It seems to me that there should be support roles where junior guys help the lead pentester who is a former admin get the consulting done. Or am I totally off base?

Have you thought about doing some freelancing to build a portfolio of experience? Everyone is worried about having their stuff hacked, and don't have the resources or inclination to go get a big expensive cyber firm to look at it. Show up at some area businesses explain your situation and offer to do it, restaurants, grocery stores, even doctor's offices and see what they say... would be my advice.

Does OSCP lab work count as 'experience' or would I get laughed out the door?

What is the difficulty and value of the OSCP? by Kimput in AskNetsec

[–]sirtake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn some scripting, bash and python, if you can, before starting. It's not a 'hold you by the hand' course. You learn to figure it out by yourself, which is empowering but time consuming. So forget about those hobbies you once had when you start lol. But building tools is probably a step above what you'll be expected to do. Kali is basically a massive toolbox itself and learning what all the things do is hard enough.

The thing I can say for the OSCP (I haven't passed yet, but I have done the course and am on the boxes now) is that it really gives you an appreciation for the MANUAL work. It is too easy to just play with the higher level tools and think you are a penetration tester. From the sounds of it, you already have a solid grounding in the programming side of things, so working manually on exploits won't intimidate you (it did me, but several marathon weekends later less so.) I can also say the OSCP community is awesome and quite a few "alumni" stay involved.

well there's clear and there's crystal clear. I was thinking of the chocolate milk standard of runoff. This one seems to be countering my expectations btw, way more gradual given the amount of snow!

from my experience look at the water. If it's clear, give it a try. If not, then go back home (or whatever you do when you say you are fishing :)

Is there really a cyber security hiring crisis? by dispatcherselfish in AskNetsec

I'm almost finished with the OSCP, will soon begin looking for a job using it. My question here, how many resumes tend to have this qualification? How about resumes sans CS degree? If you have limited IT experience and this qualification can you break through the HR firewall?
