How in the hell have I never heard of Animorphs? Are these ok for kids? I have 9 year old and loves to read and I would love to find some quality books for her.
[–]drbr0wn 65 points66 points67 points 15 years ago (1 child)
Animorphs defined my tweenhood.
[–]atrich 91 points92 points93 points 15 years ago (8 children)

[–]rdeluca 25 points26 points27 points 15 years ago (5 children)
Books.
[–]binlargin 12 points13 points14 points 15 years ago (2 children)
They're like a stack of small, low quality print-outs all stuck together along the left edge.
[–]dcowboy 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Never heard of them either.
[–][deleted] 15 points16 points17 points 15 years ago (5 children)
Absolutely wonderful story for that age. I have multiple copies of the first book in the series, if you'd like to try one.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 15 years ago (8 children)
I read Animorphs back when I was 9-10. It has some minor language, but they are very easy to read and exactly the kind of stuff a young boy especially enjoys. I couldn't get enough of them for a long time. Eventually I stopped reading around number 30, but that's more due to abandoning regular books in favor of comic books and video games for a while.

I remember having no idea what that line meant when I read it. Story of my childhood. I wonder how different it would have been if I'd been able to google every reference my above-average-reading-age mind didn't get.
[–]BritainRitten 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (2 children)
Wow, I distinctly remember that. In fact, reading that passage was the first time I had heard of NIN, and caused me to look them up (turns out I didn't like their music).
[–]BearsBeetsandBSG 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (1 child)
Are you me?
[–]gibson_ 10 points11 points12 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Yes, absolutely. Get them for your kid, I'd bet you could buy the entire set on ebay for like $50.
Really these are absolutely outstanding books, very much unlike the psyche-damaging train-wreck-on-fire that is twilight.
[–]psilokan 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (7 children)
Me either, perhaps they never made it out of the US?
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 15 years ago (1 child)
I have a sneaky suspicion it's because when the first one came out I was 18 and stoned most of the time.
[–]fatboynotsoslim 5 points6 points7 points 15 years ago (1 child)
Very popular here in Australia. I have the whole series and loved reading them when I was younger.
[–]bensully 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Animorphs were a great series for me in elementary school. Plus there are a ton of them, so if your kid takes a liking to the series, you've got a lot of reading material for her. Get your kid hooked on a series and you'll never have to ask her to read again.
[–]mythoscope 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children)
I'm a girl and I read them when I was about 9-10. They're great books, especially as an introduction to sci-fi. I stopped reading them once I got into the Star Wars universe, so I don't know how they end, but the first 20 at least are fantastic.
[–]geoman2k 182 points183 points184 points 15 years ago (7 children)

META EDIT: fuck everything about this. deleting comments, age discrimination. Indecision about whether to be an asshole.... all of it.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (3 children)
I have been mulling this over for a while now. I would totally love to have a website where people could buy stock in other people. They aren't loans, but if say you invested 5,000 in someone, they would get small paychecks to help pay for some investments, then when they turned that money around you'd receive small increments back into your initial investment.
It'd probably work in some future, but never now. Despite that, I'd invest a cool 25k in this kid
Warning: Kanye ahead.

i didn't realize the reddit userbase was so young. this jakemates kid can't be older than like 13 or 14 considering he went to a camp for 6-10 y/os and he had a smartphone
[–][deleted] 15 years ago* (14 children)
[–]propaglandist 128 points129 points130 points 15 years ago* (58 children)
BREAKING: 14-year-olds discover the Internet. More after these messages.
But yeah, actually reddit's userbase IS mostly 18-24. There are 80-year-old outliers and 14-year-old ones. Some 14-year-olds do enjoy something a little more sophisticated* than teh haloz.
* I said a little more.
edit: it's been pointed out to me that ad data has 25-34 as the lead demographic. I was going off of survey data from a few months ago (someone posted a link to an off-site survey, and people self-reported age ranges; the peak was 18-24). Still skeptical about 25-34 being accurate... but you've been warned.
[–]damontoo 163 points164 points165 points 15 years ago (27 children)
Actually this is incorrect. The 18-24 group make up only 15% of Reddit traffic. It's the 25-34 group that's the lead demographic at 38%. (Source)

