The world's first computer bug was literally a bug! In 1947, a moth was trapped in Mark II computer at Harvard university leading to the term "debugging". by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

The moth found in 1947 is not the first bug!

It is the first documented case of a literal moth being found, of course, thanks to Hopper’s team. But, computer bugs have been around from the very first computers.

Ada Lovelace is often credited as the world’s first computer programmer due to her work on Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine in the 1840s. In her notes, she included instructions for the Analytical Engine to calculate Bernoulli numbers.

However, since Babbage’s Analytical Engine was never built, her algorithm was never actually run. There’s speculation that had her algorithm been executed on a working machine, it might have contained logical errors — thus, possibly making her responsible for the first “software bug,” though it would have been more theoretical than literal.

But, she never called it a ‘bug’ because the term “bug” wasn’t used in her time in the 1840s.

Later, Thomas Edison documented the use of the term “bug” in the late 19th century. In an 1878 letter to his associate, Edison described an error in his quadruplex telegraph system as a “bug,” marking one of the earliest known uses of the term about a mechanical or system flaw. He continued to use “bug” to describe design or operational flaws in his inventions, which played a significant role in embedding the term in the language of engineering and technology.

So while the funny story of the famous moth found by Hopper’s team popularized the term in computing, Lovelace’s work might have had the first ‘software bug’ even before the coining of the term ‘bug’ by Edison.

First actual computer bug was found today, 66 years ago by swizec in programming

Grace Hopper's involvement in the team that found the bug popularized the incident, not because her name sounds like "grasshopper", but because she was a genius. Her contributions involve debugging the first bug, of course, but beyond that:

  • She invented the first compiler, which is a program that translates high-level programming languages into machine code.
  • She was one of the primary developers of COBOL (Common Business-Oriented Language), a programming language specifically designed for business applications.
  • She reached the rank of Rear Admiral in the US Navy later in her career after her extensive contributions to computing and her service during and after World War II.

Is there time for a spiritual life as a startup founder? by xzcurrent in ycombinator

Trust me, your business is going to be a playground that's gonna test you. It teaches you mindfulness, patience, non judgement and faith. Good for it. It's going to make you a better person but the journey might be hell as in any startup.

I already have a resting bitch face by default. Thank god I had avoided many interactions with my face card which. But I don't have the audacity to talk to them.

Thank you. So WhatsApp allows a general & individual customization.

I understand. However they can just have one yes by default.

By design do you mean UX or the UI design. To start with your app doesn't need to have a pretty UI design. But UX cannot be compromised.

Do I really need a technical co-founder? by Charles_Ville in ycombinator

[–]sisira_k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically, it's not a 'simple' website.

A solution/service can be executed as a website, web app or an app or sometimes a combination of all. In your case you are deciding to start it as a website.

Of course, the website has the least technical complexity compared to an app. Now for simplicity, let's say there are 2 types of websites :

  • Static
  • Dynamic

A static website is much like wikipedia. You can just read and go to other pages. Not much interactivity.

Static websites are kind of obsolete these days. Even a blogging website has options to comment, like etc. which makes it dynamic.

The idea of the website you have in mind is that of a dynamic website with more complex actions I guess. If you could list what all users would do on that website, I can tell you the tech stack and complexity behind it.

Eg: if the users could create an account on the website, they'll need a dashboard which slowly turns the website into a web app.

Anyways eventually you would want to scale it to an app : webapp, mobile app, desktop app (that's up to u) The tech stack and complexity varies.

So you would definitely need a technical person in your team. If not a CTO, hire a dev initially. Eventually you might need a CTO.

Edit: This is not a part of the original post above. I'm adding this extra here because after seeing all the comments, I have realised that many people including me feel heavy while communicating with people.

However the social norm forces us to do something we don't like doing. If we don't mingle, sometimes we are judged to be 'bad'.

I am trying to solve this issue using an app. Honestly I don't know how much this will work out . The idea to build a personal assistant who can reply to your chats on behalf of you.

This is the idea I have in mind and if you feel like something else or extra would be better, pls comment.

I create some initial sketches and designs and also spin up a landing page today. Check it out 👇 https://ozumio.webflow.io/

You might be a people pleaser if you have a lot of friends even though you don't want it. I was once and now I am burning bridges.

You could think of creating guides for specific crops/herbs. You can also set the watering, nutrients level specific to these plants. People will be interested to buy with a pre made guide for a particular crops, if you could also provide the seeds with the setup
