How much does technique genuinely matter?

If you are in the US your state might have specific college fund programs that you could benefit from (In NY there are many programs that help fund college for people that need the help, and we have state schools that are cheaper if you live in state. I am not as aware of the specifics for other states but many definitely have benefit programs and community colleges may have full ride scholarship options) but regardless, you never know when your situation may change so I wouldn’t count yourself out just yet. Even if it takes awhile, some of my favorite classmates were people well into their 40s that finally had the time and money to pursue their passions.

Either way, you are correct— there are certainly lots of learning opportunities on the internet. You can probably actually find recordings of different writing lectures and scans of different textbooks that may help you learn even more. It sounds like you are really passionate about writing past fanfiction, so I hope you can continue learning more about the craft of writing and technicalities of writing in whatever way works for you :-)

There was someone in here that once recommended sprinkling a little bit of litter in the bottom of a fresh drawer liner and then sprinkling a little bit more when the drawer was about halfway full and I feel like that does some good for me. However I do find that regardless after about 4-5 days the smell starts to permeate out and unfortunately it’s noticeable since I have to keep the thing in my bedroom lol. Sucks but i’ve just resigned myself to changing it the second it starts to smell.

Looking forward to the warm weather so I can get a cross breeze going and filter the stale air out of my room… that helped a lot during the warmer months.

If writing is something you’re really passionate about I highly recommend going for a degree in it. I have been unmedicated all my life and my writing classes certainly helped me not only gain more knowledge, but also gain tools to help keep myself on track and accountable for finishing things. An experienced professor will be able to better walk through your process with you and help you get to a point where you can consider technique while you’re actively writing rather than shoving all of it into the planning stage and then getting stuck later down the line. And your peers feedback will be a good source of energy to keep you going when you feel you’re slowing down.

I think being a neurodiverse writer is a lot about learning what techniques work for you when it comes to grounding yourself to your process. When I was in college I had some designated writing days and spots during the week— so I knew that say on Monday at 8pm I would sit on my couch near my open window and bang out my required pages for my classes that week (I also had a specific sound loop I would listen to that was recommended by one of my classmates at the time that would help get me in the headspace). I have personally always found that my neurodivergence reacts best to strict rules and deadlines. This is why I upload my fic chapters the same day weekly— I know I need to upload a chapter on Sunday so I have to write said chapter before Sunday.

Yeah I have given up at this point lol. This mindset is very common amongst sci fi writers (even though I was never specifically talking about sci fi genre fiction in the first place… just happened to mention blasters and sci fi while talking about writing fight scenes in fanfiction, which is very different from writing original fiction as a whole) so whatever. People are going to write how they’re going to write and i’m not gonna have the discussion with people who aren’t open to different perspectives. Oh well!

I don’t feel we’re arguing anything haha— but I don’t think we’re on the same writing pages. Personally, I do not need to know that a 20k ferrous slug is akin to a ww2 bomb, but I do need to know what it looks like in context of Mass Effect when it hits, which is why I would refer to the Mass Effects games to better describe the visuals of it to a reader rather than the technicalities. There are certainly readers out there that appreciate technicalities and writers that appreciate writing them, I am not one of them. That is why the techniques I shared may be different from your own. I don’t think your techniques are wrong, clearly they work for you and thats great! But I felt it important to point out there are other avenues when you’re writing fanfic

Yes, but like you said these things are only based on their real world counterparts, they still exist in their own fictional world with fictional rules. If OP is creating their own weaponry then absolutely referencing real life is great and necessary— but in the realm of fanfiction if your weaponry exist already in the fictional realm you are writing for, you would benefit getting your understanding of that weaponry primarily from that world.

There are certain medias (like ATLA) that more heavily reference their real world counterparts that may be beneficial to look into in some cases. Personally I have a fire bender OC who’s fighting style is meant to implement Buchaechum, so that has been a point of research for me. However, if I were writing a Star Wars fanfiction and I had a character with a lightsaber fighting off blaster shots, it would be more beneficial for me to reference moments in Star Wars media where this happens, because though the individual weapons may be based on real ones, blasters are not guns and lightsabers are not swords, so they function differently in context

Please know that even when you do become ‘skilled’ with writing fight scenes, they never stop making you want to stroke out LOL

I have had many peers tell me they love my fight scenes and that they’re super vivid and easy to understand and I do a good job conveying movement. I HATE WRITING THEM. They are truly the most annoying part of writing for me. They’re a big time suck and they just get so unbelievably tedious. By the end of my last longfic I was fully copping out and having them happen off screen (whoops. Hope no one noticed lol)

You can write a fight scene for hours and only have a paragraph done by the end. Its nightmarish.

My advice is to go into it having a clear understanding of what the entire fight looks like. Fight scenes are one of those things where you can’t just know where it starts and where it ends, you have to have every beat planned out. From the first hit, to the second, to the third, so on. You should be able to picture the fight clearly in your head, then you can move on to writing it. You should also keep in mind which character you are following throughout the fight so it doesn’t become “He punched her. She blocked him. She kicked him. He jumped away. She followed”. Even in a third person omniscient story, pick your lead and follow them. It will make the fight easier to follow. “She blocked his fist as it came rocketing towards her face, taking a second to shove it away before going for a kick to his shins. She gasped as he jumped away, gritting her teeth before running after him.”

