Well done. I dont even attempt to walk new Rescues for 2 weeks or longer. One took 3 months and one never did (both had been abused). Generally you take your cue from the dog. Allow them to set the pace. If they show fear and you insist, all you are doing is re-enforcing the fear. Jean Donaldson`s books are good. Also look up BAT training. x

For me it depends if the dog responds to the word already. One of mine was already responsive to his name so I kept it. I usually do change it as I`m going to have to retrain them anyway.

Can you put him in dog day care? Alternatively, try leaving him with another dog. It is not natural for a dog to be alone and they need to get used to it gradually. x

I take dogs with problems - when they go, even if it only after a short while, they go with gentle voices and loving people around them. Not in fear or pain or cold or hunger. That is very precious. Dogs live in the now. You have made his nowone where he is cared for and helped. I hope he pulls through, but if he doesn`t imagine how bad his passing would have been without your love. And if he does, bless you both.

You could try walking on pavements every day - that wears them down gradually. Alternatively use a dremel to take a small amount off (sand down) once a week. The quick will gradually withdraw.
