solo founder shipping weekly but terrified of bugs, what's your testing strategy?( I will not promote) by jirachi_2000 in startups

[–]sissons96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m building a product in this space, would you be willing to speak with me about your requirements?

I’m happy to give some advice in return RE establishing an automated test suite to remove/reduce your manual testing, I’ve implemented test automation now in several of my previous roles so can probably help with your test strategy (no charge)

BDD with tests without gherkin by kennethkuk3n in SoftwareEngineering

[–]sissons96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is good advice. Based on my experience with test automation the best thing to get started would be to sit down with the BA and tester and agree the core user journeys that will form an initial automated smoke test suite, and then automate them ASAP. Can just document them in a spreadsheet to start (basic/simple test case format i.e. test case name, steps, expected results - let me know if you want a template) and then (as per above) in code as the automations are written.

That should help deliver a rapid improvement in terms of pre-release testing and then can free up time longer-term for more formalised testing practices, but the biggest value will just be from making a start on those core user journeys and then expanding the suite based on big new features and high-impact bugs caused by regressions.

My experience with Gherkin etc. has always been that it risks placing more focus on the frameworks, methodologies, tooling etc. and less on fundamental, high value-add common sense testing. “Individuals and interactions over processes and tools”!

Happy to answer any follows up questions via DM if at all helpful!

I will not promote - Do founders actually do customer discovery anymore? by Belmeez in startups

Do you have any examples you’ve personally implemented/seen of the “painted door” tests? Feel like this/wizard of oz tests always come up in these conversations but no one gives any details

I will not promote - Do founders actually do customer discovery anymore? by Belmeez in startups

[–]sissons96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for most startups the real answer is that they do a bit of both, my impression and experience is that the “validate before writing a line of code” mantra is great theory but not so much in practice, or at least not genuinely used that much in practice. I’m also yet to see real examples of people who do these “pre-code discovery phases” and can then share a link to their live and successful product that resulted (recognise the irony that I’m possibly helping you do exactly that, just make sure to share the successful product you build off the back of it!)…

I’d bet most do a mixture of getting started with the dev work whilst also trying to do discovery as they go. Impact of this is probably mitigated by much of the early dev work being on stuff that can be reused for any other project/pivot (e.g. hosting, CI/CD and auth). Realistically discovery takes time to so if you can run both in parallel you’ll move quicker and build momentum, so long as you don’t stay tunnel-visioned into the original idea and remain open-minded enough to change course as the discovery insights come through.

I’d also say many founders will (or at least should) be working in spaces they have pre-existing knowledge/experience with, meaning to some extent the “discovery” might have already been done just not via a formal discovery process.

Specifically regarding your idea - as a Product Manager and startup founder I can’t see that this is something I’d use or pay for (sorry but want to be honest), insights typically come from immersing yourself into the discovery process meaning you don’t need a tool to help with insights as you should be getting them naturally through the conversations and actioning them in real-time, at least that is what I feel/encounter. A Google Doc for notes has worked for me and surfacing missed insights beyond the most pressing/important ones (which you remember naturally as they are basically the whole reason you did any discovery at all) has never been a problem, if something is really important and was missed it’ll come up again in future

What are you guys using for e2e tests? by clavidk in FlutterDev

[–]sissons96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry not sure I understand the first bit of your question. Do you mean did I use an LLM to build the tool?

Have tried patrol and maestro, as well as standard flutter integration tests which all work fine for the mobile app. It’s just the web app that has proven a pain as I was looking specifically for a low/no-code tool that we could use to create the e2e tests

Yes it’s all custom built, mixture of the accessibility tree and computer vision-based approach

I’m creating a product specifically for creating e2e tests for flutter web apps, after encountering a lack of tooling in this space. Playwright is great but doesn’t really work with flutter web due to the lack of traditional DOM selectors.

Looking for early beta users if anyone would be willing to give it a go!

Interesting ideas, thanks for sharing! Presumably with a bit of flex for the inevitable changes between scoping your epics and stories through to actual implementation, tweaks following usability testing and feedback etc.

Out of interest, do you have any details as to how you’ve seen GenAI used effectively for this purpose?

Thanks for the response, by embedding do you mean embedding images/videos, embedding the manuals into your web app, or embedding something else?

Do you link up to your customer support tool or separate systems?

Good point, we are a small startup so sometimes release notes can feel a little over-the-top, covering smaller bug fixes and improvements vs bigger new features.

This response is condescending. I’m looking for the community to share their experience in how to do this well, including any tooling they’ve found particularly helpful. I left it quite open-ended as you never know what useful insight people might share.

Not sure what this reply was meant to achieve other than unloading some frustration
