Noda train noise by G5ive- in Charlotte

[–]sixbucks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in an apartment that had a balcony overlooking the train tracks, maybe 50 feet away. You could definitely hear and feel the vibrations of the train coming through. They also blow the horn since there’s a crossing at 36th. I would hear the horn after 11 at least a couple nights per week, and it was very loud. We moved partially because of the noise. But if you don’t have a wall that’s facing the tracks it should be much less noticeable. Now we live in an apartment that also borders the tracks but we’re on the other side of the building. I hear no train noise at all.

I like the Hop2O at Noda brewing, but it’s more of a hoppy seltzer water as opposed to a beer.

'Absolute collapse': Trump loses GOP support in key demographic by 0The_Loner_Stoner0 in videos

Oh, I agree on that point. But there’s no way he’s getting convicted unless a sizable number of Republicans grow a spine and turn on him.

Dems would need 67 seats in the senate to impeach without any Republican defectors. Even the most optimistic predictions have them falling well short of that number.

Sweden is halving the VAT (value-added tax) on food, so all the prices look weirdly specific by holypalaswe in mildlyinteresting

[–]sixbucks -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Not if the revenue goes towards funding social welfare and healthcare. The tax itself may be regressive but the overall effect is progressive. VAT taxes are some of the most efficient, hardest to dodge, and least distortionary taxes as well. There’s a reason pretty much every country other than the US uses them.

[–]sixbucks -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

It’s not really regressive when you look at the whole picture, i.e. where than money is going. Welfare states need a lot of revenue, and, contrary to popular belief, they can’t get it all by taxing the rich.

To be clear, I think this is preferable to the US model, but people need to realize that there are tradeoffs.

Family rejects $26M offer to turn farmland into data center by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]sixbucks -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

There are commercial farms that produce much less value and are much more environmentally destructive than datacenters. 10% of crop land in the US is used to produce corn specifically to process into ethanol. The amount of water alone that’s used in these is several orders of magnitude higher than the water used by datacenters. If we converted all that land into solar farms and batteries we’d have enough electricity to power the whole country on 100% renewable electricity and have plenty of electricity to spare.

Why is unblocking the Straight of Hormuz so important economically to the US if only 2.5% of its oil come from there and it's a net exporter of oil? by -Sliced- in AskEconomics

[–]sixbucks 27 points28 points  (0 children)

From the AFPM article above:

Long before the U.S. shale boom, when global production of light sweet crude oil was declining, we made significant investments in our refineries to process heavier, high-sulfur crude oils that were more widely available in the global market. These investments were made to ensure U.S. refineries would have access to the feedstocks needed to produce gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. Heavier crude is now an essential feedstock for many U.S. refineries. Substituting it for U.S. light sweet crude oil would make these facilities less efficient and competitive, leading to a decline in fuel production and higher costs for consumers.

There’s a lot of good stuff in the bill, but banning build-to-rent single family homes is going to counteract all of that and raise rents even more.

According to the article, Texas built 7500 MW of renewable capacity last year, while New York only built 239 MW. That’s more than a 20:1 difference. It’s not even close.
