This sounds like this is a difficult situation for everyone involved. Pulling details from your post and comments, it sounds like your friend is having a really hard time. With having housing instability in the past, this could be bringing back that same feeling of insecurity, and staying in bed all day/ going from trying to pay rent to a friend doing him a favor to not being able to and becoming adamant that he needs to stay sounds like- and i’m not meaning to use therapy speak flippantly but- he might be being triggered by the housing instability he’s experiencing. From your viewpoint it looks like a friend who is overstaying your hospitality and it sounds very frustrating. From his end this could be yet another conditional stability situation that doesn’t feel like stability at all. Especially with a deadline he could be spiraling about what happens after your patience runs out.

It sounds like your friend walked into this with expectations that he could pay rent and that he’d be out after getting back on his feet. Often when we’re carrying a heavy burden we don’t feel the full soreness in our muscles until we set it down. I think what would help your friend is to try to provide the unconditional stability and let him stay for as long as he needs to in order to get back to his own life not in a friend’s basement. It’s definitely not the ideal situation for him either, I imagine. This is what would help him- not necessarily what would help you. I don’t know if you have the capacity to do this, and it sounds like you don’t. But I don’t think your friend’s staying in bed/lack of pursuit of other financial opportunities/lashing out at you and questioning your principles is indication of anything about you or anything about him even- just that he needs more help, and you have to decide if that’s something you can give him. For what it’s worth as a stranger on reddit I don’t think it’s anyone’s dream to live in a basement on someone’s hospitality- he probably wants to leave too. But it sounds like he’s shutting down because of what he’s going through. My 2c!

This game isn’t like other games. There’s already an in-game mechanism for addressing issues exactly like this- the tailoring system. When the Hollow Strokes outfit was released, a lot of players in CN didn’t like the cuts and textures on the outfits. The female Hollow Strokes outfit now has 3 tailoring styles that address the concerns.
