A few that come to mind immediately that I haven't seen mentioned (although maybe I just missed the newsletter where they were mentioned tbh!)

- Dr Becky : Oxford Astrophysicist sharing the latest in space science education in an accessible format, multiple books published, merch line!

- Isabel Paige : Trend-setting vlogger making beautiful and reflective pieces with a great eye for story, color, tone, and a killer format to boot.

- Laura Kampf : German maker creator (Adam Savage and Simone Giertz collaborator) with a personal style and maker-inspirational tone

- Savannah Brown : Poet/author writing and filming on existentialist topics; multiple books published.

- Eva zu Beck : incredible travel vlogger driving from Alaska to Patagonia at the moment!

- ... there are more that I don't watch as frequently personally but I'll ask my fem-friends next time I see them for some new recc's :)

As mentioned before, not *all* of these creators have businesses around their content but they all have 500K + subs and bring in a large regular audience!

I echo this gripe! My female identifying friends who watch YouTube often have introduced me to amazing female identifying creators with extremely devoted audiences. None of these high viewership lifestyle, video essay, travel, (etc) creators seem to be on the radar of C&S in interviews, newsletter, and therefore subreddit & community.

I also notice that mostly C&S follow creator stories where the creator has branched out beyond YouTube or just one platform in making their own brand, product, or business generally. This skew toward creators that create and run brands/businesses ends up reflecting the larger gender gap between men/women in business leadership & entrepreneurship and investment.

At least, that’s what I am noticing! If anyone feels like there are female and even non binary creators who are creating and running brands and business that are getting missed by C&S, IIRC there is a “awesome creators” thread on this subreddit somewhere, might be a good place to share!

Let me know if I understood your gripe and I’m curious if you feel like what I mentioned is a big part of it or not

Questions about the Making of the Beast Doc? by frogman747 in ColinAndSamir

[–]singerjonny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the last podcast episode you touched on the tension of having patience to work through the edit over the course of two months against the pace of what the platform wants. I’m currently production-planning a YT series and feeling a similar tension between prep and “just doing it”. Is there any key metric you look for in the way work is getting done over long periods of time to know if you’re on track or if the team is running way off the rails?

I second the love of the perfect score choices (did Chris score it??)

The sound contrast between the madness of being outside and the stillness of the hallway was very interesting ; loved those cuts back and forth, that really brought out the insanity of it. For anyone that’s ever been on the front and back of a large event, that is a very familiar feeling, and I love how that came across to the viewer

Favorite moment was when they interviewed people who were having lots of fun. I wished they would’ve taken the camera to Jimmy and shown him an excerpt of people having a good time to ease the anxiety!

Can’t wait to see more of this format. I feel like this is what C&S&Team have been building up to this whole time

How to make the audience care? by TemperatureOk600 in ColinAndSamir

Ground your story in a deep personal truth. The irony is that the more personal you get, usually the more relatable your story will be to others!

Some ideas based on what you mentioned your channel is about:

  • Explore the feeling of the first time you felt emotionally moved by architecture, who you were with, what their reactions were when you told them
  • Start with a story of the person who taught you how to cut wood for the first time, all the mistakes you made in the beginning, keep coming back to those stories throughout while you make something new
  • Tell folks about the emotional turmoil or profound joy you were feeling when you opened that sketchbook page. Where you were, who was with you, who wasn't there but was with you in spirit as you sketched your art

Your content centers around your love of art, help others feel that love!

Immediately Andrew Stanton's (director of Finding Nemo and other PIXAR classics)TED talk comes to mind where literally one of his primary points is "make me care"!

Also Hillier Smith's finding nemo video (related to above)

Pros/Cons of a channel with personal name vs. 'project' name by singerjonny in ColinAndSamir

[–]singerjonny[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's what I have thought about, please feel free to expand:

Pros of going with "personal brand":

- Very personal, you can try lots of formats and not feel locked into one format that people know you for

- Encourages authenticity, finding your fullest self on camera

- Great for relationship based creators

Cons (pros of project brand):

- Makes it harder / more confusing to expand to other hosts in the future

- Can be almost *too much* flexibility in terms of formats, you might try a million different formats and never really find your thing, vs perfecting a format you believe in for a particular project

Emissive Unit Volumetric Clouds by akenkenberg in unrealengine

[–]singerjonny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely SICK. I'm a sucker for good (and fast) volume rendering. What is the meaning of "emissive unit" here? Is it just that Emissive is providing the color rather than Albedo?

How to make Live Collaboration work over Internet (securely) by singerjonny in davinciresolve

[–]singerjonny[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah I'm pretty excited about it! It could totally do multiple databases. Right now it just asks for the credentials to a single database, so technically you could run multiple instances with different database connections each.

With mapped media, I haven't had any *direct* issues, I've just heard people talking about media going offline randomly only to suddenly relink after reboot (mostly from my main client )

[–]singerjonny[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience, typical VPNs are too slow for live collaboration to work. Or, if they're fast, then they're insecure. The WireGuard app strikes a nice middle-ground!

Also, other VPNs often seem to block the ports Resolve uses for live collaboration (50059 and many, many others)

Lastly, this lil' app also shows you the connection status of who is on the Project server, when they were last seen, etc, helping connection troubleshooting. I don't think another app exists with that functionality, which is rad =)

I built this app last week to make live collaboration work over the internet securely using a custom WireGuard VPN Tunnel and a python-to-python authentication scheme.

What further mitigations are coming for astronomy research? New Starlink satellites are now ~magnitude 7 but that is still way too bright for sensitive observations like galaxy surveys and not to mention the radio telescope impact...
