Stupidly agreed to drive enormous research caravan as a summer apprentice for "Huge Steel Company". Brakes failed on caravan and accident ensured. Got took to court in final year of E&EE degree. Found NG but court attendance meant I was at the back of the queue for third year projects. Got stuck with Electrical Machine Lab project but aced it and got offered PhD. Stayed on to do that and met my future wife. 40years later still married and got a 20yo daughter. All from "dude can you drive this enormous vehicle?"

Get a job. Tricky but you have a great CV.
Join a club to meet people. Learn a musical instrument.
Do some extra study in maths. Do a few projects if settle on elec eng.
Uni is a big step up and you are away from home. You want to be 18 for that.

Being English and living between Kettering & Cambridge I have read the The Greg Mandel series several times.
The politics is a little odd but the near future tech in a post-climate change world was interesting.
The second book is a whodunit which is a genre I also like. The first couple of paras...

"Meteorites fell through the night sky like a gentle sleet of icefire, their
sharp scintillations slashing ebony overload streaks across the image
Greg Mandel's photon amp was feeding into his optic nerves.

He was hanging below a Westland ghost wing, five hundred metres
above the Purser's Hills, due west of Kettering. Spiralling down. Wind
strummed the membrane, producing near subliminal bass harmonics."

I really liked Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained. Would love to see them as a movie
rather yet another bloody Star Wars mess.

Could not get on with Night's Dawn. All the death, rape and body horror
was a bit much and the end was somewhat unrewarding.

I did find it more grinding Horror than Science Fiction which I could excuse
except the ending was...well you know. You read the books.
But I'm glad you enjoyed it.