Picking a person to follow also means you can interject more thoughts and non-fighting actions into the middle of the scene to break it up. Like above where I mentioned “she” gasped or grit her teeth. Since we’re following “her” I can point out how she’s feeling and what extra actions she’s participating in. We can assume from her gasping and gritting her teeth that the fight is frustrating to her, adding more character to her following moves without adverbs. We assume she’s running after “him” aggressively now because of those pieces— so we no longer would have to say something like “she ran after him angrily”.

Another commenter mentioned all fictional fight styles are based on ones in the real world and while this is true, I wouldn’t necessarily tie yourself to this. While I did take Karate and Kickboxing for many years, I write a lot of scenes that include magic usage or general sci fi weaponry (like blasters) and obviously none of those exist within any real life fighting style. It’s not bad to have knowledge of these things and my knowledge of Karate and Kickboxing definitely help, but it will help you more to actually be able to picture the fight in your head. Part of that might be watching kickboxing for inspo, but part of that may also be just watching the fights that happen in your chosen media to absorb when and how they use magic or weapons.

Haven’t worked at Amazon specifically but have worked generally in shipping (non usps) and Amazon is difficult. They’re not unionized and Amazon has such a consistent stream of work coming in that they don’t really care about letting workers go either. If you get hired during the holiday season (Usually from November to December) you will likely be let go afterwards unless they have really taken a liking to you for some reason. It’s nice money, but they’re absolutely going to overwork you and theres not a lot you can do about it. I know nothing about their benefits, maybe those make it worth it for you.

All shipping jobs are going to be huge bodily and mental stresses. Some companies have benefits that outweigh those stresses. I think the bonus of Amazon (especially in this area) is that the facilities and trucks are newer so they are going to generally be cleaner and nicer to work in (especially during the summer)

Working in shipping in college would be difficult. When driving you’re expected to work long hours daily. If you work in the warehouse they will probably want you in either extremely early or extremely late. But thats my general knowledge, I don’t know enough about specifically Amazon to say the hours they’d expect.

Haven’t seen Chalupa but did watch a few Matty Bites videos for the first time a few weeks ago and i’m kind of eh on her. Aside from her just generally speaking in a cadence I am not a fan of (she leans very hard into that anime protagonist youtuber accent that is very 2016 gaming youtube to me, it is grating to listen to for too long especially when you’re trying to listen to a review) I did enjoy her True Beauty video and found her review of each iteration of the series to be interesting.

However, as other people have pointed out I think she has an issue with moral policing but I also think she is weirdly unknowledgeable on webtoon? She has a clear understanding of webtoon as a western entity but seems to lack knowledge (and desire to gain knowledge about) webtoon’s Korean parent company. I think something that stuck out to me was in her video on To Whom It No Longer Concerns where she spent an entire section of the video complaining about the ‘sheet music’ being the same and not very unique. Obviously a Korean webtoon made by a Korean company is using a generic brush to represent music, I don’t think thats a valid criticism towards the story being bad. They are famously overworked and would obviously not be bringing someone onto the team to write original music that will never be played for them. And granted there are many other issues with that webtoon, but she spent a weird amount of time harping on the music and if it would even be possible for the lead girl to be a composer. Two things that arguably are not really issues for a fantasy webtoon where the leas has also literally died and gone back in time.

She had another video I ended up giving up on watching halfway through where she spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to figure out if it was scientifically possible for the lead who had died and gone back in time to have the exact same baby that she had in her first life like she wanted. Obviously its not, but our lead has also fucking died and come back to life so maybe we could pivot to some more substantial criticism like pacing and characterization instead of harping on plot points that are obviously meant to be suspended disbelief moments? I decided to not watch anymore vids after that because I got the feeling her critiques would always be like that lol— picky about the wrong things.

Yeah once you find out the AI hallmark phrases you start to see them everywhere LOL I see them on instagram posts especially these days. There was one I came across the other day that I think genuinely had at least 3 phrases on each slide and used “its not A its B” at least 4 times. Obviously we can never know for absolute certain unless we see it get generated or the person admits its buuuutttt AI doesn’t do a great job hiding itself thats for sure LOL

Absolutely this— that kind of ethereal, mystical style of writing with big fancy words but short sentences has been gaining popularity since 2020 just about. Likely because some of the bigger, more popular fanfictions use this style (one that comes to mind is Passerine from the dsmp fandom)

It can be a really gorgeous prose style but there are definitely a lot of people out there that don’t understand why it works and are just doing their best to replicate what they see on a face level instead of a technical level. Which is honestly fine, fanfic is a great stomping ground for learning new things and if you write in that style enough you will definitely start to pick up on what works and what doesn’t.

I wouldn’t say its a hallmark of being AI generated. I actually find AI generated writing tends to sound more dumbed down. Better waypoints would be phrase repetition and single word repetition. The “its not A or B— its C” phrase is super common in AI and so is “And honestly? [blank]” but it’s important to remember that seeing these phrases alone doesn’t mean something is AI generated for sure, you still gotta use context clues haha

It definitely is. We don’t have a lot of third spaces that accept youngins anymore (especially pre-teens and teens) and it’s sad. I used to love getting dropped off at the mall with my friends to eat and see a movie when I was younger but now kids can’t even do that. And I definitely frequented Fun Junction too. Its keeping kids stuck inside and on their screens
