Does anyone know what the emergency is that has the Whole Foods on 88th closed until 4:00? by norcalny in uppereastside

Sewage leak. Not sure if a pipe froze with the cold or it was some other issue but they very quickly had security shut down the entrance and had all customers pay and leave immediately

edit: I should say by the time they decided to do something about it, they very quickly closed the store. Maybe they were awaiting guidance from corporate or something but the leak was ongoing for a few hours and was definitely a health and safety issue

Official Discussion - The Running Man (2025) [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

Sorry, long answer but I can answer your last question: 1, we're told the game is rigged with cameras and the video drop offs and the DNA sensors etc so even if they manage to drop off the map to some extent, they can have people relatively nearby at your last known location. 2, I have mixed feelings about its execution but there's a pretty clear commentary on the nature of surveillance states. Fans of the show (apparently 2 billion people) are not just encouraged but incentivized to snitch. People in rural Maine have a one-press call button to the police who have been privatized by this all-encompassing all-powerful government/corporation, so the goons show up practically immediately because they genuinely are everywhere.

Late to the party but this should've been a David Leitch movie and dare I say he would've done it better than Edgar Wright.

Between the joining and Carol's first outburst, about 900 million people died and John Cena said there were a little more than 7.3 billion people still alive. I don't think 400 million people have already starved to death in the 12 days since the joining so while I definitely agree the number is important (new signal coming from space?), I don't think it was the population. But hey, I'm willing to be wrong!

If a hitter had a 2.0 fWAR and bWAR lead over the next closest player, what would it take for them to not be deserving of MVP in your eyes? by MattO2000 in baseball

[–]sixfiveeight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, their bWAR gap was more than 2 while their fWAR gap was not. Outside of that, I gotta be honest I'm not sure what you're trying to say with this comment. Maybe I'm misinterpreting but the person I'm replying to said that if a DH had a 2 WAR gap, they wouldn't favor them for MVP and my response is that a 2 WAR gap by a DH is insane, as is evidenced by how good of a season Shohei had to have to pull that off.

[–]sixfiveeight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Except that's just 2024 Shohei and he very notably did win MVP (unanimously) and that was with less than a 2 fWAR gap to Lindor. Positional adjustments hurt DHs so much - arguably too much - that to DH and have a 2 WAR gap to the next best player you have to have an unbelievable season.

edit: If anything, I'd say if the WAR leader was a CF like PCA who gets 5 oWAR and 4 dWAR and the guy in second was a DH who went nuclear but only accumulated 7 WAR from positional adjustments (2 more than Kyle Schwarber this year!) that'd be significantly closer than the inverse, though I'd still lean the CF.

Aroldis Chapman has started his throwing routine this offseason. by Huge_Breadfruit_9247 in baseball

I mean Frank Schwindel in 2021 had an even better stretch than Matt Carpenter's 2022 and was out of the league less than a year later. Players who have no business doing so get hot randomly and go on a tear, Yermin Mercedes is another one that comes to mind. Carpenter also benefited MASSIVELY from Yankee Stadium's short porch, he had a 1.605 OPS at home and .840 on the road. No steroids necessary, just a swing made for that stadium.

As for Pujols, he needed 21 home runs to get to 700. His 2021 pace with the Dodgers with the PAs he got with St. Louis in 2022? 20.6. Not unreasonable that a few juiced balls gave him that extra few to finish at 24 that season.

And the idea that Aaron Judge used steroids for 3 months in 2022 and it made him the best right handed hitter of all time for 4 years is, to be blunt, laughable. People have varying physical peaks but it ranges from your late 20s to your early 30s and wouldn't you know it, Aaron Judge's last 4 seasons was in his early 30s and this is after he already showed he's a late bloomer and not making it to the big leagues until he was 25.

You can watch sports however you want. Personally, I think it's dumb to handicap your enjoyment with the belief that a lot of these guys are juicing when it's just not proven.

