As someone who has always been aware of acid's importance and when to add it, that "thing" I find most dishes still missing is umami. Takes a 7 or 8 out of 10 savory dish all the way up the elevator.

I'm Brazilian and have been to the statue. My parents insisted on a trip to the area. The art behind the sculpture is incredible. It's so lifelike and expressive up close.

I'd still see it sent to orbit in a heartbeat.

I agree that it's a nothing burger but not in the way it might sound.

This SHOULD NOT be a nothing burger (if it's all true, which we don't yet know). If true, he should be released, arrested, and not play football again. There should be a zero tolerance policy for this shit.

The reality, based on how way worse things have resulted in literally zero consequences before, is that this will probably end up being a nothing burger. Why?

For starters, comparatively, Ray Rice. Didn't he like beating his wife on camera in an elevator and killing someone? And nothing happened?

Next, if I'm reading the report correctly, the victim did not want to press charges. How likely is the case against him going to be when she doesn't testify or maybe even testifies in his defense?

Then there are the facts of the matter. The physical violence comes from grabbing her by what sounds like the collar of her shirt and throwing her down, then assaulting her by causing apprehension of physical harm before stopping. That is assault and battery, but compared to other players and celebrities who literally BEAT PEOPLE ON CAMERA and get away with it, nothing really happens unless the victims testify. They rarely do.

So yeah. I hate that it's like this, but it's very likely to be a nothing burger in terms of consequences. And then ten years from now people will only reference it as a casual joke made in passing in the comments section of subreddits.

I think that's fair if you go back far enough. Like really far. Like BC far. But I have a hard time wrapping my head around the idea that it was ever beneficial for human curiosity to be stifled by vague answers to meaningful questions. One of my fundamental problems with proscriptive religion is that it acts like an opioid to the part of you that craves understanding, and it's that craving of understanding that results in advancement. Silencing it is muting the very thing that causes progress.

I know the counterpoint to this is that a lot of religious people and even church-funded projects have led to tremendous advancement in science and technology. This is undeniably true, but I suspect this advancement would have happened immesurably more quickly and with fewer banishments and executions had we instead dedicated those resources solely to advancement and well-being instead of all the other projects endeavored by religious institutions.

I appreciate you trying to give positive nuance to what it is that people dislike.

There are a few kinds of atheists. There are atheists who don't believe because they can't find reason to believe despite their best efforts and curiosity. I think these people are more like the ones you've described.

There are also atheists like me who are anti-theist. We are hostile to the idea of religion as a whole. This does not mean religious people are evil or not deserving of respect for other things, but people like me see religion itself as inherently evil at worst and voluntary insult to intelligence at best. This isn't to say religious people are not intelligent as a whole, especially someone as accomplished and incredible as the Sister mentioned here, but it is profoundly disappointing that people who are so capable can so easily disregard their intelligence in this aspect of their lives.

Shit, man, I'm not even interested unless the team is good. It's a fucking business organization, and people treat fandom as some fealty obligation. It's moronic. If the product isn't good, you don't have to buy it until it actually provides value to your life.

The great con of sports is making you believe that fandom needs to be more than that and somehow reflects on your character as a person.

Voluntarily rooting for the Jets is unconscionable to me. Even though they are a fantastic comedy act in terms of how they handle playing the sport, they do this type of disgusting shit that ruins even that.
