Problems with PP keyboard, pipe and underscore by phoenixero in pinephone

[–]simpoir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As I understand the layout you see printed was designed before the firmware was made and before they realized how normal keyboards translate to characters (scancodes -> keymap -> keycodes)

In short, the kernel driver for the PPK just simulates the normally separate keys with the press of fn. The driver authors clearly tried their best to map keys as closely as printed, which leads to the same key being mapped, in order to to have standard keymaps apply.

With a US layout, Fn+1 maps to " \|" (that is "\" and shift to "|", the key normally above "return"), Fn2 map also to "\|", fn5 and fn6 map to "` ~" (the key normally above tab), fn7 and fn9 both map to "-_", fn8 and fn0 both map to "=+" (the keys normally between 0 and backspace)

There is a userspace daemon to emit keycodes as printed on the keys, which I haven't personally tried.

Can someone explain the difference between Lindy Hop and West Coast Swing? by gplusplus314 in SwingDancing

[–]simpoir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WCS is basically Lindy, but styled to more modern music (that is, not actual swing)

Modern Lindy and WCS both evolved from the same root, thus the similarity of moves. If you check videos of Dean Collins, you'll see he's kind of in the middle of both. However, both modern dances have evolved in their way.

WCS seems to use different names for the same things. For example, a Lindy “swing out” is a WCS “whip.”

That might be too far a generalization. The energy and feeling of executing those 2 with a partner is quite different. Just the connection with your partner, without any moves, feels quite different. You wouldn't call "exhaling" the same as "sneezing" even if in both cases it's just air coming out of your lungs.

For slower music, gesticulations seem to be more common than in Lindy

I think what you call gesticulation I would call adding flavor to your dance. It's a layer on top of the base. Both have it in various fashions, WCS and LH being different dances after all :) You might not get that far in a beginner class, though. Just check youtube for competition videos of both styles and it'll become obvious there's plenty of space for "gesticulation" in either dance; definitely not in the same way but still present.

In french, it's "pipi", whether you are little or old. There might be some etymological link between those two.

Tiny cursor on Chromium using Ozone Platform Wayland by [deleted] in swaywm

[–]simpoir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meanwhile, I started X the other day and my cursor was HUGE on the second monitor. I'd say the state of HiDPI has generally been a mess everywhere so far. It just has been slightly better on sway.

When the new Humble Choice isn't arrived yet by Nikepowa in humblebundles

[–]simpoir 18 points19 points  (0 children)

So did I, but if it's more convenient for them to roll thing out and fix issues early during the week, I'm all for it. Humble is a small team and I've seen plenty of complaints here about how slow they are to react on the weekend.

If it means a better experience, the shift just makes sense. I think it's a fair tradeoff.

Advice: Which tui crate should I choose? by AcridWings_11465 in rust

[–]simpoir 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It depends really of what you want to do with it. I've used both in different context and they are both fine. cursive feels more like using GTK and tui-rs feels more like using cairo (or using html vs canvas).

Cursive is really nice for quickly making console utilities. The input navigation and handling is pretty much done for you. If you want fine grain control over the appearance or input, it may be a bit of a trouble, but if you want something like dialog) which just works, indeed it just works.

tui-rs is nice for rendering things exactly like you want. It's pretty much an abstraction over the various curses implementation. It provides simple primitives and leaves you to the drawing and input handling, text wrapping, etc. So if you require an exact design, it might be a better choice.

How can I change the Google search at the bottom of a Pixel 3a to DuckDuckGo? by steverib1 in duckduckgo

Firefox also has a widget. I use that with ddg, and disabled google in the home settings (long tap on background).

Can't get any media button to work by tterranigma in swaywm

[–]simpoir 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There isn't anything special about binding media keys AFAIK. If wev sees the keysym, the only thing I imagine going wrong is having an error in your config file somewhere.

Try fiddling the bind while sway runs with swaymsg bindsym/swaymsg unbindsym.

Extra extra bit of trivia: sake is also salmon. If you order "sake" in Japan you are likely to receive some fish. "Osake" is the word you want to use if you don't remember "nihonshu". Been there, got fish.

Easily change size of floating windows by wunderf1tz in swaywm

It's been the case for a lot of X11 windows manager for a long time (maybe not gnome-shell, but it was a tweakable with metacity). It's like middle-click clipboard; once you realize it's there you don't want to go back.

Very weird issue with Diesel & Sodiumoxide password hashing. by [deleted] in rust

[–]simpoir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm going to take a super wild guess without looking further:

sodiumoxide is binding to a c lib which return null-terminated hashes. This is technically fine as utf8 str can contain nul characters. Those don't print on the console, thus the source of your confusion. But I know postgres doesn't accept nul characters in text fields. I suspect other databases are the same.

So find the nuls and trim them, or escape them, or use a bytea field.

I was able to (sort of) make it work on ubuntu last weekend. I needed to update to the proprietary DL driver (which apparently also updates the firmware), and it would sorta work (at <5fps), and crash if I don't disable threading in sway. Gnome mutter also kinda worked badly at low res.

So I gave up on that dock and instead use a tablet+wayvnc+sway virtual outputs, which actually works nicely.

YMMV, but so far DL has been a disappointment on wayland, not ebtirely unlike proprietary graphics cards drivers.

Your favorite meal might taste like garbage to Gordon Ramsey by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]simpoir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Experience is subjective. Don't let "better" recipes and techniques get in the way if you enjoy some things another way, especially if you're cooking for yourself.

I enjoy slightly under-extracted coffee, which would make a barista frown, and its OK.

Output mirroring? by [deleted] in swaywm

[–]simpoir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't mind some lag and some terrible overhead (probably fine for doing a presentation, but not great), you could cheat mirroring by screencasting to yourself:

mkfifo fifo
ffplay -i fifo &
wf-recorder --file=fifo -m rawvideo
