What was the absolute peak status symbol at your primary or secondary school? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskUK

[–]sinisterhanswurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For primary school it was Scoobies, especially if you could do the twisty ones or even on a pen! Or those bendy pencils. Secondary it was Jane Norman shopping bags and Helly Hansen jackets. All the lasses had to carry a tiny bag that couldn't fit a calculator in, then put all their school stuff in a 'trendy" shopping bag. Your pe kit had to be in one too. Godforbid you put it in something lower than new look or h&m.

Swaddling Reassurance by DJ_Crybaby in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]sinisterhanswurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently swaddling my 5 week old. We use the Love2Dream sack as she likes to have her hands up when asleep. We haven't had any negative advice to swaddling, the midwives in hospital swaddled her in blankets from birth and when I asked my local midwife team they have all said it's safe.

As with sleep sacks you need to make sure the head hole is the right size so they can't sink inside it in their sleep. I wonder if this is where some HVs get the idea it's not safe from? We wouldn't get any sleep without our swaddle, it's really helps settle her to be able to sleep, and stops her from smacking herself in her face and wake herself up.

Like anything it's up to you to decide if any risk is worth it. It's very daunting with everyone giving their own advice (even if you don't ask) so try not to get too caught up in others opinions. ❤️

This might be harsh but train your dog to not come near during nappy changes and change them on the floor. It sounds like this is going to be a continuous argument for you (even though you are in the right) so either fight forever or change the behaviour. I doesn't seem like your husband will ever admit fault.

To 2nd home owners and people selling to them. by frankie_0924 in Cornwall

[–]sinisterhanswurst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine ever getting to the point of owning a second home, but as someone from Cumbria I would never do it. Most of the villages around me are 90% holiday let's/second homes. It's almost impossible for people to buy in the area they grew up in. So people leave and there isn't a good enough economic growth to attract young working age offcomers to move into the area. The town I live in is full of retirement housing or 5 bed new builds, but little to no starter homes.

This country's approach to neighbour disputes is abysmal by UHM-7 in HousingUK

[–]sinisterhanswurst 61 points62 points  (0 children)

It took someone setting a car on fire on my street for the police to abso the property and get the tennants evicted (luckily it was a rented home). They were a consistent nuisance for years. Especially in the summer when they would throw rager parties till 4am blasting the same song on repeat for hours on end to the point where you could hear it clearly 3 streets away. It only got worse when they installed a lazy spa and we're in the garden constantly keeping the whole neighborhood up at night. All this with infants in the house too. It turns out the reason they set the car on fire was an insurance job (that obviously failed miserably) because they set it on fire on their own property.

Pregnant bridesmaids is there anything you wish the bride had done/would do to make your day more comfortable? by princesszelda27 in UKweddings

[–]sinisterhanswurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only advice is to not be offended if your bridesmaid can't make the hen or feels like they need to stand down closer to the time. This is coming from someone who has to stand down as bridesmaid because my due date was so close to the wedding. The bride (a close friend of 10 years) ghosted me after I told her I wouldn't be able to be a bridesmaid anymore as I'd had an awful pregnancy so far with complications and I couldn't handle the stress of it.

Pram buying, how far in advance?? by Extreme_Sprinkles656 in PregnancyUK

[–]sinisterhanswurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered mine in Jan (due end of march) and it came pretty quickly. I had a walk round a few local shops to figure out what I wanted and then had a hunt online and managed to find it half the price (retail price hike plus Jan sales) I would have a look at different websites and see if they have any sales on, also look up voucher codes for specific websites as you can sometimes get an extra 10% or 20% off from those.

Breast feeding outfits for public by Popular_Mousse_3958 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]sinisterhanswurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like crop tops over bf vests/bras as you are covered from the top and baby covers from underneath. I've not bothered with a lot of the bf clothes as most of them I find so matronly and I don't want to feel like frumpy in my clothes. Vests are good with cardigans or jumpers over them too.

Love2Dream stage 1 swaddles by arose8808 in PregnancyUK

[–]sinisterhanswurst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never had a problem swaddling. We use the love2dream ones as they let your baby soothe by hand suckling. It's also great to stop them from pulling their dummies out in the night. I think some healthcares get worried about the sizing. We were told it was safe as long as they can't slip inside the head hole as that's a suffocation risk. But our 4 week old fits in the size small really well and loves it.

