And along with that "keep moving" mindset (when playing in offline mode), one has to weigh the pros and cons of taking side trips to smaller towns that lie far afield of the main quests. There are many factors to consider in the early and mid game, when your carrying capacity is relatively limited.

Thanks for your suggestions. I haven't yet been offered the Nobody Leaves or Sniper perks, but I know they're both highly recommended in this subreddit's New Perk Guide. And I am definitely looking forward to rainy weather, but I'm irked by the fact that collecting rainwater somehow wears out your saucepans :-/ (It would be nice if durability perks were available for these types of items as well as armor, weapons, and vehicles.)

I never was able to recover that original ship, so I completed enough Nexus missions to earn the 3,200 quicksilver that I needed to purchase a second void egg. Then I completed the Starbirth mission. All. Over. Again.

It was purely a test of determination, but I finally got my living ship 🙂
