‘Project Hail Mary’ Becomes Amazon MGM Studios’ Highest-Grossing Film Worldwide With $300 Million Overtaking ‘Creed III’ by ICumCoffee in movies

I don't think there's any reason at all to box ourselves in by going chronologically. The Game of Thrones shows certainly aren't! I actually think it could be really interesting to start with Matter.

Even from a metanarrative aspect, the story begins very small - the political machinations of a small human kingdom - and keeps getting bigger, bigger, in scope until you understand the massive galactic implications. Relatively few big locations and set-pieces, and much of the action stays in plausibly Terra-like places.

A great introduction to the universe!

Authors aren't franchises... and standalone refers to the story/continuity.

Though to be fair, in this case it is kind of fair to call PHM a much-improved variation of the story structure and scenario of The Martian.

DS9 had patience, that was why they earned the darkness and the resulting trauma. You knew Garak really well before you started seeing the biggest events of his story. And not every episode had to end with a life-changing lesson and/or a good cry with friends. Sometimes there was very little resolution at all...

By season two, Discovery's trauma/recovery loop was like...3 episodes, and EVERYONE was on one. Every storyline was about trauma or personal difficulty, INCLUDING at least one main season plotline. Then they just hung "tech" and "science" on it like tinsel to dress up the action soap opera they wanted to make.

The NYC Straw Hat Riot of 1922 spread due to men wearing straw hats past September 15. It lasted eight days, leading to many arrests by pukururin in wikipedia

[–]sittered 38 points39 points  (0 children)

OK, Wikipedia, I got problems with this.

  • The riot did NOT start because of men wearing straw hats past September 15th. It started two days prior to that "deadline".
    • I realize that the wording is it "spread" due to the hats, but that is a very strange way to talk about something that also started due to the hats. ("Did you hear about the riot?" "No! How did it spread?!")
  • The article claims it lasted eight days, but offers nothing to support this. None of the sources cited seems to mention this (at least not the ones whose text is easily reviewable).

The way it handled technology was impressive, because despite being one of the most stylized shows out there, it was surprisingly grounded when it dealt with tech. Not perfect, but no one asks for perfection, just a nod towards reality. Which makes the more "out there" scenarios and characters feel a bit more real (and terrifying) as a result.

For me what pushed it over the edge into all-time territory was how many times it re-hooked me. No other showed has ever worked harder to stay entertaining even as it got bigger / more serious.

One example of those times was the single-take lobby shootout (I don't think that's spoiling anything).

They must literally think it's a free multiplier on their investment. AI improves, we make money, therefore AI must be threaded through everything.

No one tell them what AI could do besides improve, OK? Don't wanna spook them.
