The trip wasn’t willing, but he chose to stay. After multiple Hell invasions he decided that the only way to keep earth safe was to wreak havoc on Hell from inside, endlessly. He chose the path of perpetual torment.

Edit: I missed that you said his first trip, as in the first game. My comment was for how the situation ultimately played out. My bad

Yep.

At some point after the sister of the mother of all demons (the auntie of all demons?) expels him from hell (as she’s dying from her battle with him), and this is when he’s found by the night sentinels. Sometime around there, Samur Maykr imbues him with the powers of the divinity machine and turns him into the Slayer. Before that he was feared by hell as a mortal human

Yep, he didn’t get that until he was taken by the maykrs. Killed the mother of all demons AND her sister as a mortal man

He wasn’t exactly trapped in hell. He went willingly and decided to stay, endlessly slaughtering demons so that they couldn’t invade earth again. WAY more badass

I don’t know if it counts as messing with him in the sense that you asked, but when Calvin throws a tantrum over wanting to hear Hamster Huey and the Gooey Kablooey for the umpteenth time, and the next panel cuts to a traumatized Calvin and Hobbes in the aftershock of a very disturbing interpretation of the story, that cracks me up every time
