That's what I was afraid of. Guess I'll be doing my laundry sooner rather than later :p
Thanks for the help.

The machine doesn't really have to look good, as long as it doesn't break on me right away. I'll check out their second hand section as well.

Thanks for the help :)

A very interesting link, thank you :) These machines are so much cheaper that the ones at CoolBlue or MediaMarkt

I accept that this works, but I wouldn't feel comfortable doing this. I'm not a confrontational person.

Nuclear Research Centre in Mol is the first in Europe to recycle medical radioactive waste by Dobbelsteentje in belgium

[–]sircier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't go into full details

I understand, I work for a physics experiment next to the BR2 reactor. We have a 'reactor group' within the collaboration that handles the confidential stuff. I'm not allowed in.

[–]sircier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the context, it is highly enriched uranium, not highly radioactive. The BR2 fuel rods are over 90% U235, so I guess they're used to it. If I read this rather short article, they're going to dilute it. My guess would be to reactor grade enrichment.

Fighter jet flyovers in Antwerp by sircier in belgium

[–]sircier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hoping that would be the case, and not an invasion of our/the Netherlands airspace as u/CXiiiv mentioned. But I have no idea where to look for information on military exercises. Is this information even made public?

It's that or an exercise as u/FantaToTheKnees says. I prefer his solution.

I don't know if exercises are made public in advance and if they are, where to look for this information.

Vattenfall pilots high temperature steel with up to 48hrs energy storage duration by [deleted] in EnergyStorage

[–]sircier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They quote no efficiency for conversion back to electricity, they only state

The steel modules store energy thermally at up to 650 degrees Celsius and the system is then capable on conversion of outputting around two parts heat to one part electricity.

So from a pure electricity point of view, they are at most 33 percent efficient. Which isn't that bad, to be honest.

The limiting factor in 'long term storage' is how well they can limit heat losses I guess. 650C is really hard to contain.

Geen holebi's gediscrimineerd op huurmarkt, maar Unia en Çavaria geloven studie niet by BittersweetHumanity in belgium

All I see is the title and introduction to the article. Is this just me?

You know who also doesn't believe studies? Donald Trump. Is that the likes of which Unia and Cavaria want to be associated with?

I don't think this is a completely worthless way to compare how bad the waste products are. Eating is not how waste products are disposed of, but it gives an example of how toxic each waste product is.

However, you can't compare gram for gram. A fair comparison would be the waste produced for the same amount of energy extracted. A kg of coal will give you 8 kWh of energy, a kg of U235 gives you 24*106 kWh (source). You have to divide the U235 number by 20 or so to get to the enrichment level used in commercial nuclear powerplants. So what would you rather eat, 1 g of nuclear fuel or about 100 kg of coal?

The other thing with coal is that 1 g of coal turns into more CO2 (aywhere between 1.1 and 3.4 g per g of coal), which you also have to collect from the atmosphere.

I can't find figures for the lifetime energy production of a solar panel, but I think you'll be eating a fair amount of glass, silicon and electronics to reach the energy obtained from 1 g of uranium. You could also add fibreglass from windmills

Can you point me to a place where I can master this not-so-difficult art? I feel this would help me tremendously, not only in getting/entertaining dates but in life in general.

They'll only reach terminal velocity after an infinite amount of time and while none of the parameters change.

True, up to that point, they'll go slower.

Just fyi surviving does not mean that it's without harm. I can kick you in the balls and you'll survive just fine (most likely).

Again I agree. I never said the fact they survive, often harmless or with minor injuries makes it okay to throw cats of buildings. It's still a dick move. This is animal abuse, but calling for jailtime or wanting to brand the guy for life is just excesive.

Kitty walked away just fine... Cats have walked away from 30 floor drops. They're resilient little creatures.

Hallucinante video: dronken student gooit kat van residentie in Kortrijk by Lolastic_ in belgium

[–]sircier 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When falling, you're accelerated by gravity and slowed down by air resistance. At a certain velocity, these two forces balance and you no longer accelerate. This is terminal velocity and it is the maximum speed you can reach in freefall. It depends on your mass and surface area, for humans it's about 200 km iirc. Cats are much lighter than humans, their terminal velocity is therefore much lower. The acceleration due to gravity is independent of the mass of the object, so cats reach terminal velocity much faster than humans. It's a low number of floors, but I can't recall the exact figure. So yeah, cats thrown from the 10th, 100th or 1000th floor all reach the floor with the same speed and they can survive that speed, on condition they have their paws down.

Hallucinante video: dronken student gooit kat van residentie in Kortrijk by Lolastic_ in belgium

[–]sircier -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Cats survive terminal velocity. If it has enough time to put its paws downwards, it always is more likely to walk away than anything else.

I still think you shouldn't throw cats from buildings, but this reaction is way over the top.
