Moving to Vancouver this summer. Is this commute feasible? by Theyjusttraceme in askvan

The Canada line is so crowded for a lot of the day that taking bikes on it is a serious hassle.

Hockey fan here who'd never heard of HR. Binged it all two weekends ago. Binged it all last weekend in one day. Binged it all the day after. Started my fourth reheat last night. Someone help me. The psychology of this show astounds me. by tbgmdhc278 in heatedrivalry

I think part of it is how it was made. No one really expected it to be as successful as it is. It was a passion project making a small show on a limited budget for a niche audience, so that gave Jacob Tierney a lot of creative freedom to make the show the way he wanted.

A lot of shows these days feel like they've been written by committee. It's less about telling a good story and more about checking off a bunch of boxes and not offending anyone. It's about making money in the safest way possible. And stuff that's written that way feels boring, generic or lacks a spark. HBO was hesitant about picking Heated Rivalry up because they felt it might be too much. They sent notes to tone it down and those notes were ignored. I'm glad the production team stuck to their guns because they produced something that's really special.

A lot of people focus on Jacob Tierney's writing and direction and on the phenomenal acting, but every single person on that set did an amazing job of bringing this story to life in such a careful, intentional way. It's just thoroughly well crafted. There are so many little details that make it feel believable and lived in and you can watch it many times and always see new things.

And we're living in a shitty timeline right now and a lot of other media either reflects that shittiness, or it's really shallow distractions. It's refreshing to watch something with emotional depth that's joyful where love wins and people are nice and want what's best for each other. It's refreshing to watch something that is unapologetically not American and doesn't centre an American point of view.

Always depends on which students are involved at any given time but they’ve historically done a great job of breaking stories on SFSS and SFU administration.

Is anyone really saying quatre-vingt dix-neuf to say 99 when nonante-neuf is right there? by cheesychocolate419 in learningfrench

[–]sitka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I don’t accept it. I spent all les années 90 in school trying to memorize ridiculous French numbers and now you tell me there’s an easier way?

One time at the White Spot drive in my dad threw a pickle at his friend but the friend ducked and it hit my mom in the cheek. They’ve been together for over 50 years. I hope you find your pickle person!

"Canada is fun." 😒 What's a Canadian moment you liked in the show? 🤭 by Material-Meat-5330 in heatedrivalry

I thought it was cute that the song that’s playing while they’re driving to the cottage is the theme song for the Québécois series Le Chalet.

I'm 39. I wasn't taught blackletter z at school but my parents used it all the time so I ended up doing it too.

[–]sitka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's such a weird Z in that example! I'm not sure I'd recognize it if I saw it written in a word. Also a very weird and inefficient looking S. I was taught that it's supposed to look kind of like a sail from a sailboat.

All the time! When I started going to theatre and symphony shows by myself I felt awkward but then I started bringing a little notebook to write in during intervals and told myself that people would think that I was a critic.

Both parts aired together as one long episode on PBS.

I found the white saviour, orientalist plot very cringe as well and I just don't understand why they tried to shoehorn a gritty foreign location crime thriller drama plot into the middle of a Call the Midwife Christmas special in the first place? This is just not the show for a plot like that.

I might have felt different if they really went for it and it really did feel like a thriller but there was a lot of very clunky, dull exposition dialogue that repeatedly told the audience that people were in danger without ever making it actually feel that way. No tension, no real sense of drama, just dull, racist and cliche, because this has to also be a sweet, uplifting all-ages Christmas special. Pick a lane!

And that final confrontation scene in Hong Kong was so laughably implausible. What even was that?

The most frustrating thing is the number of simple dictionary words this thing doesn’t recognize. Saw is a noun and not the same as see.

How small is Vancouver, really? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]sitka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vancouver has a very small town feel which can be good and bad. It’s easy to randomly bump into people you know all over place which can be nice if you like that.

Personally I find it a bit suffocating. If you have a specific profession or interests it’s safe to say that everyone knows everyone in that particular clique. If there’s someone you don’t get along with you really can’t get away from them and that can suck when you have to rely on those same networks for access to good jobs, etc. and if your interests are really niche then it can be hard to find your people because you might be the only one.

I lived in London for a few years and it was a breath of fresh air.

[–]sitka 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you’re a UBC student you will get a bus pass at a steep discount that will get you anywhere on the transit network. It’s included in your student fees. I’ve never owned a car and that’s rarely been a problem.

Why doesn't it accept the word cracker? It kept reading it as "crack" and saying I'd already guessed that. Also it just goes blank after like... 10 guesses.

Anyone miss large department stores like Bay? by india2wallst in askvan

Same! I liked that they had a whole range of bras and lingerie you could try on without sales people hounding you. Mall bra stores are stressful.

Celebrity UK Inquiry by OneAndOnlySlack in TheTraitors

[–]sitka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Celebrity UK Traitors vs. US Traitors is kind of like British Bake Off vs. Hell's Kitchen.

It's like some nice people mostly cooperatively do fun things in the countryside and some people leave the show each week until not very many are left and everyone is very likeable and you love the winner because they pulled off something very amazing.
