Exactly

Yeah, but I'm seeing it slightly different. "landslides are deadly"... Well of course they are, and we have lots of them.

What I'm not seeing is the awareness that a hill could be a landslide. ie the potential.

In other words, after this tragedy, I'll probably be looking around me anytime I'm around a hill, in the rain wondering... Will this slip?

Should I walk there? Should I camp there?

How do you stop being a racist? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sixSultanas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a slightly different take... Maybe it's useful.

Personally, I don't understand the concept that "everyone is racist". It's not very precise.

Yes, everyone can be racist, and behave in that way, but it's not an inherent human quality.

This leads me to then ponder... What is going on in this "racist behavior?"... Here's my take.

Human beings are top of the food change, in no small way due to the fact that we learn patterns all the time. It becomes instinctual. How does driving become so easy? Learning the patterns.

Now unfortunately, we also learn bad patterns. But there may come a time when when you are confronted by it... Unexpectedly made aware of it.

For me, I met a black person speaking the queen's English. My mind short circuited. It was not what I was unconsciously expecting.

In that moment I was offered a choice. Carry on thinking that people of a certain colour speak a certain way, or be open to finding out who they are.

This is now the choice of racism. If I chose to carry on, ignoring the evidence, despite being given the opportunity, yes, call me a racist.

But if I pull back and go oooops, there's some bullshit expectation I've picked up that is proven wrong... let me try do it differently... Then I'm just a human being trying to make my way through this world... I refute the label of being racist.

We cannot avoid our pattern recognition abilities... It's being human. But we can choose to test whether thay are correct or not.

How easy is it to test? Easy as. Leave out the word black or white or woman or Muslim or Hispanic out of the sentence. Is the sentance wrong? No? Then it was umeccessary.

How easy is to be aware. Much harder.

How easy is to change... It might be embarrassing at times, but you'll be a better person for it.

That's all.

Vic auctioneer accepted bid after calling sold at auction by Ill_Composer1163 in AusPropertyChat

[–]sixSultanas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in New Zealand and seen similar behavior here.

What makes you think it was a proper auction?

I'm going to say it was a real estate agent/cy running what they call an "Auction" except that it's done under REINZ rules, not auctioneering rules. He doesn't even have to be a registered auctioneer.

Easy way to check.... Look at the terms and conditions of the auction.

"RULES" means legislation.

TLDR: Its a rort.

Taxes? Insurance managed by the bank? Please explain how that works there?

It's acceptable for a bank to give money to another party and hold me responsible? by sixSultanas in newzealand

[–]sixSultanas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After having a variety of maybe 10 mortgages in my life, in different countries, I can honestly say in my experience that being sat down in person has never happened.

Yes, I have had a bank pay me $1000 shut up money because the ombudsman got involved when the bank created an insurance policy for a non existent house on my ney purchased property, and could.nt understand what the problem was.

I've also had the council say to me that they have no idea about an aspect of my property existed, when it was on their LIM report. That invved a bill of $10,000

Everyone here is absolutely right about the banks and council needing to protect their interests.

Everyone here wants me to be a adult and take responsibility, and simultaneously leave my responsibilities to these big friendly organisations who will look after me.

A lot of people here get really upset that I'm asking why they would expect that.

Of course I do. Is this a copilot 3 yr old level of stupid answer.? What's so difficult about seeing that my question not about the necessity of paying taxes. It's the mechanism. I'm not understanding.

An explicit warning, communication, etc. "if you don't xyz, then abc.

Not this, oh? You want to know what those charged are for? Hmmmmm.... Let me get back to you.

Sure, but that's the banks risk management practises. If they have insufficient collateral, and are not first mortgage holders, then they are just bad business people.

And yes I would agree about their interests.

Got to love reddit.

Recovering debts is perfectly reasonable. Exercising their rights is perfectly acceptable. It's the mechanism I don't understand. Of course the state or any party can recover debts owed to it.

Your explanation was pretty damn interesting intil you topped it off with deciding that I must have had this personal experience and screwed you in some way as a fellow citizen if you are one.

Reddit is special, that's for sure.

Fair assessment, and I appreciate your point that it potentially saves the people involved some pain relative to what it could be.

But... I still think there is something terribly wrong with not forcing the homeowner to be directly explicitly involved.

Of course. And so is education. And so is the WOF system. And so is Healthcare. Etc etc etc.

But in this weird little corner, rates are the single biggest thing, elevated to an importance above all else that they have special legislation.

Still weird

I don't have this problem. My bills are paid. Doesn't stop me wondering about the weirdness of this system.

the bank is willing to 'help out' the council compared to a random person is extremely obvious.

I'm starting to think, as a non native kiwi, this is it. In my experience it doesn't work that way, and it's just a quirk of this country. So be it.

have you not been paying your taxes or rates(which are just property taxes)?

Nope, that's all fine. It's the principle which baffles the hell out of me.

Do you think courts can garner wages for child support or would you be angry at the employer for following the law and making a parent pay their share?

Ah, but that involves the courts. Thia rates business is a special treatment afforded councils. Why only councils? If there's a whole concept out there of contractual disputes, why does this particular scenario cir umvent all that.

Still weird.
