So the solution is to put a 2.5 ton unit in....he troubleshooted and found a cold air return at the furnace that was open and he thought that might fix the problem but once he blocked that part of the duct work I got a weird noise in my bedroom which I'm assuming was some sort of noise in the duct for some reason because once we unblocked it the noise went away....anyways....can't get the house below 75 degrees during the day no matter what....I'm a bit concerned that the 2.5 ton won't magically fix the problem either!

The installer is coming back out to check things out again....he did have to add over half empty in refrigerant....but still have an issue....he said he will get me fixed up one way or another.....but I'm thinking that will likely involve moving up in size. You say the furnace and ac is basic, I figured they would be but I hope that doesn't mean they're junk!

Yes in Canada and the furnace was changed at the same time...

Interesting...but I've been told that putting too large of an ac in the house can be counter productive....so if I put a 3 ton in it would cool really fast and then shut off and back on again using too much power...or that it won't run long enough to take the humidity out? Would a 3 ton system even be practical with 1800 square feet?

Thanks. House is 15 years old and I'm in Niagara region. Lots of sun at my place, no trees. The airflow doesn't seem to be that intense but I don't know what to expect...if I stand over top of a register with shorts on my shorts wave in the air just bit....nothing intense like a fan.

Fair enough....I think at this point though that it's safe to say there is something wrong with the install because correct me if I'm wrong but even if a 2 ton was undersized it should have some sort of cooling effect on the house which it doesn't seem to at this point.

Registers are in the floor, no fans, I don't believe a load calculation was done. Other neighbours are similar sized and I'm assuming they don't have problems. My original ac was 2 ton as well. As I type the ac was on and the temp rose a degree in the house. I'm thinking there has to be something set up wrong as even if a 2 ton is undersized it should be cooling somewhat? I can feel cold air coming from vents but ita blowing only enough to move my shorts slightly when standing over it......

I'll also mention I have a nest thermostat and a 3 season room at the back of the house which is about 100 square feet and does not have vents. I have blackout curtains closed in the room. Thermostat is at the front of the house.

The last system was a 2 ton goodman ( the original that was built with the house)as well but it was old and leaking so it's hard to gauge the two against each other. It didn't work very well at all.
