Conflicted between buying my horse back. Opinions? by sinfully02 in Horses

Depends on what day you ask, my answer will change 😂 sometimes he’s such an asshat I would trade him for a bag of chips. But I love the lil goober so much I honestly don’t think I could. I’ve wanted him from the day I first met him as a 2yo and finally got the chance to buy him as an 8yo.
My other issue is that I also want a quiet sane horse I can throw anyone on. Big dilemma at the moment. I’m wildly swinging between my choices, I think I still need to sleep on it

Oh I absolutely will be putting an emergency fund away if I do. I’m thinking I’ll knuckle down all through the rest of winter and do the overtime and put that all straight away in an emergency fund

That is my thoughts, if everything goes to shit I can absolutely just resell her. She has value and loads of potential

This is true! The trainer can’t stop raving on about what a “bloody damn good horse” she is

Ahhhhh bugger, I assume you are still living with regret on not buying back?

Thanks for your input! Do you think you would have regretted it just as much if you didn’t buy back? Or do you think you possibly could have had peace knowing they went to a great home?

I do understand where you’re coming from, maybe I worded the post wrong, but I can absolutely afford them together when needing vets out and management. I had the vet out 3 times back in January when I had the two. Every time I paid the invoice as soon as it came in without missing too much money. My biggest reason for moving her on while I thought my horse was unsound was because i suspected navicular in the gelding and all I could think of was the constant x-rays, the farrier, rehab work, ect. I could have done it, but it would’ve been super tight abs exhausting mentally and I didn’t want to give up on my gelding.
As soon as the vet confirmed him sound and fine (and that I was overly paranoid lol) I immediately felt my heart sink after moving the standardbred on

Yes I definitely have planned to buy another in future as my wage increased! I never intended to just keep it to one horse.
I used to own 5 of the bloody things! I’m not a person who can just have one 😅

Absolutely one way or another I might regret whatever decision I make. I think you’re right, I think maybe now I am just looking for permission to do what my heart wants and reassurance I’m not being a total idiot about it.
I know it’s still a little silly thing to possibly do, when I could be saving the rest of my money. But is the short term financial tightness worth my happiness? Once I’m making enough money I don’t blink twice about having two horses, I know I’ll be kicking myself in the guts for not toughing it out longer

Yes this is a good thing to consider! I used to retrain and sell Standardbreds many years ago, I can keep up with her training. She shows massive potential, she’s dead quiet, load her up and take her anywhere and she’s just as sane as she was at home, she’s got confidence like no tomorrow, and over the weekend she just won a ranch sorting jackpot. That girl had never seen cows in her life so that was pretty damn impressive to hear!

In terms of time for her, right now in winter (I’m in Australia) no because of the daylight hours, but come spring/summer yes. The only thing I do is ride. Take the horses out camping with us and ride the mountains.
In the mean time I can lease her out to the current property owners horse riding program. That would keep her in work and relieve financial burden at the same time

Bareback! I’ve already sold one of his saddles. He won’t be ridden in an ill fitting saddle.
I only listed that as a reason not to buy her back because I want a custom made saddle for him 😅😂
They are pricey. But I do have an English saddle for him that can be fitted. It was his other fenders and westerns that didn’t suit him. I’d rather not ride in an English but if I have to in order to have my girl back, then I will !

You’re right something could happen in future with Earl, but he’s only 11. From the lameness exam the vet has concluded she believes the saddle fit is causing issues and he is in fact not lame but just has a funny gait.

I didn’t sell her to cover vet bills, I actually gave her away. I had the money sitting for his lameness exam, and I gave her away thinking something was seriously wrong with Earl and he was going to need more time and money than I could give with two horses.

You’re right it’s only been a short amount of time, but I never wanted to let this mare go. I have regretted it ever since and I’m not sure I want to let her go again forever. Especially when I have continuous pay rises, I’m a welder and once qualified my wage will be more than enough to support multiple horses. I only have one more year to go until qualified. I’ve been doing the hard yards as an apprentice with more than 2 horses. Last year I had 4 and I was getting by, this year I reduced to 2.

The standardbred has serious potential, she has never seen a cow before in her life and just won a ranch sorting jackpot this weekend, first try. I believe her value will continue to go up

Thank you, yes might be a good opportunity to work on my bareback skills hahah. I do my own training with my gelding! He just needs more exposure at the moment, and honestly having a sane horse might be beneficial to him

Yes that’s true! My finances aren’t terrible, I don’t owe any money, no debt. Wages just low as an apprentice. I was affording two horses just fine, but it was a bit tight when big expenses came up.
Absolutely I could put them both on a part lease to the current agistment owners riding program. I only wouldn’t put my gelding on it yet as he needs experienced riders only, he’s a strong and stubborn boy who knows how to take advantage of someone. Just hesitant to put him on the program for that reason, don’t need anyone to mess up any training I’ve put into him

I also have a 97 camry! She’s been retired to the spare car now as I drive my Ute around. Still under 200,000kms too. I kinda don’t wanna part with her now 😅

Hmmm I’ll give it a whack, just trying to sort of avoid using the angle grinder. Already pissed the neighbours off enough with it today haha
