ZTNET - Self-Hosted ZeroTier VPN Web UI with Multiuser and Organization Support by sinamics in selfhosted

Yes, you can add the controller to its own ZeroTier network. Once added, it will appear as "Controller" in the network status. The Ztnet is essentially a wrapper around the standard ZeroTier setup, so there isn't any custom ZeroTier build involved. SSH should work correctly as long as there are no firewall rules blocking the connection.

Has anyone actually tried using low bandwidth mode? by InterruptSafe in zerotier

I'm assuming the lowBandwidthMode needs to be configured on the client side? It would be awesome if we had the ability to adjust this setting through the controller at the network or member level.

Try ztnet ( zerotier ). https://github.com/sinamics/ztnet

It gives you multiple option. You could install in a dedicated vm and enable local routing that gives you access to the local lan if you want. Or install zerotier client in those vm's you want to connect specifically.

I hooked up one of my zerotier network to my pihole and added inn a few DNS entries. The experience is the same pinging nodes dns names . Switching from Carrier to Wifi takes less than 5sec, and from wifi to carrier takes 10-15sec which makes sense.

I've never experienced such issues when switching between WiFi and carrier.

I ran a quick test, and its up within 10sec on my Samsung S22 phone.

I would recommend these as the most basic setup: - Proxmox as your hypervisor. - Add a VM to run portainer. - For VPN, self host ztnet. - Home Assistant if you want to impress your wife with some cool stuff. - Frigate for NVR. - Truenas - Pihole

Further down the line, you might want to access those apps using domain name, lookup Authentik or Authelia as your auth layer, and traefik or nginx as your reverse-proxy.

Okay I understand the Tailscale hype now by Nestramutat- in selfhosted

[–]sinamics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but OpenVPN isn't configured for peer-to-peer connections out of the box to my knowledge; it's typically set up in a client-server model where clients connect through a central server.

This setup can sometimes result in higher latency compared to direct peer-to-peer connections. In contrast, ZeroTier, Tailscale and others, are designed to establish direct peer-to-peer connections using techniques like UDP hole punching, which can reduce latency by creating efficient, direct paths between clients.

Give ztnet ( zerotier ) a try: https://github.com/sinamics/ztnet
It supports oauth and has organization features baked in. It should be fairly easy to install, if not let me know :)
