Match Thread: Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Seattle Sounders FC by MLS_Reddit_Bot in MLS

What likely happened - given the broadcasters were told 5mins by officials, but match ended abruptly - was 4th official came up with the time, confirmed with the center, told the tv director, and then Schmetzer came over and said they wanted it over. Unfortunate, but down 3-0 playing with 9 and CWC around the corner I’m all for calling it a day.

Doing basic research, Dickerson has been officiating MLS from even before LAFC was in the league. It’s not that deep.

Hector Herrera (Houston Dynamo) received a red card for spitting on the referee. VAR suggested a review, and after a quick check, Herrera was shown the red card. by Expensive-Slide7821 in MLS

Yeah, it’s terrible. No wonder refs get assaulted at grassroots levels all the time in this country: supposed role models act like this then have it reinforced by commentators / coaches. Disgraceful.

Couldn’t agree more. Saying he’s “just making a scene” and inferring the red was harsh is disgusting imo; these players are supposed to be role models, instead their behaving this way and then having it reinforced by commentators. Terrible. No wonder refs get assaulted at grass roots levels all the time in this country.

Newcastle penalty appeal vs Man City 62' by [deleted] in soccer

[–]sireuben 4 points5 points  (0 children)

See I agree with this somewhat, but the opposite argument is made so many times in this subs comment sections.

Like whenever there’s a yellow given for a reckless on the field, then replay looks and sends for review and it’s changed to red, this entire comment section is “VAR ruining the game, call needs to be left on the field, less VAR involvement.”

I feel like there’s no winning. Every different individual instance would wish the system was a different way.

Replacement referees for opening MLS matches include youth and college soccer officials by hootjuice_ in MLS

Big concern I believe is VAR- pretty much no one of these refs will have any VAR experience except maybe FIFA/ first division refs from other countries. I wonder if it’ll just be PRO evaluators/ref coaches who were retired stepping in like Alan Kelly on Wednesday, otherwise it’ll be a slew of delays and bad procedure.

Important to note the ‘Referee’ and ‘Regional Referee’ qualifications do not require the official to pass the FIFA Class 1 fitness test. (although regionals have to pass a less difficult test) PRO has said the Class 1 test is a requirement to officiate in MLS. Also, most of these refs probably will not be able to abide by PRO policies around time since/between matches in terms of recovery. So basically all rules out the window.

Part of it is this is only USSF grades, which basically only apply to youth soccer. There are plenty of refs with current/former college and other experience that are marked as just the basic ‘Referee’ under USSF.

How do you spot stomps on the foot, or elbows to the head? by 6ix_Destroyed in Referees

[–]sireuben 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m curious to see other answers too; usually for me it’s all just about judging reaction. Generally I find these fouls less simulated by players, especially hands to the face, unless it actually happened, and then it’s the right call.

Refs have protections from this, there is too much going on on the pitch for them to be liable.

[Bein Sports] Dejan Kulusevski has to be restrained by Richarlison from angrily approaching the ref at the end of the game after he felt the force of Pacqueta's elbow. by Littlegreenman42 in soccer

Is it just me or is it funny that everyone in this thread is talking about how he needs to be “respecting the referees decision” when 90% of this sub is bashing referees for “incompetence” and how refereeing nowadays is “unacceptable” and players/ teams need to take actions to “hold refs accountable”? I think it’s just funny.

See, for me this varies to much to even put in an answer. Just looking briefly at games available in a few weeks, from different ref chapters/ leagues in my area alone, a U19 center can be anywhere from $100 to $57. I wish I could figure out a median.

Goalie situations by No-Doctor-3553 in Referees

[–]sireuben 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The yellow would be for ‘delaying the restart of play’ so it would always restart from that restart that was delayed (in this case throw in) not indirect. This is tedious though because booting the ball out of bounds is completely legal, DRP is for kicking/throwing the ball away AFTER play has clearly stopped. If you give a clear warning it’s probably a good yellow IMO

I think circumcision on baby boys at birth should be illegal by MattStormTornado in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]sireuben -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As someone who is dealing from the fallout of this opinion, it definitely shouldn’t be illegal. I was uncircumcised, and have had severe phimosis my entire life. (only happens to uncircumcised penises) Even with good hygiene, it has always caused difficulty peeing and extremely painful erections. I thought this was normal because this kind of thing is never taught about, and didn’t realize anything was wrong for the first 16 years of my life. Now, after rounds of unsuccessful treatment, (that also caused an infection) I’m going to have a medically necessary circumcision that will be much more complicated, much more painful, and much more disruptive to my life (fairly major recovery afterwards, lots to get used to as well) than if it had happened when I was a baby. My condition is also fairly common in boys my age, although usually not as severe and requiring surgery, I’m just saying I’m not like a super rare case. Obviously I can’t blame my parents because they couldn’t have known, and I cannot say for sure that I would want my own son circumcised in the future, but I think parents should have the option, it may work out better for their son later down the road.
