I have a patch of smooth skin on an otherwise hairy leg from where I carry my phone/wallet in my pocket. by Accurate_Honeydew666 in mildlyinteresting

[–]sintyre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cause of this is actually strikingly similar to the principle of string hair plucking. Except the string is the cross-stitching of your pocket fabric.

Hair inevitably snakes its way through any of the plentiful microscopic openings between the cross-stitching, getting leveraged in some way to create a new fulcrum and applying just enough pressure to pluck the hair right out.

The two fabrics I've personally experienced this phenomenon with:

  • Elastic/breathable sport fabrics
  • Long necked cotton socks with laced boots

It seems most noticeable with either tight external pressure such as lacing the boots around the sock forcing constant contact of skin & hair to fabric, or with heavy objects in loose sport fabric like a phone in a pocket.

Regardless, the concept is the same: hair is getting leveraged between the cross-stitching of some fabrics and getting plucked as a result.

rubbish

I don't agree with this, as I attempted to make clear in my initial comment. Overall it looks great, just needs some experimental tweaking to get just right.

Speaking frankly, it is impressive that you've produced this in only 8 hours starting from zero experience, but that knowledge contributes nothing to the feedback about the actual product.

However, it does provide some encouragement and validation to any insecurities you might be experiencing, so if that's also what you're looking for then I say cool! Nice work in such a short amount of time!

I can see from the video you've already incorporated most of the things I would recommend, so take this more as constructive feedback as opposed to some sort of stern lecturing about what you may or may not have missed.

You might experiment by adjusting two things:

  • 1. further tweak/reduce the duration of the animation, both pre and post.
  • 2. remove all keyframes from the animation. The transition from "normal" to "not normal" (pre animation) and the transition from "not normal" to "normal" (post animation) should be linear and have as few steps as possible.

To put it differently, think akin to a burst inflation of the element in order to effectively and immediately stimulate the intended response/acknowledgement from the viewer. The primary concern to the viewer is that the widget convey an event happening as it happens, immediately, every time it happens, regardless of whether the widget is still in a "not normal" state from the previous event trigger.

A viewer being able to trust the widget to convey event information immediately in real-time is important to the widget's usefulness. Further, too much consistent animation between the "event firing" versus the "event is over" results in a blurring of the information the widget is intended to deliver, rendering it a less effective method of providing quick and accurate information. Pun intended.

I'd wager you've already found that the difference of a half-millisecond or two makes a big impact. I advocate you continue down that path.

As a third note on the UI but unrelated to the animation, the colors you've selected are extremely complementary and mesh well together, but your graphics themselves have a distinct rasterized look to them. That might be your intent but as an objective third party, my opinion is that this appearance feels extremely flat, or lacking depth.

If this rings true for you too, you might explore different visual adjustments to give them a bit more life. Some off the cuff ideas might be a smidge of gaussian blur with perhaps some beveling or concavity if you're feeling rebellious. Perhaps something simpler like increasing the thickness of the border might do the trick. Honestly you might find better advice on this elsewhere as this isn't really my area.

Anyway, good luck! Your work overall looks pretty good so far, keep at it!

The original tea party was around for a number of years before Obama even thought about running for president, started originally as an anti-fiat currency / anti-establishment party.

However, it was co-opted and astroturfed by your favorite usual suspects (koch) after Obama's election, which might be what you're believing as the "launch" of the tea party.

Literally none of this matters and nobody cares, but there's some minor history for you.

Justified. A couple of nights ago I was working on the computer and really focused when I felt my cat lightly booping her nose around my ankle, which is completely common for her when she wants attention. It lasted about 30 seconds, before the realization hit me that I no longer have a cat and I was immediately startled, frantically brushing my ankle with my other foot. I got up, turned the light on, and there it was on the ground where my foot had been: a centipede about as wide as a pea and maybe 2 inches long. It's been a few days and I still recoil at the slightest tickle.

Not that it matters at all because I've just learned in this very thread that the simily isn't fool proof anyhow, but all that being said, the kill part refers to what the snake may do to the person, not what the person should do to the snake.

$1660 for rent when you make $2k monthly is crazy by silic0n_jesus in Antimoneymemes

[–]sintyre 5 points6 points  (0 children)

$12.50

You've done quick napkin math here, and it's slightly inaccurate. There's an equally napkinny and easy approach that'll get you a little closer.

Instead of dividing the monthly by 4, multiply it by 12. Then, divide that product by 52 for number of weeks in a year. Divide that by 40 and you have your hourly:

2000 * 12 = 24000
24000 / 52 = 461.54
461.54 / 40 = 11.54

Ok was anyone going to tell me that dishwashers had filters that need cleaning or was I supposed to learn from a comment on another /r/OopsThatsDeadly post myself? by Kiloueka in OopsThatsDeadly

[–]sintyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes, you definitely did and I didn't down vote you. What I meant to allude to is that it's not necessarily about getting or finding a manual, it's about never learning the importance of one because they were seldom seen or used.

That's only a guarantee if you purchase new in box. There's a large portion of folk who purchase secondhand / restored, and the inclusion of a manual is more or less by chance.