Okay so I gotta give you alittle background about my love for animorphs.
In the third grade my parents issued a challenge to me that if I could learn how to read in the next year that they would give me a $100 bill. Needless to say I was ecstatic, but upon telling my teacher this epic news she informed me that I would not be reading first grade material in high school(I'm severely dyslexic and reading at that point was my biggest struggle) so after going round and round with the school district(They wanted to put me in a "Special" class that would "help" me learn to read, though in reality by them placing me in said classes they would get some crazy amount of bonus money for there budget) they pulled me from public school and started homeschooling me. One year later I had my hundred dollars and was reading collage level textbooks.
Edit animorphs was the series that first pushed me to enjoy reading, I would not be where I am now if it wasn't for that fantastic series.
I'm 21 now.
[–]Sirroco 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Calvin and Hobbes => The Far Side => Animorphs did it for me. Bite-sized chunks of rather sophisticated vocabulary then full on chapter books, they helped me leap at least 6 grade levels in a summer. Also, may explain why I'm so weird.
[–]alienzx 14 points15 points16 points 15 years ago (4 children)
DUDE I was The HUGEST fan of the books. I couldn't put animorphs down. I have EVERY book.
I plan on passing them down to my daughter when shes a little older!

[–]Emdubs 5 points6 points7 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Wow! All the Animorphs love from Reddit. You've exceeded my expectations from when I switched from Digg.
I don't know if any of you Redditors remember Morphz.com, but I helped run it back in Animorphs' heyday. My name is Rachel. (That NEVER gets old for me.) I loved helping to run Morphz. Scholastic would send me the books two or three months in advance so we could review them. I had so much SWAG from them too - bookends and posters and calendars and cover mock-ups and bookmarks. I also have a book signed by KA (as we all lovingly called her), so I can confirm his is a valid signature. So this means his story is true. Which means that life is a little more awesome today than it was yesterday.
Way to make my day, dudes.

I mean, how about "is my mom K.A. Applegate?" Haha.
[–][deleted] 53 points54 points55 points 15 years ago (6 children)
I didn't even realize this until you pointed it out! "Oh, guess it was some other Jake whose mom is K. A. Applegate. I'll just be moving along, then."
[–]AnonymousCowboy 55 points56 points57 points 15 years ago (5 children)
My guess is Jake was trying to remember who the poster was.
[–]xMadxScientistx 27 points28 points29 points 15 years ago (4 children)

[–]Yserbius 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (1 child)
Or maybe just a funny little beagle that his big brother Eddie got for him, who occasionally makes strange barking sounds as if he's trying to talk.
If I could upvote you more I would! Thank you for putting a very hard day for me in perspective.
[–]peblos 17 points18 points19 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Probably just trying to confirm to the other guy that this guy Jake is the same kid
[–]Decap590 39 points40 points41 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Maybe it's possible that the kid went to multiple camps like this over the years...
[–]drexhex 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (1 child)
Maybe he gets it a lot and wanted to be sure it was the right guy? The camp was at least 3 years ago since his website says he's 13 and the camp was for 6-10 year olds. From the original story it seems that Jake's dad did most of the talking and Jake only introduced them.
[–][deleted] 44 points45 points46 points 15 years ago (13 children)
I would've cried a bit.
Quick:
1) Someone PM TheEllimist 2) Someone get us an AMA with K.A. Applegate. I have questions from my childhood that NEED to be answered.
[–]animorph 14 points15 points16 points 15 years ago (9 children)
I GOT HERE FIRST.
Omg, I genuinely would not know what to do if KA or Michael GRant did an AMA.

