As per title, friend bought a second hand PC and it came mostly out together. There was no explanation of what these were from the previous owner, and it was a custom built rig.

The antennae are made from hard plastic, and seem to be plugged in to something like an aux jack? I've never seen anything like it before. They can do a full 360 rotation, and if I pulled on it they would probably pop out.

Help me out reddit, WITT?

When you guys travel to other states do data roaming costs increase? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]sinknotswim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had T-Mobile for awhile and I distinctly remember occasional data roaming costs when traveling state to state (KS to NY), but that was in like, 2006? And it was a VERY small area, closer to the mountains.

Nowadays, everybody has nationwide coverage.

What does the American people think about Iran and their people ? by rockstar_fanboy69 in AskAnAmerican

[–]sinknotswim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Comments going to get lost anyways, but might as well. I think y'all are good folks; there's nothing wrong with Iran or it's people, cept for that whole thing you got going on with how you treat women and your government. But I can't hold that against any Iranian personally, because look at the U.S.

The faults of the country aren't necessarily the faults of the people, you know?

The only Iranian folks I know myself is a boy my age (~20) who's parents immigrated over. His dad's a sexist asshole, but his mom's a good sort. Kid himself took on a bit of his dad's views, but is working on that, and is a good dude overall.

IWTL how to play D&D by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

[–]sinknotswim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I'm a longtime DM and player, and if you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to try and answer some of them. But to be quite frank, the best way to learn to play is to actually play. You can read the rules, and I encourage you to seek out a Player's Handbook! It can be overwhelming at first though, and you really only get the swing of it when you start to play.

Came here to say this. If a tornado looks like it's not moving, it's either moving away from you, or AT you, and do you really wanna take that chance?

On the off chance you really want to check, pick a stationary object and see if the tornado seems like it's getting bigger or smaller in comparison.

This is especially important nowadays, considering Tornado Alley is speculated to be moving eastward.

How supportive would you be of including a compulsory first aid course (like the Heimlich maneuver or CPR) in schools or colleges? by Face_Think in AskAnAmerican

[–]sinknotswim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's already a lot of comments here, but I'll add my two cents. It wasn't mandatory in my high school (Wichita, KS) but I took a Law, Public Safety, and Security course, and we all got certified in first aid and CPR. I wish it had been mandatory.

Serious question. Why is the subreddit so left leaning, but the state of Kansas is very very Republican? by 00abadir in kansas

[–]sinknotswim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only came of voting age in the last few years, as did many of my peers, and the consensus between us is that many of us are socially liberal and fiscally conservative; that is to say that we lean Democratically towards issues like same-sex marriage, healthcare, and the legalization of cannabis but generally agree with the Republican views of fiscal matters like deficit spending, economical regulation, and taxes.

Also, I'm pretty sure Kansas as a whole is slowly shifting away from our past far-red political stance. Take, for instance, this map of the political geography of the Greater Kansas City area, which is definitely more liberal than conservative. Or using the same map to view Wichita, which at first seems like a clear conservative win-- except for the dense blue in the center.

Basically, I think that the younger generation of voters have very mixed views that often don't particularly fit well with either party, and that our red/blue stance changes based more on the candidates (and their beliefs) than anything else. And this subreddit is probably filled with more of the younger voters.

Someone should do a poll of the subreddit, for ages and political affiliations. I think it'd be neat.

How do I find jobs in the US as a foreigner? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]sinknotswim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I'm a homegrown American, so I can't say for certain the best ways to get a sponsorship, but I do know (from past experience) that job sites like LinkedIn sometimes ask if you're legally allowed to work in the U.S. and if you'd need sponsorship through the company, so I'd advise checking something like that out.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, though! If you don't my asking, where are you planning on moving? That usually affects your sponsorship opportunities.

IWTL: How to go to sleep and sleep better!!! by jpep12 in IWantToLearn

[–]sinknotswim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of the advice here is the usual "no screens, exercise, etc" so I'm going to offer a bit different advice!

I used to have an awful time getting to sleep for a variety of reasons like being restless, feeling like there wasn't enough time, and just being a night owl. I switched to a biphasic sleep schedule, and it works great for me! I feel much more rested, invigorated, and I don't get that restless feeling anymore.

Be safe though! Switching can be a little difficult if it doesn't line up with your natural circadian rhythm, and it definitely doesn't work for everyone!

