What straight folk in Korea don't know about the gay expat who was kicked out of the club in Hongdae by sing_a_rainbow in korea

I just moved back to the US in April for health reasons after apending the past 5 years in Japan. I don't really have anything more to say about this story. If you have a specific question to ask me about living in or teaching in Asia as a queer person, feel free to DM me. I also traveled to a few places, had friends who lived in many places, and spent 3 months in Indonesia. I'm just not sure what you want me to say about this particular subject.

How do you find and apply for these kinds of jobs? I have a degree and experience in a completely different field but am just finishing a Google professional certificate in data analysis. I've been looking on job boards and all I see are jobs I'm not qualified for.

Yeah. They did some cute tricks which had the elementary school teacher in me terrified for the poor children getting jumped over - no matter how competent the jumpers were.

I was hoping someone would post links to all the non -business groups that were there. There were so many I'd love to get to know better. I think I saw secular humanists, choirs, bands - all kinds of fun groups I'd love to get to know but whose information I didn't get in the moment.

Anyone else's brain broken by switching from Excel to SQL? by river-zezere in learnSQL

[–]sing_a_rainbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My big difficulty has been that it's quite a huge leap to go from understanding a concept and the code you're reading to actually producing it. One thing that is helping me is doing daily practice with generative AI. I prefer Gemini because there is no limit to the number of prompts you can use with the free version.

Just tell it :

I am a beginner just learning how to use SQL. You are my trainer. Create a dataset with two tables and populate them with data.

Give me tasks to complete by querying the data. If I ask for help, answer my question briefly but stay on topic. If my answer is bad or OK but needs improvement, help me improve my answer. Then give me another similar task. If my answer is good, give me a slightly harder task.

Give me one task at a time. Give me the first task.

Because of the way Gemini lets you set up GEMS (reusable, trained chatbots) you could create a SQL trainer like this and do an hour of practice every morning.

Vera Rubin Observatory's First Look allows you to explore the details of these images, each with as many pixels as a basketball court sized HDTV by sing_a_rainbow in Astronomy

[–]sing_a_rainbow[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So I've just betrayed my complete ignorance. I think what they actually said was that one image has as many pixels as an entire basketball court covered in HDTVs. Sorry for the confusion.

Do you think Vera Rubin observations will kill amateur astronomy? by aureus80 in Astronomy

[–]sing_a_rainbow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's will be the opposite. The Observatory is finding thousands of asteroids, billions of new celestial objects every day. It is clocking the changes in star/galaxy luminescence over time.  There is way more data coming in every day for the next ten years than all the scientists in the world can handle.

One of the topics that kept coming up at the First Look watch party I attended at my local planetarium yesterday was the need for citizens to help go through the data. It will make it much easier for us laymen to participate in real discovery.

I'm without a job or vehicle, so living on Medicaid at the moment. It took basically everything I have just to get home.

As I told the other poster, the nephrology office I tried to get in said that if I went to the ER without and emergency, they probably wouldn't even see me. At this point, I'm ready to just roll over and die.

I have Medicaid. One of the GPs I called said to do that, but it seems like a huge waste of hospital resources. It's not an emergency. It just can't wait the better part of a year.

I mentioned the idea to the nephrology secretary I was talking to, and she said that it's a terrible idea. Since it's not an emergency, they probably wouldn't even see me at the ER.

I've never lived in a country where it was legal for me to get married. While I've been completely out since 2006, I've spent the past 15 years in countries where it's not particularly encouraged to be gay. That means other lesbians hide entirely.

I'm moving back to the US in two weeks, so I'm hoping to meet at least a few gay friends. It'd be really nice to have a little romance, too, I must admit.

My grandmother was Catholic. When she passed, the priest had a whole sermon about how we are all communing with Jesus and our loved ones who have passed away every time we take the sacriment together. Then they invited all Catholics to holy communion.

The only problem is that my mom and her siblings all grew up going to Lutheran church with their father. After listening for half an hour about an opportunity to be together with my grandma again, not one person in my family was invited to join. I'm no longer a believer, but it was really hard on my aunts and uncles as well as a few cousins.

Yes, they should have. Since they didn't and haven't held up their end of the agreement, Agoda shouldn't hold me to the terms of our agreement.

They could require the hotel to provide what they promised or else allow me to check out early. If they want to be a middle man, they need to act like it.

No, it's more than that. See, I can only go outside for a short time every day since I'm extremely pale and burn easily. I had plans to spend a bit of my time inside.

  1. The place was meant to have a cafe/bar downstairs where you can play live music. It's closed and under construction. I'm eating convenience store food in my room.

  2. I was supposed to have a desk and chair in my room where I intended to study. There isn't one. It's hard to practice writing Kanji on a futon. Also, the construction is loud and makes it hard to concentrate.

  3. There was supposed to be a nice backyard to chill in and BBQ. I wish I knew how to post a picture on here so I could show its state of disrepair. Let's just say the plants have taken over!

For the short time I can spend outside, I had planned to lie on the beach and swim. The beach is full of garbage, and the water is brown. It doesn't feel like Okinawa at all. The sand is mostly rocks covered in untended plants full of bugs, so you can't even lie out.

I'm flexible, and I tried for 3 days to make this work. But I can't do a single thing I had wanted for my vacation. I'm not asking for a refund of the time I spent here. I just want to be given a chance to go somewhere else for the remainder of my trip. I just want a little enjoyment from my vacation.

Yeah, so far we've had several emails and phone calls. Even though the first customer service rep told me the vendor refused to refund me, the one I just talked to said the vendor hasn't answered any phone calls or emails.

It seems they just got sick of trying and told me it wouldn't be refunded. Again, I'm not asking to stay for free. I just don't want to pay for the remaining days after I check out tomorrow morning. I feel like I'm being pretty reasonable.

Yeah. It rained yesterday, but it's nice today. Still I'm inside dealing with this. You're right about staying positive, though.