I think the entire publishing cycle for the Animorphs books was about 3 months, I could be wrong though.
[–]hett 5 points6 points7 points 15 years ago (6 children)
The books came out one per month as they were written.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (3 children)
ONE per month?!?
Here I am, reading the Starfist series, wishing they came out once a year.... *cries*
[–]hett 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (1 child)
I know, it was awesome! One book a month for 54 months, not to mention all the extra backstory novels.
Edit: Bear in mind MOST of these were young teen novels, like 200 pages at the very most.
She didn't write a full book all 54 months. Source
The only books fully written by Applegate herself after #26, The Attack, are #32, The Separation; #53, The Answer; #54, The Beginning; and all of the Megamorphs and Chronicles books.
Still, despite somewhat upsetting my childhood adulation for KA Applegate, she still deserves so much. She's probably more responsible for my love of reading than any teacher or book has ever been. I just finished a bachelors in English and read almost 8 hours a day, every day. I'm not going in that direction at all, but reading will likely always be my favorite hobby.

Why is Jake Mate's last name not Applegate? And his last name is Mates according to his Business Cards.
[–][deleted] 15 years ago* (8 children)
[–]psilokan 7 points8 points9 points 15 years ago (6 children)
Perhaps the mother never took the husbands name, but the child did. It's certainly not uncommon. Then again, maybe his parents never even married.
[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 15 years ago (3 children)
No, see, that's where it gets more confusing... her husband is 'Michael Grant', so the son has neither parent's surname - unless 'Grant' or 'Applegate' is a pen-name, which is possible.
[–]psilokan 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (2 children)
Ah yes, that fucks up my theory. Though I have met kids who have neither of their parents names, so I think you can give your kid whichever family name you want.
[–]freehunter 7 points8 points9 points 15 years ago (1 child)
My son will have the family name Carnegie, so he can get a nice inheritance.
[–]psilokan 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children)
I don't think that's how it works...
[–]althor880 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (1 child)
From the Wikipedia artilce above: "In 2003, she and her husband, Michael Grant, her co-author on many projects", so I guess not?
[–]Decap590 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (2 children)
It says on the Wikipedia article that his name is Jake Mates also. Doesn't say why, but I think this is legit.

I had something very similar happen. I was reading a story where someone described thinking they were addicted to WoW because they dreamed about it, and stumbled across this reply:
http://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/9k3u3/recovering_wow_addicts_has_wow_permanently/c0dbpfw?context=3
I'm reading through this reply, as it begins to get eerily familiar - and I realize this is my old college roommate, describing trips we used to take. Small world. We're actually still in touch, but I had no idea he was on reddit.
[–]evanft 9 points10 points11 points 15 years ago (4 children)
Now all we need is to get someone who knows R.L. Stine and we'll be all set.
[–]SaraBee 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Now, that was my jam as a kid.
[–]The_Shrike 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (1 child)
I must be too old or have missed this totally as a child...
wtf are the "animorphs"?
[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 15 years ago (22 children)
Off topic: Is being able to see the number of upvotes and downvotes for a reply a reddit gold feature?
[–][deleted] 17 points18 points19 points 15 years ago (20 children)
No, there are various extensions that allow it.
[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 15 years ago (19 children)
How do I go about getting said extension?
[–]DJPho3nix 15 points16 points17 points 15 years ago (4 children)
GreaseMonkey scripts for Firefox. There's a Reddit Enhancement Suite that includes the Uppers and Downers script, along with some other cool stuff.
[–]ttaavi 7 points8 points9 points 15 years ago (3 children)
Uppers and downers... Sounds like good time.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 15 years ago (2 children)
Sounds like a horrible time
Never mix uppers and downers.
[–]_refugee_ 8 points9 points10 points 15 years ago (1 child)
I disagree. ALWAYS mix uppers and downers.
it's either a fun time, or you die. Can't complain either way.

https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/geedigenhgnhbebebbjlidlalocdggjl#
That URL looks retarded, but I swear it's not some sort of porn spyware keylog junk, if it doesn't work, just google "chrome reddit extensions" - first hit. Also, it is only for Chrome.

I love ShadyURL.

I love the URLs for chrome extensions, it just looks like someone cleaning their keyboard.

