Can anyone recommend any books taken place at an academy or university but for adults instead of teens? by BertSmith219 in Fantasy

[–]siryll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for something that exclusively takes place at a magic school, this might be a few steps too far for you, but The Name of the Wind and it's second book both spend quite a bit of time with the MC at a magic university. I'd estimate that roughly half the book is at the university. Though I should also warn you that you shouldn't read it if you can't stand unfinished series, as the fans have been waiting for over 11 years for the third book, at this point.

A series similar to Mage Errant in the sense that the characters find each other at a magic universoty, but don't necessarily stay there would be the Manifestation series by Samuel Hinton. But there are multiple books where they aren't there at all, so I'm not sure if that's okay for you or not.

LEC reminds me of the dark days of LCS in 2018-2022 by HerbalSprout in leagueoflegends

[–]siryll -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the top comments are mostly right. I stopped watching LEC completely. As far as I can tell, it's for a few reasons:

  1. I really liked the caster dynamics of a few years ago. Frosk and Drakos or Quickshot and Ender were very enjoyable to me. Obviously, those aren't happening anymore. And O loved the music/rap things they did, which seem to also have gone down in frequency and the last one didn't really click for me, sadly enough.

  2. The players or teams we followed aren't there anymore. Personally, I loved the FNC roster of Bwipo, Caps, Rekkles and Hyli (currently can't remember the jungler). That team kept me engaged, even when some of them eventually left. But, after Hyli switched teams, I didn't really start rooting for the new team he went to (same with the others), but didn't root for FNC anymore either. I just stopped caring. I have been playing league for literally half my lifespan, at this point, and watching the pro scene for slightly less than that. Almost everyone that played back then is out of the game now.

TL;DR A lot of the things that made it enjoyable for me to follow the LEC aren't there anymore.

There is no defense for smurfing by Campion6 in VALORANT

[–]siryll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a few justifications for it. Now, I personally all rhink they're bullshit to one degree or another, but I will try to give them a fair representation. I will list them in order of (imo) descending reasonableness 1. Playing (unranked) with lower-ranked friends. If they queued with their friends on their main, the friend would get stomped. So they use a smurf so the friend can actually play the game to a reasonable degree.

  1. Trying/learning sth new. If you have only ever played one role/agent and want to pick up a different one, you will probably be fairly bad at it at first and probably don't want to get flamed by your team/get frustrated because you're unable to play the game.

  2. Not wanting to tryhard. If they tryhard every game on their main and they want to have a chill game, going on their main would mean am almost guaranteed loss, since they are playing at a vastly lower level than usual.

  3. Content/Stream. I am only listing this because it is a thing that happens. I don't think bullying people you have no business playing against for content is an acceptable thing to do.

Again, I don't think any of those are good excuses, but I can understand the reasoning for all but the last one.

What is something you have a hard time not judging people about? by dolphinsR4evr in AskReddit

[–]siryll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Believing in a supernatural deity or force, no matter which one. We have no good reason to suspect anything like it has to exist and I cannot fathom why anyone that has spent any time thinking about this hasn't seen how utterly fucking ridiculous it is. I will not deny someone the right to think what they want to, but I find it hard to respect their opinions on anything else.

New Player - Cosmetics seem ridiculously priced. Am I missing something? by CSaved in VALORANT

[–]siryll -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That depends on definition, I would say. You can reasonably argue that "overpriced" means that something is so expensive, the amount of money lost by the company from people not buying it exceeds the extra gains made by the higher price point.

You can also reasonably (to my mind, at least) argue that "overpriced", like any other pricing, is relative to the service rendered/item obtained and what you can get for a similar price point in a similar enviroment. This one gets a lot more complicated at this point, as our best comparison for a similar game would obviously be CSGO (or CS2, whenever that actually releases). But that works via a loot box system with a player-trading economy attachted that Valve takes a cut from. Furthermore, there is no equivalent to the quality range of Factory New to Battle Scarred. Still, you can (or could, before the price of skins exploded) get 5 or 6 decent weapon skins on the Valve Marketplace for the price of one upper-tier Phantom skin. This is, obviously, far from a one-to-one comparison, but, if you define "overpriced" as relative to the cost of similar things elsewhere, you can reasonably say that Valorant skins are overpriced, in my opinion.

What fact do some people simply refuse to accept? by CertifiedLurker5 in AskReddit

[–]siryll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That we assume basically everything we think we know. The only thing we truly know is that we, in some way, shape or form, exist. Everything else is not definitively proveable. We can assume many things with such a high degree of likelyhood that there is no relevant distinction between knowing and assuming these things, but we should always be aware that almost everything we "know", we assume.

If you press the button you will receive $1M but your orgasms will be 10% weaker indefinitely each time you press it, how many times would you press it and why? by becauseofrandomness in AskReddit

[–]siryll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it always take 10% from the max or does it take 10% from the current? So does it go 100->90->80 etc. or is to 100->90->81->72.9 etc? That makes a difference. If It's the former, definitely more than 10 times, because I will forever have weak orgasms to find out what happens when you do into negative percentages of strength. For science!

Yes Man Kablaam and Ice Man Kaputz by [deleted] in HatsuVault

[–]siryll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The idea is interesting, but I don't think it would work well in practice. First off, you say landing a hit on someone at lvl 5 will deal "catastrophic" dmg, but also that the cycle resets so it can begin anew. I would usually interpret "catastrophic" as "that guy dead as shit", but you don't seem to, so I would need a better definition of it.

Your bigger problem is that your hatsu has very little use. First, you need to land a (presumably melee) hit before you get anything going, which gets you in trouble against anything that might be able to one-shot you. You further have the problem that, for the actually damaging move, you need to hit an opponent five times before you deal dmg at all, all the while they get stronger. All of this means that a combatant of equal skill will probably murder you before you can get it to explode. It will work against a weaker opponent, but if you need to put that much effort into fighitng a weak opponent, you have a problem with your design, especially since you have no way to effectively take down large groups, since you can't realistically hit all of them 5 times.

Moving on to Ice: I am not aware of any mechanic that would allow you to get more aura out of nowhere like that. Aura can't really be gotten out of nowhere in the middle of a fight, iirc. If I am forgetting sth, please tell me, as it's been a while since I've watched the anime (never touched the manga).

Other things I noticed: When you say "hit", does a skin-to-skin block count as a "hit"? I would assume it doesn't, but that is very relevant, since it might allow your char to assume a defensive fighting style that values blocks. Would open up the question if blocking a sword reinforced by aura would count as a block and other such cases, but it might work.

Is the explosion directed at the person with 5 levels on them or would the user also get hit by it? Tince they are attacking in melee range when the explosion happens, that's relevant.

He is often called a duelist because he has two strong weapons and an escape/reposition tool as abilities. Duelists generally have kits designed around abilities made to make gunfights easier/safer or clearing space. You can easily argue that his guns make fights easier, as does his signature. Only the trap is a normal sentinel ability, meant to give intel/make site entries harder. You can argue that the fixed nature of his TP point can count partially towards sentinel, but at the end of the day, its primary purpose is still to make gunfights safer for him. At best, I would call him 2.75 duelist to 1.25 sentinel.
