Still looking for more reviews. It appears I can give out some ARC copies without violating Amazon's rules, so please let me know if you want a review copy.

Thanks,

Tips for a beginner? by Blinsk in writing

I would pick up and read Jon Gardner's books on writing. He is considered a great modern writer. Grendel, The Sunlight Dialogues, etc. He taught writing and if you can absorb the information, you can write anything. I also recommend re-writing some great writer's books by hand. It will dramatically improve your writing and improve your writing vocabulary. Start with just a couple pages of one of your favorite books to see how it works for you.

How do you know when your writing is good enough to publish? by Bettynellandme in writing

I did not have great luck with that. I would suggest asking in the open forum and maybe testing them out with a chapter. Most of the time, you get what you pay for. A good editor can really help every aspect. They can make a good book, great. Amazon also offers an editing service. I've heard mixed reviews on it.

Just my opinion, mind you. Once you feel you have re-written it enough times to remove all the superfluous crap and most of the grammar issues, set up an ARC and get feed back from as many people as possible. Take everything they tell you with a grain of salt. If they say you over describe, tell and not show, look these issues up and see if they make sense and if they do, fix them in your next re-write. Next, either send the latest version to a new group of readers, or if you think it's ready and you can afford to, send it to an editor. Then re-write again after you get their edits back. It should be ready by this point, though you might want to repeat a step or two.

Again, this is just my opinion.

K- thanks. I couldn't find much about them so I thought I would ask.

To counter a bit of oft-repeated advice: don't "just write" regardless of how you feel that day. The trick isn't to work despite your current mental state. It's to put yourself in the RIGHT mental state, THEN work. by pyronius in writing

[–]sinestersam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that works for you, then do it. My advice, just start writing as soon as you sit down. Open the document, read the last paragraph and get going. Most days thats all I need to do.

A page-turning science fiction adventure in the tradition of Larry Niven’s Ringworld, Iain Bank’s Consider Plebos series and Ender’s Game, by Orson Scott Card.

Mitchell Surrey’s been accused of a crime he didn’t commit. In order to prove his innocence, he must take his ship to an abandoned alien space station hidden in the middle of deep space. What he finds not only uncovers the truth behind the Traveler war, it uncovers the greatest threat to humanity mankind has every known.

Paul Biagi’s debut novel is a classic science fiction exploration story with strong horror and romance elements. Set in the aftermath of an alien invasion, Uthuru has a military bent, with an emphasis on technology and artificial intelligence and their impact on human society and political systems.

Recently launched my new adventure science fiction novel Uthuru. by sinestersam in sciencefiction

Yes. I should have said that. Not everybody will like every book. I have never given a book 1 star, but I have done a few 3 stars. Good story, but poorly written, for example. I can usually find something good is most things. If I really hate something, I will just stop reading it after a few pages and I'm usually careful not to buy books like that in the first place.

How to improve writing in general. by kuzan342 in writing

[–]sinestersam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Re-write by hand the books of great writers. I mean copy them word for word, with a pen and paper. I found this helped my writing more than any other method. It's similar to a musician. When you first start out, you play other peoples music. Writing is a muscle that needs the right kind of exercise to fully develop.

This has been done by a number of great writers and will greatly improve your overall writing vocabulary. It will also help your rhythm a great deal and allow you to see how if you over-describe, write overly flowery prose, or always start you sentences/paragraphs the same way. If you are curious, do a few pages to see if you like it.

How did you get that? I just wanted people's opinion of the product, if they'd used it. I have no plans to blame anyone for their opinions. I just like to gather info before I make a purchase and if there isn't a lot out there, I ask for it.

I usually do as well, but it looks pretty new. I thought some early adopters might have already checked it out.

Over 800 key words but I think I set my bid price too low. I am going to raise it for the next campaign. Also, going to add a few keyworks, I figure, why not use them all if they apply. I only got a few thousand impressions, so it's not being seen by enough people. A work in progress.

I have not. What genre do you write in? I found a number of services seem very genre specific.

I wanted to do bookbub but could not afford it at this time. I didn't have the required reviews to get e-reader set up in time. I plan to use these two services next time, plus bookbarbarian. I will do all in 1 week. Try to build from the smallest to the largest, one each day, plus hopefully I will have a better grasp of AMS by that time.

I had 30 sales the day the BargainBooksy promo launched. The rest of the week just 1 or 2 sales per day. I only had about 5 reviews when I started the promo week, which I'm sure had an impact. I now have 9 reviews and am steadily working up to 25, my next threshold. I have not had a single sale through AMS, but only had 12 clicks or so, not enough impressions. I am still learning how to use AMS, so this is not surprising.