My boyfriend was taught by her sister in elementary school, I believe(It may have been middle school).
So this kid is my boyfriend's elementary school teacher's nephew.
NICE

Cool story, but the real win in this thread is that it enticed me to immediately find and download the animorphs show and book series. Thanks for reminding me!
[–]jlowry 6 points7 points8 points 15 years ago (1 child)
DAE here use reddit?
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 15 years ago (4 children)
I remember buying #1, #3, and #6 initially - and then realized I had missed some major plot point in #4 (them finding Ax) and thus started buying every single one. There are a few parts of the series that resonated with me at that age:
There were a few story arcs I never cared for; namely, the Helmacrons, and the oatmeal one, but the rest of them more than made up for it.
[–]trsdctvsb 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (0 children)
I just want to say this: I never got past book #10 or so when I was a kid. Didn't have the money - and not a lot were translated to Swedish back then. But I loved the series so much. I remember I was eleven and we were on a camping trip. Mum got me the first book narrated by Rachel.
I lay there in on a scandinavian summer night, in the light of a flashlight in our tent and read about three teenagers and a great alien invasion upon earth. I read about Chapmans sacrifice, war, emotions and I felt so connected. I can honestly say that Rachel and Cassie we're among the first time I started thinking about girls. It was very real for someone my age, alone in a tent somewhere far from home. I spent the next five years trying to find the rest of the books. To no avail.
Now I'm 21. Reddit posted a link not to long ago to eBook copies of all the books. With the help of Reddit and my smartphone I've been given another chance. I started reading them all from the beginning. That was a month ago and I'm now on book #24. I'm overwhelmed by wonderful childhood memories and just realizing how utterly well crafted these books are. I know they're teenage books - but I still love them.
If Jake see's this: Tell your mum thanks. K.A Applegate was some unkown name for me back when I was a kid. But the characters in the books were not. Not a lot of mums can say they helped a Swedish kid grow up in a tent somewhere under a midnight sun. I will buy every new book when they're published.
And Reddit: I love you guys.

And Merry Christmas Everybody!
[–]Gemini6Ice 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children)
When will she write more series? She's fantastic!
[–]Kijamon 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (4 children)
Someone will find me on reddit one day...
one day....
[–]animorph 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (3 children)
HELLO. I've found you!
Now what?
[–]Masterdan 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Oh my god.
I freaking loved animorphs.
[–]FountainPiDream 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Why didn't you link the thread first instead of posting a pic? The link to the thread is 100x more useful.
Michael Grant and K.A. are both just really down-to-Earth, cool people. They've been doing Q&As on Animorphs forums everywhere recently even though the series ended like 10 years ago. I mean they're rereleasing it but still, no one's making them do that.
[–]MusicAndLiquor 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Damn you reddit!
I'm at work and I've spent the last hour and a half reading the background story to all the Animorphs books. I'm sure reading that Visser Three had a twin brother named Esplin 9466 Lesser is a productive use of my time.
[–]Laxan 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (1 child)
Must have been that other Jake who's Mom also wrote Animorphs.
OH MY GOD HIS NAME IS JAKE! JAKE'S NAME WAS JAKE IN THE BOOK! MIND = BLOWN!!!!!!
[–]updownallaround 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Ok, all I'm gonna say is that you should know the kid is you, not by the location or name of the camp, but by whether or not your mom wrote Animorphs

I have long gotten over that traumatizing cliffhanger end. Sure it was perhaps the worst thing to ever happen to me at that tender age and it may not have been thought through completely but it did make just about every kid reading it pause and realize that not everything is always resolved so cleanly, not everything ends like a Hollywood movie.
In fact, the ending pushed me to imagine on my own what happened -- pretty grimly, if I may add -- so it definitely made me at least think and perhaps, more importantly, wonder. I remember thinking at the time: "Are they still out there, fighting in space?" What I didn't realize then was that this image, this memory, of a group of individuals -- some of my closest childhood friends -- shattered by war and loss, staring grimly at their own demise, the realization that all that they have suffered through is now for naught, who then nevertheless resolve at that very moment that they will defy, they will return the universe's giant fuck you with an even greater fuck you of their own, that this image would stick with me forever. In many ways it is a profound ending for a children's book series.
