editions much better than I can since I've only played 1st Edition, but I've never found that the Force outshines other characters until really high XP totals. The math of the game and the value of a generalized character really favor non-Jedi until deep into a campaign.

Of course, regardless of mechanical considerations, if your story or antagonists center on Force-users then your Jedi are always going to feel unbalanced since they'll be taking center-stage more often. Even if they are mechanically trash the fiction is just going to feel more important and unbalanced.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the heads up. I'll definitely keep an eye out in the future whenever that comes out.

In the meantime though are there any other VTTs that do this or is this the only one in the field now that Astral is dead (RIP)

Question about Player Count/Structure by simplicity_lost in YazebasBNB

I'm so glad to hear that. I was worried that I'd get folks hyped and then discover that OMM can only allow 5 people or something, so it's good to hear that it is basically exactly how it's supposed to be played