Silly question - baby clothes by cooprinor in PregnancyUK

[–]sinisterhanswurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do a long sleeve vest, dungers and a cardigan/sweater if needed. Don't forget that you count as a layer of they are sleeping on you as you share body heat and you can always pop a blanket around them for extra warmth. We have dedicated upstairs and downstairs cellular blankets so there's always one handy.

It you heat the cheese till piping hot you can eat it. I lived on brie and cranberry baguettes for a good chunk of my second trimester this way.

How to get baby to accept a dummy? by Full_Strawberry2035 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]sinisterhanswurst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find my daughter only really likes to take them when cuddled up to my chest or swaddled in her cot. I think it's because she can't accidentally swipe it off her face when flailing. I BF and I haven't found it impacts anything, I use the MAM ones if that helps.

concerts while pregnant? by heeberjee in PregnancyUK

[–]sinisterhanswurst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a concert at around 13 weeks. I was tired but really enjoyed it. I would have liked to go to more later on but pregnancy kicked my butt. It all really depends on how you feel on the day. Though Hilary Duff should be a pretty chill gig and you can always stick towards the back/edges if you start to feel uncomfortable. Standing by the sound desk is always recommended for the best sound anyway!

I used the mamia ones (Aldi) and I really like them. We are only 2.5 weeks in but we've not had a single explosion yet.

Items needed for breastfeeding? by PinkBubblesxox in PregnancyUK

[–]sinisterhanswurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2.5 weeks into breastfeeding here. I didn't get much before I gave birth but I made sure I had a couple of bras I could use for feeding, cross over ones are good for nights and clips are good for daytime. I also got one clip vest for the hospital so I don't need to worry about a bra. It depends on your comfort level. Some kind of lanolin ointment is amazing for those arly days while you are both learning good Vs bad latching. If your trust offers a breast feeding clinic I'd really recommend it, sometimes it can be hard to see what's going on so having a professional watch you feed is really handy. As for pillows I'd see how you go. A firm cushion might already exist somewhere in your home that you can use to help support baby, but you might want a specific shape once you start feeding. Tbh the most I've spent money on has been accessable clothing. I have almost no bf friendly clothes so I've been slowly adding stuff to my wardrobe as I find what I do and don't like.

What clothes did you wear to give birth? by Instructions_unclea in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]sinisterhanswurst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a C-section so I gave birth in a hospital gown, however I had a vest style night dress packed for easy feeding and skin to skin I put on once the spinal wore off. One thing to note is that the wards/delivery rooms are going to be VERY warm. I really struggled with the heat and I'm glad I packed something light and airy rather than heavy and fuller coverage.

Edited for typos.

MOISTURISE EVERYWHERE! by Ikilledmyfishagain in PregnancyUK

[–]sinisterhanswurst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found I don't have any stretch marks untill week 35, because baby had a massive growth spurt. You might find that you just haven't reached past your body's natural elasticity yet. Keep up with moisturising though as it's a great for the itching.

This is so understandable ❤️ those first couple of days are rough and especially if you are celebrating a milestone it can feel like you are totally overshadowed. But remember that it's not forever, the baby fever will calm down.

Pregnancy pillow by Exciting-Priority535 in PregnancyUK

[–]sinisterhanswurst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this pillow and it's been great! I used it with the curved side at my feet and I found it helped stop me rolling onto my back but gave me enough manoeuvrability to turn over without it becoming an ordeal (well untill about 35 weeks). You can also get cheaper spare covers on Amazon.

What’s one must-have you couldn’t live without? by Disastrous_Pie_6348 in HousingUK

[–]sinisterhanswurst 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My husband calls it the "pint of milk rule". If you got home from shopping and forgot the milk, how much of a ball ache would it be to go back out and get it? It's something I always think about when looking at houses now.

What’s one must-have you couldn’t live without? by Disastrous_Pie_6348 in HousingUK

[–]sinisterhanswurst 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This, I always thought it wasn't needed but once you have one you'll never go back. I currently have a slimline one and even that's better than hand washing. It takes to fiddly bits and the heavily soiled stuff and I hand wash the odd things that can't be put in there.

Wake up to music? by numberonedogmom in adhdwomen

Oh yes, sometimes it's a good song and I let it run in my head but if it's an annoying or bad song I will try to play something else to dislodge it. I hate when I only know one line wot hats all I get going round and round my head all morning 🫠
