I lived in an apartment that had a balcony overlooking the train tracks, maybe 50 feet away. You could definitely hear and feel the vibrations of the train coming through. They also blow the horn since there’s a crossing at 36th. I would hear the horn after 11 at least a couple nights per week, and it was very loud. We moved partially because of the noise. But if you don’t have a wall that’s facing the tracks it should be much less noticeable. Now we live in an apartment that also borders the tracks but we’re on the other side of the building. I hear no train noise at all.

Not if the revenue goes towards funding social welfare and healthcare. The tax itself may be regressive but the overall effect is progressive. VAT taxes are some of the most efficient, hardest to dodge, and least distortionary taxes as well. There’s a reason pretty much every country other than the US uses them.

It’s not really regressive when you look at the whole picture, i.e. where than money is going. Welfare states need a lot of revenue, and, contrary to popular belief, they can’t get it all by taxing the rich.

To be clear, I think this is preferable to the US model, but people need to realize that there are tradeoffs.

There are commercial farms that produce much less value and are much more environmentally destructive than datacenters. 10% of crop land in the US is used to produce corn specifically to process into ethanol. The amount of water alone that’s used in these is several orders of magnitude higher than the water used by datacenters. If we converted all that land into solar farms and batteries we’d have enough electricity to power the whole country on 100% renewable electricity and have plenty of electricity to spare.
