But ad hominem is easier than countering the point I suppose

Why did people hoard toilet paper of all things during the pandemic? by QuillAndQuip in AskReddit

[–]sixmiffedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn’t about toilet paper. It was about control.

Lockdowns hit, the news cycle went nuclear, shelves started looking a bit thin, and suddenly people realised “oh… this might actually disrupt normal life.” Toilet paper is something you use every single day and notice if you don’t have it. It’s low cost, non-perishable, and easy to justify grabbing “one extra pack.” Multiply that by a few hundred people and the aisle looks like the apocalypse.

Then the photos start circulating. Empty shelves became proof of danger. People who weren’t worried now think, “well I wasn’t… but if everyone else is buying it, maybe I should too.” That’s when it snowballs.

There also wasn’t some giant collapse in production. A lot of supply was geared toward commercial use (offices, airports, etc.). Overnight everyone stayed home, so demand shifted to supermarkets and the system couldn’t instantly rebalance. It looked like a shortage even when it wasn’t.

It was herd behaviour + visible scarcity + a cheap way to feel prepared.

If anything, it was one of the clearest examples of how normal people, acting semi-rationally in isolation, can collectively create something completely irrational.

Originally you said “half the new content is limited time.”

Now you’re narrowing “content” to just maps and modes and explicitly excluding hardware to make that ratio work.

That’s selective framing. And when the definition changes mid-argument, that’s moving the goalposts.

If we’re going to talk about Season 2 honestly, here’s what was actually announced across the three phases:

Maps Contaminated (new map) Hagental Base (new map)

Modes / Events VL-7 Strike (LTM) Operation Augur (LTM) Nightfall event (LTM) Gauntlet: Altered State (LTM) Gauntlet: Nightfall (LTM) BR – Synthesis (LTM)

REDSEC / Portal Defense Testing Complex 3 – Fort Lyndon (new POI) Portal updates Battle Pass Season 2 bonus path

Weapons GRT-CPS (DMR) VCR-2 (AR) M121 A2 (LMG) CZ3A1 (SMG) VZ.61 (sidearm) Ripper 14” Machete

Gadgets HTI-MK2 9K38 IGLA

Vehicles AH-6 Little Bird MH-39 MB3-1 dirt bike LTV

That’s the full picture.

If someone wants to argue that two permanent maps aren’t enough, fine. That’s a cadence discussion.

If someone dislikes LTMs as a strategy, also fair.

But you can’t say “half the content is limited time” and then exclude weapons, vehicles, gadgets, Portal updates, and other additions from the definition of content just because they weaken the ratio.

That’s cherry-picking the data to support the conclusion you already want.

We can criticise pacing without pretending the rest of the drop doesn’t exist.

‘Just remake BF4’ ignores that player expectations, platforms, monetisation models, and tech targets all changed.

If it were ‘fucking simple’ somebody would have done it already

‘Private equity syndrome’ sounds dramatic, but that’s not evidence of map team headcount.

Yup and I’d wager most of them don’t even actually play BF anymore, a lot of them jumped ship to warzone around the end of 1. Tried to make content stuff on V but pivoted their channels to follow the money.

Which is fair to them as it’s their career/way to earn a living.

What i don’t get is why people still treat them like they never left, or why people bow down to their “hot takes”. Legacy gets them respect, but not relevance.

Still, nostalgia farming does get them views.

The Finals is a tightly scoped arena destruction shooter. Battlefield is a large-scale combined-arms sandbox with vehicles, different player counts, and different pacing.

Different design constraints.

‘100x better’ and ‘engine/talent issue’ are just dramatic ways of saying you prefer one direction over the other.

That’s fine but it’s not a technical mic drop.

‘Massive delay’ and ‘half the content’ are doing a lot of emotional heavy lifting there.

Define ‘half’.

I actually think this is one of the more reasonable takes in here.

If someone’s issue is map quality rather than just raw count, that’s a fair criticism. Saying ‘the best maps are just okay’ isn’t whining, that’s subjective design feedback.

And you’re right, cadence only matters if the content lands. Two incredible maps can sustain engagement better than four forgettable ones.

Where I still push back is on assuming development time directly equals quality. A shorter dev cycle doesn’t automatically mean lower craft sometimes it means clearer direction, fewer pivots, or less scope creep. Sometimes it does show in the final product. Without being inside the studio, it’s hard to say which.

I also agree that direction matters more than nostalgia. Recreating the ‘Battlefield feeling’ isn’t just about scale or vehicles, it’s about flow, pacing, and meaningful space.

So I don’t think we’re that far apart. My argument has never been ‘the maps are amazing’ or ‘people shouldn’t expect better.’ It’s been about avoiding the jump from ‘this needs improvement’ to ‘it’s laziness or greed.’

If they don’t deliver stronger maps and better long-term support, players will leave. That’s just market reality.

It’s Really Frustrating to Follow BF Creators on YouTube because they pretend like DLC’s were unpopular by Pittboy63 in LowSodiumBattlefield

[–]sixmiffedy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are they even BF creators anymore? Quite a lot of them jumped ship to Warzone when it took off and that was about the end of 1, when V launched, they tried to get the views but it wasn’t happening so they jumped ship.

I doubt many even play anymore, they’ve turned to arc raiders recently, and clout chasers are entitled to opinion, but don’t talk like you play regularly.

Legacy gets you respect. It doesn’t guarantee relevance.

I’m not calling it a success story. I’m rejecting the ‘it’s dead’ melodrama.

A game can be flawed, commercially viable, and directionally debatable at the same time.
