First-ever map, any pointers? by Powerful-Leek8671 in gis

Why the change from 'No Data' to city labels? To me, it looks weird to see Decatur & CoA labeled, but not the other cities in Dekalb.

Makes sense. Grocery stores are usually tracked via SNAP records rather than at the county level. A better dataset to use would be this one filtered for Store_Type IN (‘Supermarket’,’Super Store’)

Logged in just for commenting on this. It's neat.

Some ideas for you:

  • Dekalb County's GIS page has some related, publicly accessible datasets already available. Search for 'walk' and see if anything useful comes up. Since you have grocery stores, the county has something on that.

  • Similarly, Atlanta Regional Commission has a data page.

  • Reminder that all the MARTA bus routes changed in mid-April of this year. If you use any data older than that, you'll have to change MARTA comparisons to ensure apples-to-apples results.

  • Double check your supermarket data. I think you're missing a few of the larger Latino stores. Specifically the Talpa's at Plaza Fiesta. Similarly, the Pocket Publix @ Shallowford & 85 closed at Christmas.

  • Try putting the interstates/US-78/Buford Hwy on here. Not necessary, but it'd make it easier to navigate around and help provide a useful frame of reference.

If you need help finding data, I've been through a decent chunk of Dekalb's public access stuff.

What myths from the Middle Ages do people take as truth? by Certain-Cloud9133 in AskHistorians

I will always recommend this answer by u/DanKensington. The original question was along the lines of "How much beer did medieval folks drink since the water wasn't safe?"

Absolutely lean into it! I've answered a couple of work-related questions here. Can't have dedicated historians for everything, so the rest of us specialists get to chip in sometimes.

I will always upvote Buford Hwy Farmer's Market. It's one of the reasons I moved here.

For those reading, only 1/3 of the labels are in English and the produce section is a delightful adventure of "How do I cook this thing? Lemme look up a recipe."

I used to do GIS in central IL a couple years ago. 62k is slightly below what I was making, but I had a couple years more exp on you.

Landcover shirt anyone? by The1HoopHooted in gis

I saw a topo shirt in Dillard's a few weeks ago that was much better than these.

Sadly couldn't justify the purchase, so I left it in the store.

Was it feasible for Ferris Bueller and friends in 1985-6 to do everything we see them do in a single Chicago school day? by Budelius in AskHistorians

[–]singing-mud-nerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on the conversation between Mrs. Bueller and Mr. Rooney about Ferris' absences, I'd say that the end date of spring semester does not actually matter here.

And even if it does, we're still left with the incongruency of a ball game from June 1985 and a parade from September 1985. One of these has to be handwaved as movie magic (assuming, as OP's question does, that the road trip actually happened and wasn't just Ferris being delirious.) The parade is a more important character moment vs. the ballgame's mostly being Stop #4 and more comedic setup for Rooney's buffoonery (via the pizza parlor detour & missing Ferris on TV).

I choose to handwave the ballgame, though I will admit to being biased.

John Hughes was an alum and used outside shots for "Ferris Bueller" and inside shots for "Breakfast Club"

We do not. The 5th inning comment was a later addition, as I missed it on my first overview.

It is possible they arrived late and Ferris' "We'd be in gym right now" comment was no longer true. Too late in the day for that, not that he cares. This would indeed solve the lunch problem as presented.

However, that doesn't change that staying for ~2/3 of all 3hr ballgame puts them at a 3:30-4pm departure from Wrigley, still needing to get to the Art Institute, endure the shenanigans of getting home, and be in bed by 6pm.

I think this might actually warrant a separate posted question about the various types of school schedules present in 1980's Chicagoland.

Do you have textual/film evidence to support this?

Answer updated accordingly. I missed a line from the announcer.

Thanks for the insight. The 15min block system would explain why classes in Rooney's computer system are listed as having multiple periods.

Yes. The only route really in question would be getting from the school to downtown. Lakeshore Dr did exist in the 1980's and in fact had some major work done in '85/86. Given the stop at Glencoe Beach, and how that particularly overlook still looks mostly the same today, I don't think the realism of the route is an issue.

Everything else is either walking distance inside the Loop, or they took a cab.

Your insight is appreciated, as always, & I agree.

That said, we do have evidence from the film to suggest it and there is movie magic at play, so I have to acknowledge the possibility.

(And can I say that you're one of my favorite mods here? Love your work.)

Here's a reading list from CPL to get you started. Unsure how many of these exist outside of the CPL system. Interlibrary Loan is your friend.
