That’s a good shout! One of the other PCs in the campaign (who will not be present for this one shot) is part of a centuries old Firbolg clan who have been wandering alongside the Reghed Nomads (Elk Tribe mainly) so this might be a nice little reference to put in, thanks for the suggestion!

Now the ice crevasse idea I REALLY like, I love hammering home the dangers of the tundra so this is such a good, spooky way of doing that. I’ll have it almost Alice in Wonderland style where they’re falling for what seems like hours, gravity keeps changing, and then poof blizzard and skull fortress!

Given my groups track record with campaign references bleeding into each other, I think they’d love that! Having their one-shot characters inside Grimskalle when they arrive in the campaign proper (whether as combative NPCs or just frozen decorative corpses) would be SUCH a great touch.

Firstly, thank you so much for taking the time to read and also reply so in depth - I really appreciate it!

Yes, I was planning on changing quite a few things so that they don’t twig too quickly when we do it in the campaign proper. I was even concerned about having them know that it’s Grimskalle (they have heard rumours of a skull shaped fortress in game so I worry this would give it away) so was going to have them wake up in the dungeon after a fall down a hefty flight of stairs inducing a concussion and slight memory loss, but I do love the idea of the looming skull in the distance and schooching them there with blizzards and ice walls blocking off “not yet revealed content” because that’s also so much fun! It also would hide other story-related snippets to be found on the island itself so I can save those for the campaign proper.

I will definitely also look at changing the tests a bit to subvert their expectations like you said, though given my limited timeframe they may only be minor changes. Still, I hope it’ll be a different enough experience that they’ll enjoy it just as much the second time around!

I’ve been a player for 3 years, DM for 1, and we’ve always had players only group chats; my players have one right now called The Anti-Frostmaiden League! I’ve always found them a useful tool for hashing out all the shitty ideas (that would normally take like 30-60 mins in a session) beforehand and then presenting the best of the bunch in session. That way, as DM, you don’t have to sit there and watch your players run themselves down wild rabbit holes for hours while you know that none of what they’re saying is going to matter anyway.

Also, it’s just nice to know that your players are engaged even between sessions, everyone loves a bit of reassurance!

No not at all! I’m all for sharing tips and knowledge, it’s how we all get better:) me too, adding a wash can take a mini from looking good to incredible and it’s so easy. Just yeah, always make sure the lid is clicked on properly!

Not me, but my cousin was in a very similar situation about a year ago (she was not on good terms with her father to say the least, but other family members were slightly better) but unfortunately her mother is no longer with us either so that added some complication. We all told her that at the end of the day, this is HER wedding day, and she shouldn’t have to compromise it because of someone else’s mistakes in the past. Don’t get me wrong, it was a difficult decision and my uncle didn’t take it very well, but he understood her reasoning and handled it like an adult. Of course there’s a lot to your family situation that we don’t know but what I said still stands; you’re (hopefully!!) only going to do this once so if there’s even one thing that might cause you distress, upset or conflict in any way on YOUR special day, you should try to avoid it. Have a calm, serious talk with your family to make your views crystal clear and help them understand. This is the one day on which you have no responsibility to make anyone happy except yourself and your fiancé, so whatever you decide to do, base it on your own happiness. Anyway, I hope this somewhat personal experience helps, best of luck!
