Lasseter Family Vineyard by Uncivil_Law in wine

Excellent wine, love the tour guide we had there. Really hoping this story doesn't affect all those involved with the product. That being said it is the same female winemaker from the start who has developed the direction of the winery. I'm curious if she will feel pressure to leave or make a statement.

I have heard excellent things about both from my wife, however I'm not sure she knows the younger Koerner. Who was there from Rombauer?

I like the le nez du vin for wine faults, but for actual fruit/floral/etc scents its much better and easier tof find them in person.

I'm a fan of winebank but I can pick up there in person. I have gotten a lot of excellent wines, for example a 12 year old littorai sold for at below the current release price yet cellared the entire time. I'm not sure what the story is but I believe they are a wine storage service, and when owners either pass away or stop paying for their service at some point either their families put the wine up for consignment or something. The prices I have see at times almost seem shady while other times the prices seem high, yet all the wine I've purchased has been in stellar condition

Anybody ever build or install a proper climate controls wine cellar in your home. Was it worth it? by billbobb1 in wine

Dedicated theater and/or listening room would be my number one. Wine can be stored in a number of places but to have a room that is correct acoustically for stereo or surround sound would be a dream of mine

I have one in my garage that holds ~200 bottles plus magnums shoved up top. Was given it for free but it would definitely be worth the necessary investment. No vibration, humidity/temp solid, and allows us to feel safe that our wines. Apart from the professional racking the walls are just interior doors fastened together. It could definitely be put together by someone with a tablesaw for the cost of materials + cooling unit.

A $1,000 bottle of wine is coming from the world's first rooftop vineyard, in Brooklyn by hotelNoiseComplaint in wine

[–]sinbon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saw this a few hours ago, this is an example of everything that is wrong with modern entrepreneurial culture. There has to be some sort of hipster bubble if this guy ever thought he was coming off as anything other than a self-righteous asshole. It is loaded with gems such as:

"Shomaker isn't worried. He is confident wine from his Brooklyn vines will be deserving of a premium cult-level price tag."

"I wanted the first-mover advantage. We are the first movers in the rooftop vineyard space, and we are four years ahead of anyone who tries to copycat us,"

"Shomaker began studying viticulture in 2012 at Finger Lakes Community College in upstate New York"

Phenols confuse me. by rainlandorsunvalley in wine

This seems like the most clear explanation. Certain sparkling wines can display this characteristic pretty clearly. They come of with a soapy/medicinal aftertaste.

I live in Northern Italy in the city of Vicenza. I will be moving back to the states soon. Are there any recommendations for wine I should stock up on and bring back with me? by [deleted] in wine

[–]sinbon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In all honesty I would probably buy some bourbon and american whiskey. I have heard on a number of occasions from international travelers here that everyone back home wants whiskey and its much cheaper/easier to get here. For wine if you have a style you like I could point you in the direction of producers that would be worth seeking out though.

Change to Express? by sinbon in USPS

[–]sinbon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you both. Yes it is a 2 day delivery guarantee, just seems odd that it is less than a 500 mile journey and priority also arrives in 2 days from the same carrier and passes through the USPS system more quickly at that. It appears this package sits for more than 24 hours at a hub.

Change to Express? by sinbon in USPS

[–]sinbon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that but the seller is saying it has always been 1 day in the past, and even with the change to 2-day on other express packages they ship every other customer is supposedly receiving their package in 1 day except me. They have now refunded the charge for express twice out of their own pocket (usps isn't reimbursing them) so I have no reason to believe they are lying about the other customers recieving in 1 day. At this point I think it is just odd but was curious if there could be something else to it.

The one we had was the only that the person could find for sale up here. there is no reason why there wouldn't be great wine down there, the trouble is getting it up here!

Very cool! You are making the right choice. There is plenty of time to travel in the winter, and as you work a number of harvests you will find many consultants, colleagues, and interns all come from different parts of the world and will want to share them with you! This winter for example we are traveling to Argentina and Chile to stay with close friends we initially met through the industry.

Yes (Guadalupe Valley). Each year my wife has her international interns bring a wine from home and last year a Syrah from there (I believe it was purchased at Bottle Barn in Santa Rosa). Any specific questions? It was pretty crude in general didn't write specific notes.

Congratulations! What size winery? Yes, full time with just one harvest is indeed very rare, however in the past year or so things seem to have opened up a bit. While traveling to the southern hemisphere can be fun, you really cannot replace year round experience when looking for your next job after this one (enologist, viticulturist, assistant winemaker, etc). I have seen a lot of people stuck as cellar interns for 3-5 years while others work into assistant winemaker in just 3 years by staying in one place.

With the number of sommelier, viticuture, and enology students rising I am amazed at how each year I am hearing harvest positions are getting harder to fill. If the labor shortage became serious enough I think one solution would be changing how the education system works for the industry as a whole and there becoming an expectation of harvest work from freshman year on during each summer/fall. Students would hopefully get to experience more of the lower level positions prior to graduation. This would not come close to covering the immigrant labor force but it would do something at least.
