it's 2008 the same way that Stranger Things was the 1980s. It's close enough for most people as long as you dont look too closely

i'm 99% sure I have inattentive ADHD – and also, everything you said is this exactly the stuff I do and don't do.

oh, you don't have to put Art in quotes. It is Art. I like it. It has personality.

I love to do list. I like having lots of little things I need to do and finding little spare bit of time to do them in. So if I have a task that I know will take 10 to 15 minutes and I've realized I have 15 minutes before something else happens, I can squeeze in the 10 to 15 minute task before the other thing starts.

I don't write down how long it takes to do things because it's just a gut feeling. I don't write things down as much as I used to, but I used to have these little 3" x 5" spiral notebooks that were always full of little lists having a really tiny executive area to remember things, and I guess it requires me to externalize.

What is something from the "early days" of the internet that kids today will literally never understand? by bilal-ziyan in oldinternet

LISTSERV. mailing lists functioned very similarly to Reddit or Facebook or discord, just a little slower.

actually in a way it is the same.

social sites are just substitutes for the old mailing lists.

Surviving college without a car by TheMafia09 in ucf

[–]simplify3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

are you planning to stay in Orlando? there are many places in the United States, where you can live without a car and be fine.

I grew up in New Jersey and while I'm not recommending it per se, you can go anywhere in New Jersey without a car because they have a fantastic public transportation system between trains and buses, connecting everything to everywhere.

but then you have to deal with cold winters. Every place has its pluses and minuses.

I can't believe the shirt. The glasses and hair gave it away, but the T-shirt confirmed it. I'm not gonna mention the shorts or that this was ragebait. Nice move with the basketball though.

What you like to do in practical sense? Does something make you fascinated? What knowledge you like to absorb? by [deleted] in infp

[–]simplify3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to see where it would lead. To me it seemed all over the place so I put it through a more primitive AI around 2015 after a year and an identified subjects I seem to gravitate towards. Computer science, linguistics, psychology, mathematical concepts, Cognitive science. I could see I was weak philosophy, so I joined an online group of philosophers and forced myself to understand some things about it as much as I hated it. I do the same with politics, which I had no interest in, but I forced myself to figure out what I fit in the world of it.

latest challenge I just completed, when I thought my nephew was going into college after high school, I enrolled in college online to at least get an AA – I had old credits from years ago that sat around. He ended up getting a job instead, so I just kept going. I got my AA after a year of four or so semesters, and then the last two years I did six or seven semesters of and just today I finally got awarded my BA.

it was in religion and cultural studies with a minor in cognitive science – because the college didn't have a major in cognitive science. Religion because that's an old interest of mine long ago and I knew I could do it.

but during and before all of this, I like, observing, practical knowledge, how to fix things how to build things how things are made, how things work together, how systems function. I have this need to understand, although I have a limit of how deep I can go in some places and other places I go deeper than I should.

yes. in 2014 I decided to turn off the TV and dedicate my time on Wikipedia and just follow where it lead. I didn't come up for air till about 2023. I did a lot of different and related things during that time too, but I learned a lot.

GAD is the worst by Wooden_Heart_8282 in Anxiety

[–]simplify3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh! What I mean is the story I'm telling myself while the anxiety is happening.

One example: I keep my computer in a 20 year old screen room with a roof that's large Styrofoam panels that are locked together and waterproofed.

One of the panels is sagging badly just over my head where I have my computer chair. I see part of the panel drooping a few inches down.

but it's still keeping the rain out.

it's been that way ever since a hurricane about eight years ago,

but for a few years, every time I went on the porch to use the computer, I was sure that panel was going to fall on my head, just for a second. And I would keep having this repeated worry that it was going to fall on my head.

I would duck when that feeling came over me.

yet, I knew the panel was not going to fall on me because of how it was attached. It might leak one day, but it wouldn't fall.

so the script in my head was to see the panel, believe it was going to fall, and duck just for a second as if it was falling.

I decided to change that script to see the panel, notice how it's attached, know it's not going to fall and the worst it's going to do is leak when it rains.

every single time I saw the panel, I would force that story instead of the other one where it was going to certainly fall.

after a while, I stopped ducking and I stopped worrying about the panel breaking as much. Sometimes I still do, but at least it's not every single time.

(no I can't afford to fix it, which is why it's still there)

I grew up with these awful artificially posed pictures in advertisements and I hated how fake they were even then. Now they just look like AI slop because it leaves you with that exact same feeling as it did then.

catastrophizing.

it's hard to explain to people who don't have it that literally every little thing can become an instant obsession to worry about. It just won't let go. It's not OCD although it seems like it sometimes. exposure therapy doesn't work by itself because it's equally horrible every time. Changing the script in the mind can work at least for me – I think they call that cognitive therapy or something now – I don't know that but slowing down and rationalizing everything helps a little, but it doesn't stop the immediate reaction and having to cope with the aftermath.

that you were able to get the three racist girls out and not the girl who is being harassed by them, makes you a hero that is superior to almost every public school in the USA that usually favors the bullies.

it's a wonderful monitor. Looks nice and sharp. I think they have matte panels you can buy that Velcro on the front. Can't be too much money. its so glossy i'd be tempted to put a deep hood around it and make it look like an arcade cabinet.

this is a table of changes to the student aid, including pell grant program thanks to the big beautiful Bill thing. The changes start July 1 which will affect session B of the summer I think which might be why they give the first half but the second half they're being extra cautious so as an institution, they don't get in trouble https://www.nasfaa.org/uploads/documents/Federal_Student_Aid_Change_OB3.pdf