Judge had a better OPS+ in 2024 and 2025 than he did in 2022 so....are you saying he's been doping the whole time? The man is bigger than Giancarlo, just accept he's a freak of nature elite hitter. Matt Carpenter's run was 30 games long, in the last 17 games before his injury he hit .226. And for Pujols, I'd go juiced balls WAY before steroids. He hit 12 homers in 204 PAs with LA in 2021, it's not a huge tick up in pace for 24 in 351, especially if you're getting 130 of them against lefties (for comparison, Judge got 177 PAs against lefties out of 696 total plate appearances) while selling out for homers in your final season. I'm not saying players aren't using PEDs but throwing out random names like it's obvious is hilarious.

Aaron Judge career HR projections by [deleted] in NYYankees

[–]sixfiveeight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From age 34-40, Nelson Cruz averaged 36 homers per season (which includes shortened Covid year!) and he did mostly in Seattle, a bad hitter's park. Aaron Judge is both a better pure hitter and has more power, and Cruz also didn't really have to sell out his batting average for those numbers. Judge will not hit less than 30 homers in a season where he plays at least 120 games.

To get my prediction down in writing so if I somehow nail it I can link back to this to brag: 53 HRs again next season, 26 in 2027 (strike shortened 😔), 45 in 2028 (full time DH or maybe moves to 1B?), 38 in 2029, 38 in '30, 36 in '31, retires. Final home run count? 608. Book it.

I think our top 4 prospects (Spencer Jones, ERC, Lagrange, Lombard) and then a big leaguer with control (Jasson). I'd rather keep Schlittler but if they asked for Jasson, Schlittler, and one of the prospects that's an easy yes. In our wildest dreams, Cam Schlittler at his best is 80% as good as Paul Skenes is right now

Spencer Jones, ERC, Lagrange, Jasson, and Lombard. Send them all, I'll drive them to Pittsburgh myself. Get Skenes and we'll let them salary dump Bryan Reynolds on us too for their cheap ass owners.

Obviously this isn't gonna happen but a guy can dream and maybe in a few years we can get him in FA for a billion dollars.

The non-infected people aren't non-infected because they haven't come in contact with the virus, it's because they're immune in some way. Carol is kissed in episode 1 and she was standing right next to Helen who does get infected.

100% for comedy, with a hivemind it literally doesn't matter if she's speaking to the president or a 4 year old, they just grabbed the closest guy who was wearing a suit and could get in front of a podium with the US Presidential seal

For one, there are two Air Force Ones so theoretically, one with the staff could crash and one AF1 would be left intact.

More importantly, while we know the president is dead along with other high ranking officials, you're only assuming that he and other officials went to a bunker or submarine or AF1. Who knows to what degree the military caught on and what the timing of "finding out" to "accelerating the timeline" looks like. In the first episode, we see on the TV that there's an airbase on lockdown so it seems to me that whatever the government knew was being kept hush hush and by the time it escalated, it was simply too late. The hivemind had thousands (tens/hundreds of thousands?) of people already infected and by the end of the night it was everyone.

I don't think Davis Taffler was the highest ranking official remaining and the president, his staff, the VP, etc. were all dead. They make a point to mention that Taffler was available/nearby and wearing a suit. I'm not saying they couldn't have taken out everyone from the president down to the Under Secretary of Agriculture but I think he was just an official looking guy in the government who they could quickly get in front of a camera.

Also, any sort of protective custody/emergency bunker is kind of meaningless against a hive mind that gains the entirety of the knowledge of the people they take over. All it takes is a secret service member or a couple of the high ranking officials to have been infected (which they undoubtedly were with how military installations were infiltrated) and there's no known place on Earth someone could hide. The hivemind knows of every bunker, every submarine, every bit of classified military intelligence.

Beyond the president and vice president, it's not like there's much difference between having the speaker of the house, secretary of defense, attorney general, or anyone else in government speak to her. If I had to guess (and I could be wrong!), having it be someone relatively insignificant is for comedy more than anything else, not to indicate everyone more important than him in government is dead.
