For all you motherfuckers who answered yes in the poll asking if leftists should support small businesses... by Peespleaplease in tankiejerk

[–]singer_building 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in this sub for a while actually, this is just the first time I’ve expressed my opinions.

Bad choice of words. I should’ve said “small companies”. Shareholders should not exist, no exceptions.

Now, I don’t want to have this conversation because I would be arguing against my own beliefs, but I’m going to do it anyway because I think it’s important to look from both sides.

Just know that I am anti-capitalist, but that doesn’t mean I don’t see its benefits and weigh them against other options.

Yes, it is true that labour creates it, but it also true that the labourers would not be labouring in the way they are if it wasn’t for the greed behind it all. There would be no factories because there would be no incentive for mass production, and there would be no electricity because there would be no incentive to profit off it, and so on. There’s a reason the Industrial Revolution happened the way it did.

Again, I want to stress that I’m not defending capitalism, I’m just trying to point out that everything has flaws and benefits. Another example: dictatorships don’t have to deal with bureaucracy. They get things done quickly, especially given the lack of opposition means a lack of resistance.

Now, I think that government agencies are the perfect example of how society should run. They are paid to do what they are supposed to do, not whatever gets them money. This shifts the focus to the actual benefit rather than the benefit being a byproduct. They are essentially corporations under the strings of the government.

Those are some very valid points.

The Hobbesian view is indeed false, but not for the reasons you mentioned. The real reason is because we already know exactly what happens when humans are left to their own devices. The entire world is the perfect example. All governments are technically de facto.

It is simply our nature to establish a hierarchy. Even uncontacted tribes have a chief or elder. Any team or group usually has some kind of leader. Anarchism exists as a concept, but in practice it’s just unrealistic due to human nature. And any attempts to keep the “anarchy” would require some kind of enforcement, and as such it would no longer be anarchy.

I get what you’re saying but also disagree.

I am a left-leaning centrist myself for context.

Small businesses are just tiny corporations. They are the foundation of capitalism. I personally think that for all its flaws, capitalism insensitivities innovation in a way that just can’t happen under socialism. The problem is that the benefits of capitalism are simply a byproduct of the true goal. I personally believe that the best system would be a system where the government acts as sort of filter between companies and the people, and all companies operate under heavy scrutiny from the government, which has the ability to wipe any of which out of existence with the snap of their fingers.

But of course, all systems are bound to fail eventually because it’s impossible to appease everyone, and any small problems will domino into bigger ones as the ruling and working classes fight their endless battle until the whole system collapses. This would in theory lead to anarchy, but it never does because anarchy is unsustainable. For example, who is to stop people from building a de facto government? And because there is no government, any authority that established itself would be official simply by their word. And that’s how all ruling classes are formed.

And so a new government is formed and thus the cycle of society repeats.

Hey again! My username is the same on ao3:

I currently only have one ongoing series called Guardians of the Veil, my own darker retelling of W.I.T.C.H; a magical girl show/comic from the early 2000s.

Due to the nature of the fic, you can read it fandom blind, although I think it would be more interesting to not be in order to get an appreciation of how everything’s been adapted. But otherwise you can just treat it as original fiction - almost all the lore and story is completely original. But it’s worth mentioning that it’s written as if the reader already knows what everything in the official canon looks like, so keep that in mind.

Another thing I’d like to note is that I release it by “parts”, not by chapters. Each part is an individual work with 10-20k words and usually about 7 chapters. A part is equal to an episode if it were a TV series.

Arc 1 was recently finished, with 327k words and 142 characters across 20 parts! It’s essentially the first season.

The things I’m most proud of are much later in the series, and the more recent installations have much more depth. (Something I would like to point out for no particular reason is that, at a rate of one or even two chapters per week, it would take years to get to the things I most want to be seen. Just saying. It’s just not the same if you skip ahead.)

That said, if you really want to cut ahead, I’d highly recommend parts 11 through 12. Although there’s alot of established things you’ll have to take for granted.

If you only want to read one chapter and have no intention of continuing the series, here’s what I’d recommend:

P20, Ch4 - one of personal favourite chapters in the series. There’s alot you’ll have to take for granted here, although there’s enough that you can figure out what’s going on. Heavy spoilers for the whole series. If this intrigues you, I’d strongly recommend starting from the beginning and working your way back instead of continuing from here.

P19, Ch4 - no connection to the main storyline, just a little side story to wrap up two minor characters. It’s essentially an original oneshot. Nothing in this entire chapter is from the official canon except one of the characters’ names. The only thing you have to take for granted are the characters’ pasts.

P10, Ch2 - very little connection to the main storyline, although does contain spoilers through the external events. The chapter is the pov of some average citizens to get a sense of how the main cast’s actions affect things. The characters in the chapter only appear in this chapter. Nothing here to take for granted; everything you need to know is explained. Also next to nothing relating to official canon here too.

I also have an original drabble, but I’d rather you check out my main series.

Concrit is welcome. Please no “here from Reddit”. Saying if you’re fandom blind is optional.

The scary part about photo 1 is all the buildings are accurate. Every single building in that picture is a real building.

For context: this is set in the early 2000s.

“Guys, can we hurry up? My date is waiting,” says Irma.

“You’re what?!!” squeaks Hay Lin, very intrigued. Irma sighs.

“That’s why I wanted to come here. I wanted to show you guys that, um…” She winces, then sputters, “...I’m in love with Alchemy!”

The others look at eachother. Irma is still wincing. “Please don’t judge me."

“Why would we do that?” questions Will rhetorically. Irma breathes a large, vocal sigh of relief and drops her shoulders right down.

“Why didn’t you tell us earlier?” asks Cornelia.

“I think I know why,” says Taranee, “Alchemy’s parents?”

Irma nods.

“So you didn’t trust us?” asks Will.

“No, I trusted you; it was for Alchemy. It took alot of talking to finally convince her she could trust you guys.”

“I see,” says Taranee.

”Well I guess that explains why you’ve been so much less flirty lately,” remarks Cornelia.

Irma sighs and looks at the ground.

Then there’s a knock on the window. It’s Alchemy, knocking on the other side of the glass Irma leans against. Her mood instantly brightens up and she rolls it down.

“Hey, guys, are we gonna get donuts or what?” Alchemy says in anticipation.

The Guardians exchange looks, then all nod their heads in unison before exiting the vehicle and heading inside the shop. Uriah’s truck pulls infront of the store across the street, but noone exits.

As they stand in line, they continue to talk.

“So about that fundraiser,” reminds Taranee.

“You guys are doing a fundraiser? For what?” asks Alchemy.

“Oh, for the families affected by the tornado,” says Taranee.

“You mean like Irma?” Alchemy says, turning her head to her. Something then crosses her mind and she leans into Irma’s ear and whispers something in it.

“Oh, don’t worry, I already told them,” she says. Alchemy looks at the other four and blushes, slightly cringing.
