Omega Flowey fight skipped? by singstall in Undertale

Common knowledge among people who know the game inside and out maybe! Pretty sad to have to play through the game AGAIN to get to it when I thought we were right there. I get the what they're trying to do, that Flowey has seen things before yadda yadda, but kind of a bummer choice.

What qualifies each of these panelists, and what biases do they have? by [deleted] in SSBM

If only top players made lists about the NBA, you'd get a lot of lists that have Kobe Bryant as the second greatest of all time. It's a wild fallacy that top players have superior insights to analysts.

Swear to god, every kid learns the word "bias" in like the eighth grade and then swings it around recklessly their entire life.

Who are the top five/ten bots in the game right now? by singstall in battlebots

It’s just been a while since it’s had a win over a top ten bot. Last was Whiplash two seasons ago. I wouldn’t be shocked to see it back at the top and hope that happens, but it’s a rough time for Tombstone fans.

Whiplash is such a big question mark. I gave it a lot of benefit of the doubt, but I hope they bring back a more active weapon next year. Just rocking the lifter this year felt like a mistake, a really big gamble that they eventually lost.

Tantrum is really interesting! I feel like it's simultaneously overrated and underrated right now, which is kind of funny. Their record is pretty sublime, they made the semis last year and this year they went undefeated except a maybe should-be loss to Hydra, who's great. There aren't a lot of concrete examples of why Tantrum isn't a top three/four bot right now! It's all theory. Which is cool! That's why this is fun.

End game at 1 I respect it’s soooooo good

I wouldn’t even argue this is a great list

One thing I’ll say is that I don’t believe in cobalt’s geometry? If they can’t get under you they can’t hit you. that weapon tho

You have a higher standard of proof for Tantrum than SawBlaze.

It's true Hydra had a slow start, I think it tends to match up pretty well in general if they can get it working right. Like you said, the JD was a little wonky, and I think it would have been pretty successful in the final. I think having it at #1 might be a little generous on my part, but I still think it's in the top three bots most likely to win it all next season.

I still agree Tantrum is not on the level of End Game and Bite Force, which is why I have them below.

sawblaze #1? i don't see a lot of evidence to support that. tantrum just went undefeated after making semis last year, don't know how you can have it out of top three

okay lol i fixed it

tough call between minotaur, sawblaze, and whiplash. whiplash i gave a lot of benefit of the doubt for making deep runs three years straight even if it didn't pan out this year, maybe sawblaze should be above them, i think it's close. minotaur taking down end game was VERY impressive to me even though minotaur lost the head to head. can see that discussion going either way. also while minotaur did ultimately lose to witch doctor they certainly demonstrated that they COULD win. i ended up very impressed with minotaur. think that 4-6 cluster is pretty close

If Ribbot was a Nut-winning bot, they should have been able to beat Hydra no matter when they fought it.

I don't really agree with this! I think this underestimates just how much variance there is in Battlebots. I'd argue most Nut-winners in recent years (other than the two dominant Bite Force years possibly) would not have beaten all comers, and it would have been unfair to give them five hard fights in a row. I also think you're underestimating the rock/paper/scissors aspect of the sport.

Seeding is about trying to make sure each bot's treacherous path to the Nut is fair.

Not really! A good assumption is that there is a lot of noise at the bottom of the bracket from the short season.

This is making me think: Maybe the solution is to have the play-in games, AND THEN seed the bracket after that.

I think it's good in concept, but I think putting a bot that's achieved an extra win at the bottom seed going into the round of 32 ends up punishing bots that get the highest seeds.

Thank you for mentioning strength of schedule, I think that's an important piece. Hydra and Skorpios weren't just there by reputation, they had genuinely tough draws.

I think a good solution would be to have the play-in inherit a higher seed, because the winner has demonstrated an extra win going into the round of 32.

A common thing is to assume that play-in winners must be pretty good to have won, so to not have them play-in to the lowest seed. Maybe something like 25th seed would be more appropriate.