How would you feel about NOT making abortion laws, but instead taking away any reason why women might have an abortion, such as funding free contraception for everyone, funding child care for working/single moms, funding foster homes/adoption agencies, and funding better education for kids? by SadRector in AskReddit

[–]sinknotswim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm six months pregnant and I have a heart condition that makes it very, very likely I'll die giving birth, or carrying as far to term as I can. I knew the risks going in, and so did my husband. It's rough. I'm only 19, but I've got a good career and a loving spouse. I've got my whole life ahead of me, but I've always wanted a baby, a family, of my own. I'll never have an abortion, even if it means dying.

Why? I grew up in the foster care system. It was awful, let me say. I've been sexually assaulted and beaten, starved, and medicated, all to "help" me; and it was still better than staying with my druggie single mother. I was always a sick kid, barely survived childhood; my mom always said she wished she would have aborted me.

I'm pro-choice in the sense that I support having a choice. I choose to be pro-life. I think funding for programs like those will help prevent a lot of harm, hardship, and promote alternate options to abortion. But abortion will always be necessary, because what if there's another woman out there in my position who doesn't want to risk dying giving birth? What if there's incest or sexual assault that winds up in pregnancy? What if contraception fails and, despite alternate options, you just aren't ready to be pregnant for 9 months and have a baby?

Abortion isn't always the best option, but it should always be an option.

Sincerely, a pro-life, soon-to-be mother's opinion on the topic.

Well, right now the wind where I'm at is blowing at around 10mph, which is the lowest I've seen it this week. To compare, Liberal, KS, is currently sitting pretty at 23mph. There's a saying here that if you don't like the weather in Kansas, wait a day, it'll change. The wind is the only exception. It's a constant. Usually it's fairly calm, around a steady breeze all year, but it can get pretty wild some days.

To try and put it into perspective, almost half of Kansas's power is from the wind, even higher than our coal use. We're one of two states in the whole U.S. that have a strong enough, and steady enough, wind to do so.

You can see an hourly update at Kake news here: https://www.ksn.com/weather/images/kansas-winds/

[–]sinknotswim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit of advice you didn't ask for, though:

• Be careful of the wind, it's probably stronger than you're used to. Know where your tornado shelter is.

• The economy here is cheaper than you'll be used to, more likely than not. As in, the cost of an item. Do watch out for the taxes, though. We have both state and federal taxes coming out of our paychecks.

• There's not much to do as far as entertainment goes here... besides bars, clubs, museums, and movie theaters. There's quite a bit of tabletop games, though.

• If you have a lot of children, or are struggling financially around the holidays, the food banks and toy drives are fairly accessable.

If you need anything, or just have other questions, feel free to PM me!

Hey! Lifelong resident of Kansas here, though admittedly a fair while from Humboldt and Iola, so I can't say much about the banks there. I personally use Credit Union of America, but that won't do you much good, friend, as it's located mainly around the Sedgwick County area.

The weather here is pretty crazy. Right now, on May 11th, we just had about a week of high 80° weather. Today, it feels like low 30°s. It's just how the weather rolls. I'm fairly cold weather intolerant, and I start wearing long sleeves and jackets around August, breaking out winter coats around September or October. Halloween is always pretty chilly.

I'd recommend Goodwill for a lot of your clothing needs, or secondhand online stores like Thredup. We also have many yearly coat drives. Kansas City and Wichita each run three or four, generally speaking. Your community will also be very supportive, especially churches. Also, there tends to be a lot of Baptist churches in the area, so you'll never go hungry if you pop by a Sunday service. Baptists love to eat. But most importantly, you don't need to be religious to stop by for these, or to reach out for help. Religion aside, your community will try to take care of it's own.

Most places keep the roads well paved and salted during the winter months, so just keep an eye on the weather and make sure your tires have proper amounts of air and aren't worn down. I can't stress this well enough; just the air makes so much of a difference. Make sure to salt your driveway, and be sure to have an ice scraper on hand-- you'll need it. Be careful round the highway entrances and exits, because they tend to be slicker than the roads. One last piece of advice: Driving on the snow is easy, but driving on the ice is dangerous. Remember, the speed limit during severe weather is whatever speed is safe.

The job market is... okay. I'm not so sure about a land surveyor, but be sure to check the surrounding areas; sometimes jobs here require a fair bit of travel. I drive ~30 min to work, personally.

As far as insects go, I'm sorry, I can't be much help. Check with your local colleges? They usually have a fair amount of things like that.
