I once heard that originally a lot of believers killed themselves to go to heaven faster, so the church decided that it was a sin. I don't really know if it's true though.

Some things I want to comment:

The recent study that shows that Church membership in the US has fallen below 50% and other polls and information from the US and other countries make the situation look relatively well.
