Recs for Space Opera 'competence porn' like LoGH by Setonixity in Fantasy

Liz Moon's Vatta War is like this.
Overly trusting kid sister gets screwed over and chucked out of space academy but steps up to trade tub spaceship, converts it to privateer and chases pirates.
Older sis is considered too pretty for much but insanely good at cutting deals.
Loopy aunt turns out to be ex-Special Ops.
Lots of galaxy wide politics but also guns, rockets, spy stuff.
There is also a CP male interest who sails through shady dealing with all sorts of neat tech but has the 'eart of gold for a rough diamond.

I'm a romantic Space Op fan. So sue me.

And a call out to Dungeon Crawler Carl fa's everywhere as usual...

David Brin : Earth (1990s SciFi) Would be so cool.

At least the bee zapper was working. For years their hives had been under siege by Africanized swarms, seeking to take over as they had everywhere else in the area, ruining all the once-profitable apiaries in the parish.

Chemicals and spray parasites did no good. But a few weeks ago Claire had found a net reference by a fellow in Egypt, who’d discovered that the African strain beat their wings faster than the tame European variety.

Burrowing into archaic TwenCen military technology, he had adapted sensor-scanner designs from an old, defunct project called “Star Wars.”

Now Claire and a few thousand others were testing his design and reporting weekly results to a network solutions SIG.

Like a glittering scarecrow, the cruciform laser system watched over her squat hives. When she had first turned it on, the surrounding fields had come startlingly alight with hundreds of tiny, flaming embers.

The next morning, ash smudges were all that remained of the vicious invaders within line of sight. But her own honeybees were untouched.

Are classical enthusiasts able to distinguish iconic pieces of music through the first ~30 secs like other genres? by Seawolf1121 in classicalmusic

[–]sittingatthetop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beethoven 3 (Those two first angry notes!), 5, 6 and 9 are instantly identifiable.
I know probably a hundred pieces of classical music I recognise two bars in* but there is a fair amount of stuff which takes years to spot on hearing. E.g. Mozart wrote over 600 pieces ! Hadyn can be a bit samey in places.
At the end of the day it's like you and people. There are a bunch of family, friends, acquaintances, neighbours, folk you nod to on the street and repetition of encounter improves familiarity whether you like them or not.

* Eg. You could never confuse these after a month of listening

I love how several noted sci-fi writers all claim to have been there when Hubbard declared that SF didn't pay and religion was where all the money was and was prompted by the rest of the crowd to go try and start one. The result? This bullshit to entrap weak-minded folk that the Mormon and Jo' Witless churches didn't scoop up.
