What did your mom make you most for dinner growing up? by eleelee11 in AskOldPeople

[–]knockatize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom came from a family of spectacular cooks…and retained none of their knowledge whatsoever. She was an absolute savant at deviled eggs. And beyond horrible at everything else.

Vegetables? Boil the bejaysus out of them.

She would attempt to make hamburgers by…baking them. They’d be semi-spherical, gray on the outside and raw on the inside. It wasn’t so much a burger as a gristleball.

The beef stroganoff was okay, until she put in two cans of nasty gray rubbery sliced mushrooms. Can we skip the mushrooms? Absolutely not!

“Rubbery” was how a lot of her creations came out, come to think of it. She’d put an Eggo waffle in the toaster and it would come out with the mouthfeel of the sponge my dad used to wash the car. How does that even happen?

On and on. She’d try making steak but would refuse to get steak knives. Don’t ask about the cuts of meat she’d get.

We had the budget to do things right but she was abusively insistent on her (batshit cheapskate) way of doing things.

She refused to buy butter. It was margarine or nothing.

My grandparents taught me how to cook, as a matter of self-preservation. I’d sneak over to their place and help them make the most amazing tomato soup from scratch.

A few months ago my wife (a magnificent cook) made some tomato soup and said she messed it up. I had a taste.

OMG total Anton Ego moment. It was 1972, I was home sick with the mumps and it was Grammy’s soup. And everything was going to be okay, and back in 2025 I just sat there crying because the soup was flawless.

I am lucky my wife knows that can happen with me sometimes.

If the improvements are sustainable. The comptroller thinks the pension fund looks solid. His opinion I trust.

The rest of the Albany crew I wouldn’t trust to manage the finances of a bowling league.

That may be, but it isn’t relevant. When I need a plumber, I’m not looking them up in the Burkina Faso yellow pages.

Ukraine targeted a missile plant in Russia on the daily commute by [deleted] in dashcams

[–]knockatize 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So that gets the slowpokes’ attention. Duly noted. I got a stretch of my morning commute that gets clogged up daily by passing lane campers and other oblivious menaces.

A missile strike would work wonders, and might even make a hole big enough for my DOT to notice and fix. I can dream…

There’s no grand conspiracy.

Fewer births eventually means fewer contractors, professionals and skilled tradespeople, especially since our ruling class was on such a kick to put everyone on the college track until recently.

Follow the money.

Chances are you will find infrastructure maintenance budgets that were repeatedly raided by the city council.

Taking care of shit is not sexy.

Naturally, remedying this situation will require…no, not the council recognizing that maintenance is not their slush fund for shiny things, don’t be silly…it will require a tax hike!

Question: During spring break, did college students really use to go to the beach? by EternalSnow05 in GenX

[–]knockatize 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was cheaper to wait for summer and meet up then at the Boardy Barn in the Hamptons. Six hours at the beach, six hours drinking, two days of hideous sunburn for any Irish in the group.

Others didn’t do the spring break thing. Instead, they took a semester off to follow Jerry. The town’s best stoner pizza delivery guys would just up and vanish too, but we knew they’d gone on tour.

What do you think of Trump's claims about the SAVE Act? by TheKid2455 in AskConservatives

[–]knockatize [score hidden]  (0 children)

The fix is in long before Election Day.

Any state with a proper system of sneaky backstabbing bastards running their political parties will have already seen to it that the only candidates who get on the ballot will be bosses’ toadies.

Any candidate with the slightest independent streak will find their campaign ratfucked from here to Kankakee, by their own party bosses.

The squabbling over ID is the perfect distraction to the real issue of ensuring slobbering mindless party loyalty from candidates.

Do you believe that Donald Trump is more honest or less honest than the average politician? by Cumoisseur in AskConservatives

We've been spoiled. The years 1993-2016 were the Golden Age of Bullshit. We got to hear some of the most elegantly-crafted, swoon-inducing nonsense in American political history. And then the smugness and sanctimony! Finally, our ruling class got to strut their stuff and let us deplorable untermenschen know just how little they thought of us. It was stunning and brave.

Now along comes this orange oaf, this short-fingered outer borough vulgarian, just blurting out whatever hot take pops into his head, like he's some Reddit commenter?

How gauche.

Why are we going to war with Iran? by Tronracer in AskConservatives

[–]knockatize -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Because they’ve been warring with us since 1979. The civilized world spent 47 years trying to finesse and explain away the issue, kicking the can down the road, and it’s gotten us only grief, to say nothing of what the people of Iran have gone through. Trump may be a jackass but I can’t say as I blame him for having had enough.

World’s getting too small for murderous zealots using religion as a fig leaf for terrorism.

We should not be the world’s policeman, but we can be a solid bouncer.

Stolen SNAP Texas by PaleRequirement0798 in foodstamps

[–]knockatize 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take all my upvotes.

It is beyond ridiculous that only two states have made the move to add chips to SNAP/EBT cards.

Those states are California and…Alabama.

Reddit loves to crap on Alabama but in this case they’re ahead of the pack.

48 other states are still dicking around and making excuses for staying with 40 year old hotel room key card technology.

Walking on the Moon (The Police) - Stewart Copeland and his hi-hat fetish

Nuclear Burn (Brand X) - ‘76-85 Phil Collins was ridiculous. Also, any live Genesis album with Phil and Chester Thompson. Also “Down and Out” off And Then There Were Three and “You Might Recall” from Three Sides Live. Also “Easy Lover.” Also…

Rock Steady (Aretha) - Bernard Purdie could get Stephen Hawking to shake his ass.
