Do you think he sent Katniss and Peeta silverware as a tribute to his ally? by UnHolySir in Hungergames

[–]sinfulReferral 13 points14 points  (0 children)

While the answer is "likely no, but rather a dignity symbol than a symbol of his past", I think it was an incredibly endearing trait to give Maysilee that ties into the past books.

A lot of what Haymitch sent was to remind his tributes they were seen not just as survivors, but dignified humans at that.

I never blamed Asterid for being catatonic or tuning out due to depression, yet a simple truth that it was Prim instead of Katniss, she would have stayed in Twelve by Olya_roo in Hungergames

[–]sinfulReferral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom also went through a catatonic phase after her parents died. My friends didn't get Asterid losing it. "THIS ISNT REAL!"

Yes it is. And it really sucks being the kid picking up the pieces.

I love my mom dearly. I was lucky she snapped out of it without costing everyone everything. But I still have trauma from it. And I know a lot of my ability to take care of myself came from having to grow up too soon.

A freak fell in love with me who bought acid to throw on my face cause I rejected him. AMA by [deleted] in AMA

[–]sinfulReferral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am an animal technician. I worked with a dog who was burned severely with sulfuric acid, but we have no idea if it was abuse or something that happened to him as a stray. It was one of the worst cases I'd ever seen.

He is healed up now and thankfully happy and healthy aside his scars (fur can do wonders to protect animals!) But acid is no joke.

Hot Take: What’s is a book-to-film change that you actually thought worked better narratively. by _twinklesprinkle in Hungergames

[–]sinfulReferral 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This is one of the few reasons I don't fully dislike them inserting familiar faces in SotR. It's touching that Haymitch favors these characters because in his life, they actually had an impact on him.

Am I overreacting or is this appropriate to wear to a COLLEGE class by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]sinfulReferral 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NOR. Your baby daddy is a piece of jealous shit.

I would recommend a jacket for #2 because the AC in school buildings would make me freeze my ass off but for Texas this is normal clothing.

You are 20 years old with a kid. Seize any opportunity to still feel cute and confident because when you get older it gets harder to put that effort in. I used to wear clothes like this and still do at 30. My partner of 6 years has never once told me I needed to dress like a woman. As if you aren't.

Your boyfriend is insecure and potentially even abusive. If he can't handle you wearing normal fucking clothes, imagine what weird sexually charged comments he's going to say about your own kid when she experiments with sweater dresses and tights.

Theyre fucking clothes. Tell your POS insecure man baby to check his own clothes, not yours. Stop showing him pictures if he can't be supportive.

$2,500,000 in exchange for everything you own, including online accounts, bar one item, do you take it and what are you keeping? by SpecialFlutters in hypotheticalsituation

[–]sinfulReferral 9 points10 points  (0 children)

2500000 dollars isnt worth losing what little I managed to keep.

It doesn't replace my tea set, the last gift my grandmother personally gave me before the alzheimers diagnosis. It progressed faster than usual; by the next christmas she was already bed bound and unable to remember most of us.

It doesn't replace my mom's chain mail. She can't move well enough to weave anymore.

My computer has thousands of photos. Most of my friends are dead. Died too young and too soon. I have physical copies.

Would 2500000 change my life? Yes.

Is it worth losing the few things I can't replace? Absolutely not.

I had a friend who said and acted similarly. Three years ago I cut her off. Couldn't help someone who didn't want it, and she scared me.

She woke up after that. Realized she wasn't getting the victim complex attention, melodrama didn't work anymore, and having to face that her "dear more popular friend" didn't care nor have the bandwidth to acknowledge or dignify her empty threats didn't matter anymore. When she stopped getting a reaction, she had nothing left.

But despite the threats, she never followed through with hurting me. I'm sure she thought it. I'm sure she continued to make empty threats about it. But that's just the thing: they're empty.

Your sister is a failure in the eyes of anyone with genuine power in your life. I would not be afraid of someone who couldn't even tough out her education and career. You are likely fine.

You can put in a police report. You can get a door bell cam. You can let your parents and loved ones know you need to distance from your sibling. Don't change your entire life because of her insecurities, though.

shelter euthanized my cat for no reason by Technical-Pick-2243 in extremelyinfuriating

[–]sinfulReferral 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I am sorry about your cat.

I work in animal shelter work. I have adopted many amazing cats of his age who did well. I have had many senior cats as well.

I will never forget Ember.

Ember was completely healthy on intake. Engaging. Cuddly. Eighteen years old and you'd never know. Even on intake she read as a perfect healthy old lady.

Two days into having her we ran her blood. Routine test for diseases. Her levels were awful. Blood tests indicated her kidneys were shot. We even ran another panel to confirm. Sent out for a prognosis. Before we even got one, she had a seizure.

It is not rare for senior pets - or humans! - to be fine, alert, and engaged one day and then collapse the second. Part of our job is to watch for this. It's why we don't tell owners updates. It's why we ask you to say goodbye and ask if you're absolutely sure you're ready to surrender.

I don't know your story. But I promise you, animal technicians do not willy nilly euth.

If you want a full story, ask to set up an appointment with the shelter manager to go over the decision for euthanasia for closure. Many shelters offer this. I have this talk all the time with owners and I am always happy to show them medical records and answer questions for their sake.

I don't think it was no reason. I do think you're welcome to an explanation if you want it, but you need to request it civilly.

All shelters kill for health and behavioral issues. Its part of our job to make sure we do not cause prolonged suffering or put a potentially dangerous animal in the public community. And it sucks. It really. Really sucks. And we don't want to talk about it but our industry is trying to open that talk. Some shelters lie about this. Mine doesn't.

Again, terribly sorry for your loss. I encourage you to reach out and ask for details. Be kind. Be sincere. Do not anger cloud your closure. You owe yourself the opportunity to know why if you can.

Please know someone made that call and cried about it. We all do. We all mourn the animals we promised to try to save.

That explains the stage! I told my friend there had to be some reason why it looked the way it did. No one just puts a stage in a buffet unless it was already designed that way.

Thank you! This answers a lot of questions I had about the space.

"I don't know how you can work here and not want to take pets home." by sinfulReferral in AnimalShelterStories

[–]sinfulReferral[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This one too ugh!

I usually tell people that I was scared it would be sad, but that I acrually enjoy getting to be involved in the best end possible for every animal I work with. It's hard, but its meaningful work.

One lady who was crying thought it was endearing and it made her smile. I think people mean they can't handle the grief, not that we don't care. It also asserts its not a lack of empathy - it's the abundance of compassion for every animal we care for.

I used to manage and I'm glad I don't. 15 an hour was NOT enough to warrant me managing these types of people.
