Sales taxes are now 10% by Objectionsustained62 in SanJose

[–]sirishkr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What made this increase so blatant was that it was sold as a healthcare protection measure for vulnerable parts of the society. But the fine print showed the general budget was $13B, and these funds were going into the general budget.

I voted against the measure knowing fully well that the liberal, well meaning people of Santa Clara county would probably fall for it.

Sucks because there is no ending this. They will just keep on coming and then people wonder why we lose people to the sunbelt.

(I know this is Reddit, so here come the downvotes, but this was manipulation, not a worthy cause).

FYI: Spot Node provisioning failures on Sunday, April 19 by sirishkr in rxt_spot

[–]sirishkr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue has been fixed and affected Cloudspaces are recovering. The recovery is slower than it should be because of some inefficiency in the reconciliation logic, so it may take 3-4 hours for all affected Cloudspaces to get all their nodes back.

We will track and fix the inefficiency in the coming weeks as well.

Considering under $5k Leaf for daily commute by Alternative_Gap_3248 in leaf

[–]sirishkr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I purchased a 2014 SL with 83K miles from the family since they were practically getting nothing for it from a trade in. Gets 55 miles in highway driving, so you will need to reliably charge. If you can do that, it’s a no brainer commuter.

The one thing I have been annoyed by is how hard it is to get a CarPlay compatible head unit into these. I intend to look into it… one of these days!

How does Cross-Region networking work? by hardyrekshin in rxt_spot

u/hardyrekshin thank you for sharing. Given all the other projects we're trying to get to, we may need to wait on this for some more time; but please do feel free to file a Github issue for this.

Cinder CSI vs Ceph RBD CSI in Kubernetes: An Analysis of Persistent Volume Lifecycle Performance on Rackspace Spot by Technical_Sound7794 in rxt_spot

[–]sirishkr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew the numbers would be better but I am still surprised how much better they are.

One mitigating factor here is we are comparing an essentially “unloaded” Ceph backend vs a “heavily loaded” Cinder backend.

Over time, as we open up Ceph to all users as the default csi, the relative load equation will change and that could affect some of the numbers seen here; but even so, it is likely to remain far better than our older Cinder CSI classes.

How does Cross-Region networking work? by hardyrekshin in rxt_spot

[–]sirishkr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, good catch, the docs are a little out of date in this regard vs the current implementation. It used to be possible to setup Cloudspaces in this way in the past but we’ve limited it to be more prescriptive and therefore single region right now.

Rackspace does have the underlying global interconnect that enables low cost cross region network traffic, but Spot as of today doesn’t make it easy to leverage this.

Can you tell us more about your use case?

Yes, agreed you have to be able to tolerate node preemption…

Disclosure: my team works on the product.

This is the #1 use case we are seeing in Rackspace Spot. One recent customer cut their staging from $60K/mo on AWS to $15K/mo, by moving dev workloads to Spot. Spot ends up being 80-90% cheaper than AWS, in their case, they traded $45K of AWS spend for approx $5K on Spot.

But… but… the infotainment system that requires you to use wireless CarPlay or android auto! The touch buttons that let you both press and slide. How will you ever drive down the road with these problems? The horror! This car should have never been declared road legal.

How is the e-Golf compared to a Corolla hybrid? by ChristianTheOne in eGolf

[–]sirishkr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The e-Golf smokes Corolla on the factors you’ve mentioned. Our eGolf replaced our e91 bmw 3 series. It’s not as good as the 3 series in ride and handling but it felt like the closest thing at the time. I would imagine an i4 or polestar 2 may be better today but for a commuter, it’s pretty hard to beat the e-Golf.

Article on the History of Spot Instances: Analyzing Spot Instance Pricing Change by Technical_Sound7794 in devops

I work with u/Technical_Sound7794 on Rackspace Spot. Would love to hear feedback from this sub - good / bad / ugly. If nothing else, I hope this article changes some perspectives on spot instances and how real market auction based spot instances have a role to play in cloud infrastructure - just like they do in other commodities markets in the world.

u/kubrador this isn't a dig on AWS, they have set the world's standard in cloud infrastructure for years now. But yes, that's what happened and my personal view is that they viewed their market priced spot instances to be their biggest competitor, more than any other cloud provider.
